Cancer is a leading cause of mortality and the annual incidence of new cancer cases is rising worldwide. Due to the frequent development of resistance and the side effects of established anti-cancer drugs, the quest for new drugs with improved therapeutic features goes on. In contrast to cytotoxic chemotherapy of the past, the concept of targeted chemotherapy attempts to increase specificity of therapy by attacking tumor-related mechanisms. A novel emerging treatment concept represents the inhibition of centrosomal clustering. In mammals, the liver is the major organ of fatty acid catabolism. This pathway is involved in both mitochondria and peroxisome. While mitochondria breaks down fatty acids with short, medium and long carbon chains, peroxisomes are involved in the catabolism of very long and branched chain fatty acids, which are degraded by three enzymes: acyl-CoA oxidase, multifunctional enzyme and thiolase enzyme. The active pathway results mainly from a tight transcriptional control of these gene-encoding enzymes. The flow of a charged-stabilized colloidal dispersion of crystalline equilibrium structure through a cylindrical capillary is investigated. The simultaneous existence of up to three differently ordered states is observed under conditions of stationary flow. The evolution of their concentric arrangement along the capillary is determined by Bragg microscopy. For sufficient low fluxes, stationary phase distributions are obtained. While the apparent viscosity is non-monotonous and non-Newtonian, the corresponding velocity profiles are found to be piecewise parabolic and are compatible to numerical calculations. The influence of a dye (Rhodamin B) dissolved in solution or adsorbed at an interface at the center of a Fabry-Perot interferometer on the transmission was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. We show that (i) spectra of extremely thin films are measurable at sub-monolayer concentration (one monolayer reduces the transmission by ≃50%), (ii) the transmission is sensitive to the location of an extremely thin film within nm range and (iii) the absorption coefficient is determined quantitatively by comparison between theory and experiment thus permitting one to estimate the local concentration. The event 'School adopts an experiment' is an event targeted at high schools and secondary schools. It is based on a tight and direct collaboration between researchers and school students and teachers. Several schools were involved in the event by 'adopting' an experiment in physics research laboratories. Groups of selected students were first trained by university researchers, then they demonstrated the experiments to other students and teachers during the event. We present a series of optical spectroscopic and infrared photometric observations of the Be/X-ray binary system X Per made over the last four years. Over this period the Hα line profile changed from emission to absorption, accompanied by a decrease in the infrared flux by over a magnitude and a flattening of the infrared spectrum. Such behaviour is consistent with the loss of the circumstellar disc or shell of material around the Be star and the reversion to a normal O/B-type star.
General Relativistic Simulations of Accretion Disks Around Tilted Kerr Black Holes

We simulate the dynamics of self-gravitating accretion disks around tilted Kerr black holes (BH) in full 3D general relativity. For this purpose we employ the EinsteinToolkit, using the thorn McLachlan for the evolution of the spacetime via the BSSN formalism of the Einstein equations and the thorn GRHydro for the evolution of the hydrodynamics, using a 3D Cartesian mesh with adaptive mesh refinement. We investigate the effects of the tilt angle between the disk angular momentum and BH spin vector on the dynamics of these systems as the disk evolves in the tilted spacetime.
