Teaching practices in early primary school : dimensions, patterns and consequences
2017
The present thesis tested the reliability and validity of the Early Childhood Classroom Observation Measure (ECCOM; Stipek & Byler, 2004, 2005), identified the profiles of teaching practices, i.e., teaching styles, and, finally, examined the predictive role of teaching styles in early primary students’ reading skills. Specifically, the thesis had four aims: first, to examine the psychometric properties of the ECCOM in Finnish and Estonian early primary school, i.e., grades 1 and 3; second, to identify the profiles of teaching practices, i.e., teaching styles, among Finnish and Estonian teachers by using a person-oriented approach; third, to compare the use of teaching styles between Finnish…
Quality of educational dialogue and association with students’ academic performance
2018
The study used a mixed-methods approach to examine the associations between the quality of educational dialogue and students' academic performance and to analyse what kinds of dialogic teaching patterns of different levels of quality can be identified in classroom lessons. A total of 158 Grade 6 lessons were video-recorded, and the quality of the educational dialogue was assessed using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System-Secondary (CLASS-S) observational instrument. Multilevel modelling indicated that the quality of educational dialogue was positively associated with students’ academic performance (grades) in language arts and physics/chemistry. Qualitative analysis was subsequently use…
Kun perusopetuksen oppilaat oireilevat psyykkisesti : opettajien kokemuksia
2017
The aim of this study was to examine and interpret teachers’ experiences of pupils with emotional and behavioural disordres in comprehensive schools in Finland. The term ‘pupils with emotional and behavioural disorders’ refers here to children who either cannot or do not want to act according to the general expectations in a school climate. Children live in several social settings that affect their development, of which the most important ones are home and the school. It is known that positive teacher-pupil interaction has an advantageous effect on student adaptation, performance and behavior. However, behavior-related problematics affect the forming of interactive relationships. Educationa…

Lisäksi asenteiden tutkiminen on tällä hetkellä suosittu tutkimusala. Tutkimusaineisto koottiin metodisella triangulaatiolla. Aluksi oppilaille teetettiin kartoittava kysely …
Finnish upper secondary school EFL teachers' satisfaction with current textbooks
2015
Oppikirjojen merkitys suomalaisessa vieraiden kielten opetuksessa on kiistaton.

Students with specific language impairment in English education : English and special education teachers' perceptions
2016
Teacher-student interaction and lower secondary school students’ situational engagement
2019
Background: Prior research has shown that engagement plays a significant role in students’ academic learning. Aims: The present study sought to expand the current understanding of students’ engagement by examining how situational engagement during a particular lesson is associated with the observed teacher–student classroom interactions (i.e., emotional support, instructional support, and classroom organization) in the same lesson. Sample: The participants were 709 Grade 7 students (47.7% girls) from 59 classrooms in 26 lower secondary schools and 51 teachers. Methods: The data consisted of 155 video‐recorded lessons (90 language arts and 65 mathematics lessons) coded using the Classroom As…
It’s Not Only What You Say, But How You Say It : Investigating the Potential of Prosodic Analysis as a Method to Study Teacher’s Talk
2018
In this study, we introduce new insights into prosodic analyses as an emerging method to study what happens in classrooms interactions. We claim that the prosodic aspects (features of speech such as intonation, volume and pace) of talk are important, but under-represented in the learning sciences. These prosodic aspects may be used to complement, intensify or even reverse the linguistic content of speech. Thus far, most research on classrooms has focused on the content (what is said) rather than on understanding the meaning of the prosodic features (how it is said) of talk. In this study, we introduce prosodic analyses as a method to study classroom discussions. Our exploratory experiment f…
