Immigrant prisoners in Italy. Cultural mediation to reduce social isolation and increase migrant prisoner well-being?

2022

Purpose This study aims to highlight how easy it is for immigrants to break Italian law because of the country’s inadequate cultural and linguistic mediation service. Insufficiencies in this service also have a negative impact on both the psychological and physical health of migrant prisoners. Furthermore, Italian is used in legal disputes and prison, and reference is made to Italian culture, preventing migrants from understanding their position regarding the law. Design/methodology/approach This report concerns the psychological discomfort of migrant incarcerated individuals within Italian prisons due to national laws in force. Consideration is also given to the negative impact on the phy…

Hyperbolic discount curves: a reply to Ainslie

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Theory and Decision. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11238-013-9361-8 Ainslie (Theory and Decision, 73, 3-34, 2012) challenges our interpretation of the properties of hyperbolic discount curves in an iterated prisoners' dilemma (IPD) model. In this reply, we discuss the emergence of hyperbolic discount functions in the behavioral economics literature and evaluate their properties. Furthermore, we present a summarized version of our IPD model and evaluate Ainslie's points of contention.

Znaczenie rodziny w życiu skazanych poszkodowanych - opinie, oceny i potrzeby

2020

The questions addressed in the present paper concern the family relations of persons deprived of freedom who – remaining in the prison environment – have been degraded, that is convicts occupying the lowest rung in the informal penitentiary system, so-called victimized prisoners. They make a specific community, rejected and humiliated by other inmates. The necessity to ensure safety to them and help them protect their personal characteristics generates difficulties in activities of rehabilitative character. The aim of the research was to show the family relations of people degraded in the prison environment – a subject that has not been studied to date. The method of diagnostic survey was u…

Cooperación condicional y tercer sector

2000

The following paper analyzes the problem of social cooperation in the provision of a public good from an evolutionary perspective. To this end we depart from behavioral programs as the basic building block for modeling individuals in the social interaction, which is based on a generalized prisoners dilemma. In it, a population of individuals follow a conditional cooperative program, which some authors refer as to morality, and that we will show that is equivalent to the application of the principle of reciprocity. It will be shown that the degree of cooperation, that is the individual contribution toward the provision of the public good, is positive although sub-optimal. Finally, if we comp…

Female vs Males inmates: Authors' reply and sample size calculation

2019

Bruno and colleagues highlighted the relatively low absolute-percentage of psychiatric morbidity that we found in our sample, as compared to their male sample. They invited to the use of diagnostic tools, specific for personality disorders and suicidal risk factors, to better investigate these critical issues. In summary, our results showed high percentages of psychiatric morbidity (44%), especially anxiety and depression. Female inmates declared to be most stressed by the distance from family and loved ones, and they did not present any antisocial personality diagnosis. They also showed a resilient reaction to their situation, because more than a half of women requested a supportive psycho…

2011

Abstract The global spread of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), their high chronicity rates and their progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, are major public health problems. Research and intervention programmes for special population groups are needed in order to assess their infection risk and set up suitable prevention and control strategies. The manuscript is an official Position Paper on behalf of the following Scientific Societies: Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (A.I.S.F.), Italian Society of In…

Zagrożenie bezpieczeństwa osadzonych w przestrzeni izolacji więziennej

2019

Pomimo wielu przeobrażeń systemowych i penitencjarnych zjawisko nieformalnej degradacji nadal występuje, a skazani poszkodowani (zdegradowani) reprezentują specyficzną grupę osób odbywających karę pozbawienia wolności.
