The Radó–Kneser–Choquet theorem for $p$-harmonic mappings between Riemannian surfaces

In the planar setting the Rad\'o-Kneser-Choquet theorem states that a harmonic map from the unit disk onto a Jordan domain bounded by a convex curve is a diffeomorphism provided that the boundary mapping is a homeomorphism. We prove the injectivity criterion of Rad\'o-Kneser-Choquet for $p$-harmonic mappings between Riemannian surfaces. In our proof of the injecticity criterion we approximate the $p$-harmonic map with auxiliary mappings that solve uniformly elliptic systems. We prove that each auxiliary mapping has a positive Jacobian by a homotopy argument. I prove that $$\dim_{\mathrm{H}} [A + \theta B] \geq \alpha + \beta \cdot \tfrac{1 - \alpha}{2 - \alpha}$$ for all $\theta \in \mathbb{R} \, \setminus \, E$, where $\dim_{\mathrm{H}} E = 0$.

Economic strain and foreign language attainment: A Polish perspective

Foreign language learning is not only a personal endeavor, but also an activity that takes place within a social support system. In times of economic crisis adverse economic conditions handicap parents’ educational investments. For this reason a student’s development of foreign language skills, limited to the school context, may suffer. This study sheds more light on the experience and effect of economic strain in Polish secondary grammar school students who learn English as a foreign language. The results corroborate studies in the field and demonstrate that high achievers have low perceptions of economic strain.
Automatic surrogate modelling technique selection based on features of optimization problems

A typical scenario when solving industrial single or multiobjective optimization problems is that no explicit formulation of the problem is available. Instead, a dataset containing vectors of decision variables together with their objective function value(s) is given and a surrogate model (or metamodel) is build from the data and used for optimization and decision-making. Agent assisted interactive algorithm for computationally demanding multiobjective optimization problems

We generalize the applicability of interactive methods for solving computationally demanding, that is, time-consuming, multiobjective optimization problems. For this purpose we propose a new agent assisted interactive algorithm. It employs a computationally inexpensive surrogate problem and four different agents that intelligently update the surrogate based on the preferences specified by a decision maker. In this way, we decrease the waiting times imposed on the decision maker during the interactive solution process and at the same time decrease the amount of preference information expected from the decision maker. Hysteretic Systems Subjected to Delta Correlated Input

The paper deals with the evaluation of the probabilistic response of a single degree of freedom elastic-perfectly plastic system subjected to a delta correlated input process. The probabilistic characterisation of the response is here obtained by considering the accumulated plastic deformations as a compound homogeneous Poisson process independent of the external input. In this case the former can be considered as an external noise acting on the linear system. A closed form solution is also obtained and the analytic expression is compared with the customary Monte-Carlo method.
