Trade and Interlegality

2019

The idea that the WTO legal system and its institutional bodies (especially the judicial branch) have developed a single-sided ides of what is good and would attempt to impose a deep-rooted liberalization agenda on the rest of world is hardly corroborated by an empirical analysis. Quite the contrary, recourse to a series of legal techniques has made it possible to leave open a space for reciprocal understanding and debate with other circuits of legality.

A method for determination of time- and temperature-dependences of stress threshold of linear-nonlinear viscoelastic transition: Energy-Based Approach

2011

A methodology for determination of time- and temperature-dependences of stress threshold of linear–nonlinear viscoelastic transition is proposed and validated by example of uniaxial creep of epoxy resin. Energy approach is applied for characterization of the region of linear viscoelasticity (LVE) and the threshold of LVE is given in the stress–strain representation as the master curve independent of time and temperature. Time- and temperature-dependences of the stress threshold are calculated by extending LVE theory and time–temperature superposition principles (TTSP) to the energy relations. Reasonable agreement between experimental data and calculations is obtained. It is shown that numbe…

Application of time-temperature superposition to energy limit of linear viscoelastic behavior

2009

The energy approach for evaluation of the limits of linear viscoelastic (LVE) behavior is considered. The approach of Foux and Bruller based on the Reiner-Weissenberg dynamic theory of strength is developed for the temperature effect. Value of the stored energy at the limit of LVE is considered as the material characteristic independent on loading conditions and temperature. Time–temperature superposition principle is extended for the energy calculations. Curves of the stored energy calculated for different temperatures are shifted to each other in the logarithmic time axes similarly as creep compliance and relaxation modulus curves in creep and tension tests, respectively. Temperature is c…

Optimal Control of the Lotka-Volterra Equations with Applications

2022

In this article, the Lotka-Volterra model is analyzed to reduce the infection of a complex microbiote. The problem is set as an optimal control problem, where controls are associated to antibiotic or probiotic agents, or transplantations and bactericides. Candidates as minimizers are selected using the Maximum Principle and the closed loop optimal solution is discussed. In particular a 2d-model is constructed with 4 parameters to compute the optimal synthesis using homotopies on the parameters.

A singular (p,q)-equation with convection and a locally defined perturbation

2021

We consider a parametric Dirichlet problem driven by the (p,q)-Laplacian and a reaction which is gradient dependent (convection) and the competing effects of two more terms, one a parametric singular term and a locally defined perturbation. We show that for all small values of the parameter the problem has a positive smooth solution.

Zeros of {-1,0,1}-power series and connectedness loci for self-affine sets

2006

We consider the set W of double zeros in (0,1) for power series with coefficients in {-1,0,1}. We prove that W is disconnected, and estimate the minimum of W with high accuracy. We also show that [2^(-1/2)-e,1) is contained in W for some small, but explicit e>0 (this was only known for e=0). These results have applications in the study of infinite Bernoulli convolutions and connectedness properties of self-affine fractals.

PV System Design for Off-Grid Applications

2015

Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology has the versatility and flexibility for developing off-grid electricity system for different regions, especially in remote rural areas. While conventionally straight forward designs were used to set up off-grid PV-based system in many areas for wide range of applications, it is now possible to adapt a smart design approach for the off-grid solar PV hybrid system. A range of off-grid system configurations are possible, depending upon load requirements and their electrical properties as well as on site-specific available energy resources. The overall goal of the off-gird system design should be such that it should provide maximum efficiency, reliability and …

Power of the state key principles

2018

Many years of research on the essence of the power of the state as one of the main determinants for shaping international relations allowed to formulate various concepts of modelling this phenomenon. The following article presents methodology of building the model of the power of the state. Existing and known from the literature models for determining power of the state have been discussed. Their advantages and disadvantages have been pointed out. Existing research, especially in the field of modelling the power of the state, indicates the popularity of developing models that are a conglomerate of various sectors of the state's functioning. On the other hand, there is a definite lack of pow…

The precautionary principle and management of uncertainties in EIAs – analysis of waste incineration cases in Finland

2013

This article examines whether and how the practice of environmental impact assessments (EIAs) serves the idea of the precautionary principle. The article provides an empirical examination and description of how uncertainties and risks were dealt with in conclusive outputs of EIAs of chosen example cases of Finnish waste incineration projects. The analysis focuses on the time when several incineration projects were in the planning phase in Finland and the effects of this development were seen as being controversial. The findings of the analysis are evaluated against a legislative and theoretical framework. The challenges and strengths of the practice are identified. The article suggests that…
