Effects of Including Sprints in One Weekly Low-Intensity Training Session During the Transition Period of Elite Cyclists
2020
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of including 30-s sprints in one weekly low-intensity training (LIT) session during a 3-week transition period in elite cyclists. Sixteen male elite cyclists (maximal oxygen uptake, VO2max: 72 ± 5 ml·kg−1·min−1) reduced their training load by ~60% for 3 weeks from the end of competitive season and performed only LIT or included 30-s sprints (SPR) in one weekly LIT-session. Performance and physiological capacities were evaluated during a prolonged (~2.5 h) test-session, including a strength test, a submaximal blood lactate profile test, an incremental test to exhaustion to determine VO2max, 1 h continuous cycling including four maximal…
Gendered battlefields : women in conflict, household livelihoods and post-conflict resilience building in Bawku, Ghana
2016
Master thesis development management UT503 - University of Agder 2016 This thesis mainly explores the gendered role of women in conflict and the livelihood implications of ethnic conflict on selected households. The USAID sustainable livelihood framework supplemented by the concepts of agency and empowerment served as the main theoretical points of discussion for this study. Further theoretical insights were drawn from Bujones et al (2013) factor analysis of resilience, in exploring opportunities for resilience building post-conflict in the study area. Using a case study of ethnic conflict between Kusasis and Mamprusis in Bawku (Ghana), responses were analysed to shed light on the perceived…
Kurs til foreldre med barn i fosterhjem – en selvstyring av foreldre?
2011
Author's version of an article published in the journal: Norges Barnevern. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/tnb/2011/03/art06 The article presents results from a qualitative study of parents benefits in participation in course given to parents whose children are placed in foster care. The participants describe changes that had occurred in their life situations, and aspects of the course evaluated as useful. Essential findings indicate that the participants have increased self-confidence and regard their children in a new way. Foucault’s concepts of Power are applied in the analysis.
Potential for Usage of Thermoelectric Generators on Ships
2010
Published version of an article from the journal: Journal of Electronic Materials. he original publication is available at Springerlink. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11664-010-1189-1 The useful waste heat potential for a bulk carrier has been evaluated as a preliminary step towards developing a thermoelectric generator (TEG) waste heat recovery system for ships. A medium-sized bulk carrier produces 6.2 MW of waste heat, and the most promising usable sources for the TEG are shown herein to be the exhausts from the main engine and the sludge oil incinerator.
Mixed l-/l1 fault detection observer design for positive switched systems with time-varying delay via delta operator approach
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Control, Automation and Systems. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12555-013-0466-1 This paper investigates the problem of fault detection observer design for positive switched systems with time-varying delay via delta operator approach. A new fault sensitivity measure, called l-index, is proposed. The l- fault detection observer design and multi-objective l -/l1 fault detection observer design problems are addressed. Based on the average dwell time approach and the piecewise copositive type Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method in delta domain, sufficient conditions for the existence of …
Signal Spectrum-Based Machine Learning Approach for Fault Prediction and Maintenance of Electrical Machines
2022
Industrial revolution 4.0 has enabled the advent of new technological advancements, including the introduction of information technology with physical devices. The implementation of information technology in industrial applications has helped streamline industrial processes and make them more cost-efficient. This combination of information technology and physical devices gave birth to smart devices, which opened up a new research area known as the Internet of Things (IoT). This has enabled researchers to help reduce downtime and maintenance costs by applying condition monitoring on electrical machines utilizing machine learning algorithms. Although the industry is trying to move from schedu…
Image Processing and Measurement of the Bubble Properties in a Bubbling Fluidized Bed Reactor
2022
The efficiency of a fluidized bed reactor depends on the bed fluid dynamic behavior, which is significantly influenced by the bubble properties. This work investigates the bubble properties of a bubbling fluidized bed reactor using computational particle fluid dynamic (CPFD) simulations and electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) measurements. The two-dimensional images (along the reactor horizontal and vertical planes) of the fluidized bed are obtained from the CPFD simulations at different operating conditions. The CPFD model was developed in a commercial CPFD software Barracuda Virtual Reactor 20.0.1. The bubble behavior and bed fluidization behavior are characterized form the bubble pro…
Enabling a just energy transition through solidarity in research
2023
A just energy transition is as much about acknowledging and acting on the socio-material needs of marginalised classes and groups as about informing inclusive and deliberative policy-making towards more equitable energy futures. In democracies, energy social scientists hold a privileged position and special responsibility to do both, thus offering critical support to decision-makers and practitioners. We articulate the challenges and opportunities for energy social scientists to embody solidarity in their research orientation and practices. First, we articulate the need to repoliticise, redemocratise, and negotiate a multiplicity of energy transitions. This includes recognising and engaging…
Adaptive ML-based technique for renewable energy system power forecasting in hybrid PV-Wind farms power conversion systems
2022
Large scale integration of renewable energy system with classical electrical power generation system requires a precise balance to maintain and optimize the supply–demand limitations in power grids operations. For this purpose, accurate forecasting is needed from wind energy conversion systems (WECS) and solar power plants (SPPs). This daunting task has limits with long-short term and precise term forecasting due to the highly random nature of environmental conditions. This paper offers a hybrid variational decomposition model (HVDM) as a revolutionary composite deep learning-based evolutionary technique for accurate power production forecasting in microgrid farms. The objective is to obtai…
Placement analysis of combined renewable and conventional distributed energy resources within a radial distribution network
2022
<p>System islanding, relay tripping, and reverse power flow-like issues in the distribution network are all caused by randomly placed distributed energy resources. To minimize such problems, distributed energy resource (DER) optimal placement in the radial distribution network (RDN) is essential to reduce power loss and enhance the voltage profile. When placing DERs, consideration of constraints like size, location, number, type, and power factor (PF) should be considered. For optimal placement, renewable and nonrenewable DERs are considered. The effects of different types and PFs of DER placements have been tested on the IEEE 33 bus RDN to satisfy all limitations. Us…
