Summary Background/Objective The aim of our study was to evaluate right heart contractile force in patients with diastolic dysfunction (DD) with preserved left heart ejection fraction undergoing cardiac surgery. We examined the contractile properties of skinned human fibers obtained from the right auricle in two groups (DD and controls). Methods Right atrial tissue from 64 patients, who were undergoing cardiac surgery, were collected before extracorporal circulation. Tissue was conserved and prepared as "skinned fibers". Abstract The influence of ciamexone on the activity and course of endocrine orbitopathy was investigated. Fifty-one patients with active orbitopathy classes II-VI were allocated randomly to two groups: over a period of six months, 26 patients received 300 mg/day ciamexone and 25 patients received placebo tablets. In both groups, prednisolone was administered in addition in the first four weeks. Since endothelin production is stimulated in vitro by insulin, we performed this study to evaluate in vivo the relationships between endothelin and insulin plasma levels during a glucose load. We studied 28 subjects; 17 with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) and 11 with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Ten of the subjects in this study were normotensive and 18 with mild to moderate hypertension. Age, sex and body mass index were comparable among the groups. Objective: We assessed the effects of glucose–insulin–potassium (GIK) by echocardiography in stable patients with ischemic dysfunction. Methods: Twelve male patients with stable coronary disease (SCD) and ejection fraction (EF) <45% were studied for systolic function. GIK (glucose 30%, 300 insulin units and KCl 6 g/l) was infused at 1 ml/kg per h over 20 min.
