Algorithmic modeling and prototyping of a structural joint for freeform surfaces

2016

This paper describes a parametric approach in architectural design through the elaboration of a process for generating non-standard structural joints particularly suitable for the arrangement of freeform surfaces in which maximum adaptability of the system is required to join a different number of members converging in a node from generic directions. The algorithmic definitions, developed using the graphical editor Grasshopper integrated with Rhinoceros, allow the management of an integrated workflow from the conceptual design of freeform surface to the prototyping of a structural joint with 3D printing techniques.

Architettura di transizione. Im Printing 3D

2018

In recent years, the development of additive construction methods for the production of physical models starting from computerized ones has led to a return from the digital domain to the material one. A new "digital materiality" associated with 3D printing makes it possible to extend the imaginary of the contemporary architectural scene by consolidating the strong relationship between research and innovation. 3D printing is a rapid prototyping technique that allows the direct transposition of the digital model into its analogous material using a computer controlled nozzle to deposit small doses of material and compose the figure in space.

Redrawing the Past, reimaiging the Future. Gamification project for the reinterpretation of historical architecture

2021

The objectives of the work we present concern the reinterpretation of architectural traces of the past with a "gamification" project for educational laboratories to be activated in schools of different order and grade. The methodology used starts from the 3D-reconstruction of disappeared architectures, urban plots where the stratification lends itself to different interpretations, based on the documentary information found and the hypotheses that can be spent directly from reading the artefact. Then it translates everything into diversified outputs to tell the evolution of the monument and the site and its conjectural reconfiguration: from immersive 3D visualization to 3D printing of modula…

Formazione e trasformazione di un'immagine urbana. Ricostruzioni architettoniche tra l'asse della via Notarbartolo e il secondo tronco della via Libe…

2022

The contribution presented here is part of a work-in-progress project, which has as its focus the “extra-moenia” urban transformations suffered by the city of Palermo after World War II, with the aim of cataloging, reconstructing and restoring the remarkable heritage -lost in the years of the economic boom and building speculation- in three-dimensional virtual images. The analysis is part of the urban context affected by the extension of via Libertà starting from the intersection with via Notarbartolo, the transversal directional axis conceived in the Giarrusso Plan of 1887 as a connection to the Shipyards and built starting from the subdivisions of Villa Carini in the years 1891-1902. 2017

Reliability and Fabrication of Molds for Nanoimprinting

2010

During the last decade there has been a growing attention to nanoscaled materials and to the related technologies to produce them. The problems to overcome in the manufacturing of these kinds of items increase dramatically on decreasing the dimension of the devices. In this sense, the scientific research has been strongly stimulated to try to improve and optimize all the critical issues. One of the most attractive fields in nanomanufacturing is related to nanoimprinting, i.e. to the possibility to transfer a nanoscaled pattern from a mold to another substrate. In this technology, among the others, there are two main critical steps: the preparation of a good mold and the use of a correct rel…

Opuntia Ficus Indica based green composites for NPK fertilizer controlled release produced by compression molding and fused deposition modeling

2022

Excessive fertilization causes ecological problems due to leaching issues. To solve this problem and promote agriculture sustainability an innovative green composite for controlled release fertilizers was produced by adding NPK fertilizer flour to a biodegradable polymer with or without Opuntia Ficus Indica (OFI) particles. Six for- mulations were produced and employed for the fabrication of devices both for compression molding and fused deposition modeling (FDM). Both fillers displayed a good dispersion in the composites, excellent adhesion with the polymeric matrix and effectively acted as reinforcement. The decrease of NPK release rate (up to 30 days) was achieved using whole composites …

To solve this problem and promote agriculture sustainability an innovative green composite for controlled release fertilizers was produced by adding NPK fertilizer flour to a biodegradable polymer with or without Opuntia Ficus Indica (OFI) particles. Six formulations were produced and employed for the fabrication of devices both for compression molding (CM) and fused deposition modeling (FDM).
