Temperature concepts for small, isolated systems: 1/t decay and radiative cooling

2003

We report on progress in our investigations of cluster cooling. The analysis of measurements is based on introduction of the microcanonical temperature and a statistical description of the decay of an ensemble with a broad distribution in temperature. The resulting time dependence of the decay rate is a power law close to t 1 , replaced by nearly exponential decay after a characteristic time for quenching by radiative cooling. We focus on results obtained for fullerenes, both anions and cations and recently also neutral C60.

Power-Line Communication in Medium-Voltage System: Simulation Model and Onfield Experimental Tests

2012

The aim of this paper is to develop a complete model of a power-line communication (PLC) system operating on a medium-voltage (MV) network. The core-shield configuration was chosen for signal transmission in the power cables. In order to validate the developed model experimental, the medium-voltage network of the Favignana island was used to carry out detailed testing. The transmission was performed between two transformer substations in the presence of mains voltage (i.e., 24 kV). ST7540 FSK power-line transceivers, together with capacitive coupling interfaces, were used for the transmission and the reception of the communication signal. The correlation between the experimental measurement…

A novel thermoeconomic analysis under dynamic operating conditions for space heating and cooling systems

2019

Abstract Thermoeconomic analysis allows for a deep understanding of the cost formation process within an energy system, providing insights into the possible routes for improvement. Several thermoeconomic approaches are well-established for application in systems with steady operating conditions, such as power plants, while a limited number of applications to air-conditioning systems in buildings have been proposed, due to the difficulties in dealing with very irregular load profiles and unsteady plant operating conditions. This study investigates the potential of Thermoeconomics as a support for decision making in building energy systems, proving its capability to identify trade-offs betwee…

The importance of relation-specific investments in capital structure decision: the case of the biopharmaceutical industry

2012

According to capital structure literature, bilateral relationships with external partners have a strong impact on a firm’s financing decisions because they involve relation-specific investments that would lose most of their value in case of liquidation. By adjusting their capital structure firms can reduce liquidation risks and incentive their partners to undertake such investments. In this paper we extend these arguments to strategic alliances in the context of biotechnology industry, where bilateral relationships are formed to advance the commercialization of innovation and R-S investments are a primary issue. We investigate alliances heterogeneity and analyze whether partnerships possess…

What You Should Know About Carbon Markets

2008

Since the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol, carbon trading has been in continuous expansion. In this paper, we review the origins of carbon trading in order to understand how carbon trading works in Europe and, specifically, the functioning of the European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and the workings of several spot, futures and options markets where European Union Allowances are traded. As well, the linking of the EU ETS with the other United Nations carbon markets is also studied.

Sfide e opportunità dei care leavers. Ipotesi di progettualità

2021

Improving Communication in Risk Management of Health Information Technology Systems by means of Medical Text Simplification

2019

Health Information Technology Systems (HITS) are increasingly used to improve the quality of patient care while reducing costs. These systems have been developed in response to the changing models of care to an ongoing relationship between patient and care team, supported by the use of technology due to the increased instance of chronic disease. However, the use of HITS may increase the risk to patient safety and security. While standards can be used to address and manage these risks, significant communication problems exist between experts working in different departments. These departments operate in silos often leading to communication breakdowns. For example, risk management stakeholder…

Design of an efficient digital down-converter for a SDR-based DVB-S receiver

2007

This paper presents the design of an area-power efficient digital down-converter suitable for broadband communication systems. The DVB-S standard has been used as a design example. It has been shown that by selecting a bandpass sampling to generate only one spectral image, the case in which the relationship between the digital carrier frequency and the sampling frequency is 1/4, not only gives the smallest area but the lowest power consumption.

A novel method for harmonic mitigation for single-phase five-level cascaded H-Bridge inverter

2018

The efficiency of a system is a very important parameter for high power electrical drives applications. Moreover, the efficiency of power converters plays a fundamental role. Aim of this work, is to propose a novel selective harmonic mitigation method without solving non-linear equations. Through a very simple approach, the polynomial equations which drive the control angles have been detected for a single-phase five-level cascaded H-Bridge inverter. The obtained polynomial equations can be easily implemented in a digital system to real-time operation. The paper also presents the simulation analysis and experimental validation.

Reverse electrodialysis heat-engine: Case studies of improving energy efficiency through recovery of low temperature excess heat

2018

Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) is a technology for generating electricity from the difference in salinity between two solutions. RED is usually applied to natural water streams with different salinities, like seawater vs. freshwater. In the RED Heat-to-Power project we explore the option of using artificial water solutions operating in a closed loop where the difference in salinity is regenerated in a separation step powered by heat at temperature ranges between 60 and 100°C. We call this system Reverse Electrodialysis Heat Engine (RED HE). In this paper, first we summarise the possible system configurations and the overall amount of excess heat available in Europe for powering the RED HE pr…
