Dry-Season Precipitation in Tropical West Africa and Its Relation to Forcing from the Extratropics

2008

Abstract Precipitation is a major socioeconomic factor in the Guineo-Soudanian zone of tropical West Africa with its distinct summer rainy season from May to October. Albeit rare, precipitation during the dry season can have substantial impacts on the local hydrology and human activities reaching from the rotting of harvests to improved grazing conditions. This study provides an observationally based synoptic and dynamical analysis of an abundant rainfall event during the dry season of 2003/04 that affected the countries of Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana. The results point to a forcing of the rainfalls from the extratropics in the following ways: 1) Upper-level clouds and moisture to the e…

The 1-way on-line coupled atmospheric chemistry model system MECO(n) – Part 3: Meteorological evaluation of the on-line coupled system

2012

Abstract. Three detailed meteorological case studies are conducted with the global and regional atmospheric chemistry model system ECHAM5/MESSy(→COSMO/MESSy)n, shortly named MECO(n), in order to assess the general performance of the on-line coupling of the regional model COSMO to the global model ECHAM5. The cases are characterised by intense weather systems in Central Europe: an intense cold frontal passage in March 2010, a convective frontal event in July 2007, and the high impact winter storm "Kyrill" in January 2007. Simulations are performed with the new on-line-coupled model system and compared to classical, off-line COSMO hindcast simulations driven by ECMWF analyses. Precipitation o…

Insights into the summer diurnal cycle over Eastern South Africa.

2018

Abstract Adopting a state-of-the-art numerical model system, we investigate how the diurnal variations in precipitation and local breeze systems are characterized by lower-boundary conditions related to the Drakensberg highland and warm SST associated with the Agulhas Current. A control simulation can simulate the hydrometeorological climates in the region realistically, but the terrestrial rainfall is overestimated. During daytime, the precipitation is confined to the Drakensberg highland, and there is an onshore local breeze, while during midnight to morning, the rainfall is confined to the Agulhas Current, and the breeze is offshore. These variations are captured by the numerical simulat…

Structural and surface characterization of the polycrystalline system CrxOy · TiO2 employed for photoreduction of dinitrogen and photodegradation of …

1992

The polycrystalline system CrxOy-TiO2, used as a catalyst for photoreactions, was studied by X-ray diffractometric method, visible-ultraviolet diffuse reflectance and infrared spectroscopic methods, surface area determination, and porosimetry to characterize its structural and surface features. Two series of catalysts were prepared by two different methods, namely by coprecipitation and by impregnation. The first series was tested as photocatalysts for the dinitrogen photoreduction in a gas-solid regime and for the phenol photodegradation in a liquid-solid regime. The results indicate that the interaction of chromium ions with OH groups modifies the surface properties of the supports and co…

Synthesis and Stability Region of Stoichiometric Nanocrystalline Vanadium−Iron Spinel Powders

2000

Vanadium-iron spinels with nanometric sizes have been synthesized by a soft chemistry route. This way of elaboration consists of a coprecipitation followed by thermal treatments at low temperatures. The last thermal annealing is performed under a reducing atmosphere in order to obtain the exact oxygen stoichiometry (four oxygen atoms for three metal atoms in AB 2 O 4 ). Because of the low temperatures used, very low oxygen partial pressures (between 10 -20 and 10 -30 Pa) have to be applied. For this purpose, a reducing setup has been used. It consists of H 2 /N 2 /H 2 O gas mixtures, creating a reducing atmosphere with low oxygen partial pressure. This atmosphere can be applied to a sample …

Influence of the preparative route on the properties of WOx–ZrO2 catalysts: A detailed structural, spectroscopic, and catalytic study

2007

Abstract Two series of tungstated zirconia (WZ) solid acids covering a wide range of tungsten surface densities ( δ, W at/nm2 ) were prepared by nonconventional impregnation and coprecipitation routes, leading to samples with enhanced surface area ( ∼ 70 – 120 m 2 / g ) on annealing at 973–1073 K. The materials were thoroughly characterized by N2 physisorption , XRD, Raman, XPS, H 2-TPR, and DR UV–vis spectroscopy. The catalytic behavior of the Pt-promoted WZ catalysts (1 wt% Pt) was evaluated for the hydroconversion of n-hexadecane used as model feed representative of Fischer–Tropsch waxes. Both series of catalysts displayed a pronounced maximum in the reaction rate and a minimum in the se…

Seamless downscaling of the ESA CCI soil moisture data at the daily scale with MODIS land products

2021

Abstract Spatial downscaling has recently become a crucial process in the regional application of coarse-resolution passive microwave surface soil moisture (SSM) products. Extensive gaps in auxiliary optical/thermal infrared observation data (mainly caused by cloud cover) and gaps in coarse-resolution passive microwave SSM data lead to spatiotemporal discontinuity in downscaled SSM maps, thereby limiting their applications. An improved downscaling method for the 25-km European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) SSM product was proposed to obtain daily seamless downscaled SSM series at a 1-km scale. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra daily land su…

High-Fluence Implantation of Erbium into Silicon-Germanium Alloys: Structural and Thermal Properties

2000

AbstractHigh-quality crystalline Si1-xGex (x=0.10 and 0.25) alloys were implanted with 70 keV Er+ ions at temperatures of 350°C and 550°C to a fluence of 1015 cm−2. In-situ Rutherford backscattering/channeling (RBS) analysis supplemented with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that as-implanted alloys were in form of ternary solid solutions with a peak Er concentration of 1 at.% without any trace of Er-Si or Er-Ge precipitation. In the samples implanted at 350°C Er atoms were found to be distributed randomly in the amorphous host matrix. Post-implantation annealing at different temperatures up to 600° showed that the solid phase epitaxial regrowth of the damaged layers strongly de…

Past and Current Climate Change

2008

This section describes long-term observed climatic changes in atmospheric parameters. The focus is on surface climate conditions, but changes in atmospheric circulation are discussed as they often are behind climatic variability seen on regional and local scales. For a summary introduction on mean atmospheric states and conditions in the Baltic Sea Basin see Annex 1.2 with sections on the general atmospheric circulation (A.1.2.1), surface air temperature (A.1.2.2), precipitation (A.1.2.3), clouds (A.1.2.4), and global radiation (A.1.2.5).
