Preparation, scaling behavior of activation energy, Hall effect, and flux-flow anisotropy of (Hg0.9Re0.1)Ba2CaCu2O6+δHTS thin films

2004

Abstract We have prepared fully textured (Hg0.9Re0.1)Ba2CaCu2O6+δ (HgRe-1212) thin films by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and post-annealing. The films exhibit sharp superconducting transitions at Tc=124 K with transition width ΔTc≃2 K. Conditions for reproducible film preparation have been found. The resistive transitions have been investigated in magnetic fields up to 8 T (parallel to the c-axis) and 10 T (perpendicular to the c-axis). We have determined the activation energy of thermally activated flux-motion for both magnetic field orientations. The Hall resistivity (ρxy) of HgRe-1212 superconductor thin films has been measured in the ab-plane at 8 T. In the mixed state a power-law beha…

Investigation of the epitaxy of thin YBa2Cu3O7-delta films

1990

Abstract The degree of epitaxy of thin sputtered and laser ablated films have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Using the selection rules for Raman scattering for the different phonons in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−δ the superconducting films on SrTiO 3 and MgO are found to be epitaxially grown with the c -axis perpendicular to the substrate. On ZrO 2 the films also grow with their c -axis perpendicular to the substrate, but with randomly oriented a / b -directions in the plane of the film.

Efficient Peltier refrigeration by a pair of normal metal/ insulator/superconductor junctions

1995

We suggest and demonstrate in experiment that two normal metal /insulator/ superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions combined in series to form a symmetric SINIS structure can operate as an efficient Peltier refrigerator. Specifically, it is shown that the SINIS structure with normal-state junction resistances 1.0 and 1.1 k$\Omega$ is capable of reaching a temperature of about 100 mK starting from 300 mK. We estimate the corresponding cooling power to be 1.5 pW per total junction area of 0.8 $\mu$m$^2$ at $T= 300$ mK.

Microwave Surface Resistance and Upper-Critical-Field Anisotropy of MgB2 Superconductor

2002

The field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance are investigated in two different samples of powdered MgB2. The experimental results can be justified in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model with fluxons moving in the flux-flow regime, provided that the anisotropy of the upper critical field is taken into due account. Assuming the angular dependence of the upper critical field expected from the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory, we determine the anisotropy factor by fitting the experimental data of the field dependence of the microwave surface resistance. We show that the anisotropy factor is constant in a range of temperatures of about 3 K below Tc and it takes on di…

Time evolution of the microwave second-order response of YBaCuO powder

2003

Transient effects in the microwave second-order response of YBaCuO powder are investigated. The time evolution of the second harmonic signal has been measured for about 300 s after the sample had been exposed to variations of the DC magnetic field. We show that in different time scales the transient response has different origin. In the time scale of milliseconds the transient response of samples in the critical state is ascribable to processes of flux redistribution induced by the switching on/off of the microwave field. At longer times, the time evolution of the second harmonic signal can be ascribed to motion of fluxons induced by the variation of the DC magnetic field. In particular, di…

Time evolution of the microwave second-harmonic response of MgB2 superconductor

2003

We report on transient effects in the microwave second-order response of two ceramic MgB2 samples. The time evolution of the second-harmonic signal is investigated for about 500 s after the sample has been exposed to a variation of the dc magnetic field. We suggest that during the first seconds the response is determined by diffusive motion of fluxons, while in the time scale of minutes it is ruled by magnetic relaxation over the surface barrier.

Vortex–antivortex unbinding in oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7− films

2007

Abstract In-plane zero-magnetic-field current–voltage ( I – V ) characteristics of oxygen-deficient YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7− δ films (7 −  δ  ∼6.5, 6.55, and 6.65) were thoroughly investigated. A good agreement with the quasi two-dimensional (2D) vortex–antivortex unbinding scenario was observed, similar to the behaviour of highly anisotropic Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+ δ films. The temperature variation of the I – V exponent allows the determination of the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition temperature T KT at the superconducting Cu–O layer level, and the mean-field critical temperature T c0 . We found that both T KT and T c0 increase with increasing doping, and T c0 remains in the region of the …

Irreversibility of the threshold field for dendritic flux avalanches in superconductors

2010

Hysteretic effects are seen in the upper and lower threshold fields for the appearance of dendritic flux instabilities, first explained in Yurchenko et al. [Phys. Rev. B 76 (2007) 092504], in NbN-films. We have measured the threshold fields at increasing and decreasing applied fields at different temperatures and proposed a mechanism explaining how the hysteresis arises by analyzing the field profiles inside the sample.

History dependence of the magnetization of thin HTSC films: an explanation for distorted SQUID signals

1997

Abstract The magnetizations of thin film disk-shaped type-II superconductors in perpendicular magnetic fields are considered by aid of Mikheenko's critical state model which has been corrected by Zhu for the case of a time-varying periodic field. This paper presents the application of this scheme to an arbitrary nonperiodic time dependence H ( t ). We calculate the influence of field inhomogeneities in a magnetometer on the current density distribution of a disk-shaped type-II superconductor. The resulting SQUID pickup signals and magnetic moments are compared to measurements performed on a 200 nm thick YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 film in the irreversible regime of the phase diagram. Theory and experime…

Fluxon dynamics by microwave surface resistance measurements in MgB2

2003

Field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance, Rs(H), have been investigated in high-density ceramic MgB2. At low temperatures, several peculiarities of the Rs(H) curves cannot be justified in the framework of models reported in the literature. We suggest that they are ascribable to the unconventional vortex structure in MgB2, related to the presence of two gaps. On the contrary, the results near Tc can be accounted for by the Coffey and Clem model, with fluxons moving in the flux-flow regime, provided that the anisotropy of the upper critical field is taken into due account.
