Intake and milk production of goats grazing Sulla forage under different stocking rates

This investigation aimed to individuate the dietary factors affecting the milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentration in goats grazing herbaceous pasture and, particularly, to verify the relationship linking the diet crude protein (CP) content to MUN. A total of 205 individual observations regarding dietary and milk variables of 37 Girgentana goats involved in two experiments were used. Goats, averaging 154±14 days in milk and 38.1±5.4 kg of live weight, grazed on swards and received 500 g/d of barley meal. Distribution and seasonal dynamics of Cryptomonads in Sicilian water bodies

Several species with a relevant ecological importance belong to Cryptophyta. Nevertheless, species-level identification from microscopic observations is problematic, lacking recent taxonomic keys. In this study we report our observations on distribution and seasonal dynamics of Cryptomonads in 33 Sicilian water bodies, as well as the main taxonomical problems we encountered. Species of the genera Cryptomonas and Plagioselmis are the most common in the examined water bodies. Their biomass seasonal trends usually show a peak in late winter and early spring. Saving time when measuring BET isotherms.

The measurement of adsorption isotherms and the detn. of surface properties of a solid by means of the BET equation usually takes a lot of time as it involves measurement of several dynamic adsorption curves each at a given gas pressure. Two different timesaving approaches are suggested: (a) the beginning of a single dynamic curve is considered and (b) the beginnings of a no. of different dynamic curves is considered. Approach (a) is less time consuming than approach (b), where approach (b) yields more accurate ests. of the BET-parameters. Assessment of Granger causality by nonlinear model identification: application to short-term cardiovascular variability.

A method for assessing Granger causal relationships in bivariate time series, based on nonlinear autoregressive (NAR) and nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (NARX) models is presented. The method evaluates bilateral interactions between two time series by quantifying the predictability improvement (PI) of the output time series when the dynamics associated with the input time series are included, i.e., moving from NAR to NARX prediction. Mutual nonlinear prediction of cardiovascular variability series: Comparison between exogenous and autoregressive exogenous models

A model-based approach to perform mutual nonlinear prediction of short cardiovascular variability series is presented. The approach is based on identifying exogenous (X) and autoregressive exogenous (ARX) models by K-nearest neighbors local linear approximation, and estimates the predictability of a series given the other as the squared correlation between original and predicted values of the series. UDP-glucosyltransferase activity toward exogenous substrates in Drosophila melanogaster.

To investigate the capacity of Drosophila extracts to glucosylate exogenous substrates we have developed a fast and sensitive method for the detection of UDP-glucosyltransferase activity using 4-nitrophenol, 1-naphthol, or 2-naphthol as substrates. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to separate and quantitate the reaction products, allowing detection of activities that produced as little as 1 pmol of 2-naphthol glucoside (fluorescence detection) or 16 pmol of 4-nitrophenol glucoside (absorbance detection). Specific and global regulation of mRNA stability during osmotic stress in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Hyperosmotic stress yields reprogramming of gene expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. Most of this response is orchestrated by Hog1, a stress-activated, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) homologous to human p38. We investigated, on a genomic scale, the contribution of changes in transcription rates and mRNA stabilities to the modulation of mRNA amounts during the response to osmotic stress in wild-type and hog1 mutant cells. Nonlinear mode coupling in a birefringent microstructured fiber tuned by externally applied hydrostatic pressure

We studied the effect of power coupling between two linearly polarized modes, which occurs during nonlinear propagation in an externally tuned birefringent microstructured fiber. We investigated both experimentally and numerically the possibility of measuring hydrostatic pressure by tracking the nonlinear power coupling between the fiber polarization modes. We analyzed the impact of the fiber length exposed to pressure and the input polarization state on the coupling efficiency.
