Indexing a sequence for mapping reads with a single mismatch

Mapping reads against a genome sequence is an interesting and useful problem in computational molecular biology and bioinformatics. In this paper, we focus on the problem of indexing a sequence for mapping reads with a single mismatch. We first focus on a simpler problem where the length of the pattern is given beforehand during the data structure construction. This version of the problem is interesting in its own right in the context of the next generation sequencing. In the sequel, we show how to solve the more general problem. A Robust Minimal Learning Machine based on the M-Estimator

In this paper we propose a robust Minimal Learning Machine (R-RLM) for regression problems. The proposed method uses a robust M-estimator to generate a linear mapping between input and output distances matrices of MLM. The R-MLM was tested on one synthetic and three real world datasets that were contaminated with an increasing number of outliers. The method achieved a performance comparable to the robust Extreme Learning Machine (R-RLM) and thus can be seen as a valid alternative for regression tasks on datasets with outliers. peerReviewed

Bleaching of optical activity induced by UV Laser exposure in natural silica

We report experimental data on two types of natural silica, differing for their OH content, irradiated with UV photons (4.66 eV) from a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. Irradiation induces a reduction of the absorption band at 5.12eV and of the associated emissions at 3.14eV and 4.28eV, ascribed to twofold coordinated Ge (=Ge'') centers pre-existing in our samples. The bleaching is mainly due to the post-irradiation conversion of =Ge'' into the paramagnetic H(II) center via trapping of a H atom. Comparison with literature data points out the peculiarities of silica with a low Ge concentration as regards UV induced transformations.
