Sympathetic activity at rest and motor brain areas: FDG-PET study.

2008

Although recent studies identified brain areas which are involved in short term activation of the sympathetic nervous system, little is known about brain mechanisms which generate the individual variability of basal autonomic activity. In this fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography study (FDG-PET), we aimed to identify brain regions, which covary with function parameters of the autonomic nervous system at rest. Therefore, FDG-PET (Siemens, Germany) was performed twice in 14 healthy resting subjects (7 m, 7 f; mean age 29.5 years) while different parameters of autonomic function were assessed simultaneously: Blood pressure, heart rate, power spectra of heart rate variability (HF/LF …

A multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of the β3-adrenoceptor agonist solabegron for overactive bladder

2012

Abstract Background β-Adrenoceptor agonists are effective in animal models of bladder dysfunction, and the human bladder primarily expresses the β3 receptor subtype. Objective To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of the highly selective and potent β3-adrenoceptor agonist solabegron in a clinical proof-of-concept study in incontinent women with overactive bladder (OAB). Design, setting, and participants This was a randomized, double-blind trial in adult women with OAB (one or more 24-h incontinence episodes and eight or more average 24-h micturitions). Interventions Solabegron 50mg ( n =88), solabegron 125mg ( n =85), or placebo ( n =85)—all twice daily—were administered. Outcome measur…

Modulation of oestrogen excretion profiles by adjuvant chemotherapy in pre- and postmenopausal breast cancer.

1985

Modulation of steroid status by conventional chemotherapy was studied in 31 breast cancer patients receiving CMF and in 31 age-matched breast cancer patients without any therapy, taken as controls. This was achieved through the study of oestrogen excretion profiles using previously identified parameters and referring not only to classical but also to the “other”, namely catechol and unusual, oestrogen metabolites. After CMF treatment the premenopausal patients exhibit a modified excretion pattern, mainly concerning a marked and significant reduction of classical oestrogens, as shown by pattern indices. Because there is evidence that oestriol metabolism is not markedly affected by CMF treatm…

Learning Curve and Fatigue Effect of Flicker Defined Form Perimetry

2011

To evaluate the learning curve and fatigue effect of flicker defined form (FDF) perimetry.Prospective cross-sectional study. One hundred forty-one eyes of 75 healthy subjects were included in the study. Every subject was measured 3 times on 3 different days within 3 months. Differences among the tests were analyzed for mean sensitivity (MS), mean deviation (MD), pattern standard deviation (PSD), reliability indices, test duration, and test points5% and0.5% in 75 right eyes on the basis of linear mixed models for repeated measurements. To assess the effect of fatigue, differences of MS, MD, and PSD values between 66 left and right eyes were evaluated regarding alterations between these 3 exam…

Microalbuminuria fractional clearance and early renal permselectivity changes in essential hypertension.

1992

In order to verify if, in essential hypertension (EH), the microalbuminuria (AER) increase could be due to hemodynamic modifications or to glomerular structural changes, in 15 essential hypertensives (EHs) with 24-hour AER16 micrograms/min and in 15 EHs with 24-hour AERor = 16 micrograms/min, the day- and nighttime behavior of creatinine clearance (Ccr), as well as AER clearance (AER-C) and fractional clearance (AER-FC), and behavior of blood pressure (BP) was evaluated. Patients with 24-hour AER16 micrograms/min showed significantly higher values of 24-hour and daytime Ccr than the other group of EHs, while during the night period, there were no significant differences between the two grou…

Physical inactivity from youth to adulthood and adult cardiometabolic risk profile

2020

Adults with a low physical activity (PA) level are at increased risk for cardiometabolic diseases, but little is known on the association between physical inactivity since youth and cardiometabolic health in adulthood. We investigated the association of persistent physical inactivity from youth to adulthood with adult cardiometabolic risk factors. Data were drawn from the ongoing Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study with seven follow-ups between 1980 and 2011 (baseline age 3–18 years, n = 1961). Physical activity data from a standardized questionnaire was expressed as a PA-index. Using the PA-index, four groups were formed: 1)persistently physically inactive (n = 246), 2)decreasingly ac…

Factors Affecting Early Mortality and 1-Year Outcomes in Young Women With ST-Segment-Elevation Myocardial Infarction Aged Less Than or Equal to 45 Ye…

2018

Given that up to 2% of patients with myocardial infarction (MI) are young women, the purpose of this study was to evaluate factors affecting outcomes in young women with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) aged less than or equal to 45 years. We evaluated 796 women with STEMI aged less than or equal to 45 years between 2007 and 2014, and mortality was 4.0%. Death occurred more often in women with prehospital sudden cardiac arrest, and severe symptoms of heart failure; less commonly, the women were subjected to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), with a higher rate of incomplete revascularization. Beta blockers (BB) and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors were frequ…

Fibrinolytic parameters in normotensive pregnancy with intrauterine fetal growth retardation and in severe preeclampsia

1991

In pregnancy a decrease in fibrinolytic activity, which is due to an increase in plasminogen activator inhibitor activity and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 and type 2, has been described. Because the placenta is a source of both type 1 and type 2 plasminogen activator inhibitor, we have studied them and other fibrinolytic parameters in a group of normotensive pregnant women with intrauterine fetal growth retardation and in two groups of women with preeclampsia, with or without intrauterine growth retardation. A significant increase in plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 antigen and plasminogen activator inhibitor activity was observed in preeclampsia, with or without intrauterin…

Associations of Sex Hormones and Hormonal Status With Arterial Stiffness in a Female Sample From Reproductive Years to Menopause

2021

Objective: Loss of sex hormones has been suggested to underlie menopause-associated increment in cardiovascular risk. We investigated associations of sex hormones with arterial stiffness in 19–58-years-old women. We also studied associations of specific hormonal stages, including natural menstrual cycle, cycle with combined oral contraceptives (COC) and menopausal status with or without hormone therapy (HT), with arterial stiffness. Methods: This study includes repeated measurements of 65 healthy women representing reproductive (n=16 natural, n=10 COC-users) and menopause (n=5 perimenopausal, n=26 postmenopausal, n=8 HT-users) stages. Arterial stiffness outcomes were aortic pulse wave veloc…
