Noncovalent Saccharide Recognition by Means of a Tetrakis(bile acid)-Porphyrin Conjugate: Selectivity, Cooperation, and Stability
2010
Molecular recognition of Glu, Glc 2 -Glc 6 and Mal 3 by a tetrakis(bile acid)―porphyrin conjugate has been studied by using ESI-FTICR mass spectrometry. The bile acid conjugate was observed to form 1:1 noncovalent complexes with saccharides. The conjugate was found to have size-selectivity towards saccharides with three or more glucose residues. The Glc 3 and Glc 4 also formed kinetically the most stable complexes. The electron capture dissociation (ECD) experiments revealed that in complexation of an oligosaccharide three glucose residues interact with the bile acid conjugate, whereas additional glucose residues are susceptible to fragmentation. The ECD results also showed the significance…
Electronic communication through pi-conjugated wires in covalently linked porphyrin/C60 ensembles
2005
Novel photo- and electroactive triads, in which pi-conjugated p-phenylenevinylene oligomers (oPPVs) of different length are connected to a photoexcited-state electron donor (i.e., zinc tetraphenylporphyrin) and an electron acceptor (i.e., C(60)), were designed, synthesized, and tested as electron-transfer model systems. A detailed physicochemical investigation, concentrating mainly on long-range charge separation and charge recombination and kinetics, revealed small attenuation factors beta of 0.03+/-0.005 A(-1). Energy matching between the HOMO levels of C(60) and oPPVs emerged as a key parameter for supporting molecular-wire-like behavior: It favors rapid and efficient electron or hole in…
Photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous suspension by using polycrystalline TiO2 impregnated with functionalised Cu(II)-porphyrin or C…
2003
The photocatalytic activity of polycrystalline TiO2 samples impregnated with functionalized Cu(II)- or metal-free porphyrins has been investigated. A probe reaction, i.e., 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) photodegradation in aqueous suspension, has been used. The results indicated that the presence of the sensitizers is beneficial for the photoactivity and suggest an important role of Cu(II). A comparison with similar samples impregnated with modified Cu(II)- and metal-free phthalocyanines showed that the presence of porphyrin is more beneficial both for the decomposition rate of 4-nitrophenol and for the disappearance of nonpurgeable organic carbon (NPOC). Experiments were carried out by using cutoff …
Structure and reactivity of a mononuclear gold(II) complex.
2017
Mononuclear gold(II) complexes are very rare labile species. Transient gold(II) species have been suggested in homogeneous catalysis and in medical applications, but their geometric and electronic structures have remained essentially unexplored: even fundamental data, such as the ionic radius of gold(II), are unknown. Now, an unprecedentedly stable neutral gold(II) complex of a porphyrin derivative has been isolated, and its structural and spectroscopic features determined. The gold atom adopts a 2+2 coordination mode in between those of gold(III) (four-coordinate square planar) and gold(I) (two-coordinate linear), owing to a second-order Jahn–Teller distortion enabled by the relativistical…

Porphyrin-Polymer Networks, Worms, and Nanorods: pH-triggerable Hierarchical Self-assembly
2011
In this study, we present a novel, multifaceted pH-triggerable system of self-organized hierarchical nanostructures. The system consists of meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) cylindrical brushes (PVP brushes) and can yield polymer-porphyrin networks, porphyrin loaded polymer brushes and pure porphyrin nanorods. In addition, the polymer influences the pK(a) and the mutual TPPS stacking geometry. Structures were characterized by AFM, dynamic light scattering using an IR laser, UV-Vis spectroscopy and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Supramolecular composite porphyrin structures that can be switched through external triggers have potential in photo…
Water-soluble hyperbranched polyglycerol photosensitizer for enhanced photodynamic therapy
2020
Porphyrin and its derivatives as promising photosensitizers have been widely utilized in photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, the water-solubility and biocompatibility of porphyrins are the typical bottlenecks in clinical PDT processes. Herein, we successfully fabricated a new type of water-soluble, hyperbranched polyglycerol photosensitizer through one-step esterification between water-soluble hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) and fluorophenylporphyrin (FP). Compared with the linear control polymer, i.e., FP covalently connected with linear polyethylene glycol (LPEG), the hyperbranched structures bearing multiple porphyrin units generated more singlet oxygen and exhibited higher cytotoxici…
Synthesis and electrode reactions of difluorogermanium(IV) porphyrins. Molecular stereochemistry and crystal structure of difluoro-(2,3,7,8,12,13,17,…
1988
The difluorogermanium(IV) porphyrins [GeF2(P)][P = 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrinate(2–)(oep), 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinate(2–)(tpp), or 5,10,15,20-tetra-p-tolylporphyrinate(2–)(tptp)] have been prepared by reacting hydrogen fluoride with the appropriate dichloro derivative [GeCl2(P)]. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H n.m.r., i.r., and u.v.–visible spectroscopy. The electrochemical behaviour was investigated in non-aqueous media while spectroelectrochemistry and e.s.r. were used to characterize the oxidized and reduced complexes. Each complex could be reversibly oxidized or reduced by one electron. In each case these electron additions or abstractions…
