Feature Extractors for Describing Vehicle Routing Problem Instances
2016
The vehicle routing problem comes in varied forms. In addition to usual variants with diverse constraints and specialized objectives, the problem instances themselves – even from a single shared source - can be distinctly different. Heuristic, metaheuristic, and hybrid algorithms that are typically used to solve these problems are sensitive to this variation and can exhibit erratic performance when applied on new, previously unseen instances. To mitigate this, and to improve their applicability, algorithm developers often choose to expose parameters that allow customization of the algorithm behavior. Unfortunately, finding a good set of values for these parameters can be a tedious task that…
Modelling Recurrent Events for Improving Online Change Detection
2016
The task of online change point detection in sensor data streams is often complicated due to presence of noise that can be mistaken for real changes and therefore affecting performance of change detectors. Most of the existing change detection methods assume that changes are independent from each other and occur at random in time. In this paper we study how performance of detectors can be improved in case of recurrent changes. We analytically demonstrate under which conditions and for how long recurrence information is useful for improving the detection accuracy. We propose a simple computationally efficient message passing procedure for calculating a predictive probability distribution of …
Data mining framework for random access failure detection in LTE networks
2014
Sleeping cell problem is a particular type of cell degradation. There are various software and hardware reasons that might cause such kind of cell outage. In this study a cell becomes sleeping because of Random Access Channel (RACH) failure. This kind of network problem can appear due to misconfiguration, excessive load or software/firmware problem at the Base Station (BS). In practice such failure might cause network performance degradation, which is hardly traceable by an operator. In this paper we present a data mining based framework for the detection of problematic cells. In its core is the analysis of event sequences reported by a User Equipment (UE) to a serving BS. The choice of N i…
Visual understanding of divergence and curl: Visual cues promote better learning
2019
Prior research has shown that students struggle to indicate whether vector field plots have zero or non-zero curl or divergence. In an instruction-based eye-tracking study, we investigated whether visual cues (VC) provided in the vector field plot can foster students’ understanding of these concepts. The VC were only present during instruction and highlighted conceptual information about vector decomposition and partial derivatives. Thirty-two physics majors were assigned to two groups, one was instructed with VC about the problemsolving strategy, and one without. The results show that students in VC-condition performed better, responded with higher confidence, experienced less mental effor…

More educated, more mobile? Evidence from post-secondary education reform
2016
More educated, more mobile? Evidence from post-secondary education reform. Spatial Economic Analysis. This paper examines the causal impact of the level of education on within-country migration. To account for biases resulting from selection into post-secondary education, it uses a large-scale reform within the higher education system that gradually transformed former vocational colleges into polytechnics in Finland in the 1990s. This reform created quasi-exogenous variation in the supply of higher education over time and across regions. The results based on multinomial treatment effects models and population register data show that, overall, polytechnic graduates have a significantly highe…
A Cluster Analysis Approach to Profile Men and Women’s Volley Positions in Professional Tennis Matches (Doubles)
2021
(1) Background: Tennis ball tracking technology allows the aquirement of novel and reliable data about several performance indicators, such as volley positions. This information is key to understand match dynamics in doubles tennis and to better help preparing players for the demands they will face in match play. As such, the purpose of this study was to describe and compare the different types of volley positions in men’s and women’s doubles professional tennis. (2) Methods: Ball tracking data were collected for 46 women (Billie Jean King Cup) and 96 men’s doubles matches (Davis Cup). The variables used were the distance to the net, the distance to the centre of the court and the height of…

Labour market changes in Latvian economic sectors
2021
Covid-19 pandēmija skārusi gandrīz ikvienu, taču ir nozares, kuru darbība ir ierobežota vai pilnībā apturēta, tāpēc šī darba ietvaros tiek apskatītas darba tirgus izmaiņas Latvijas tautsaimniecības nozarēs laika periodā no 2008. – 2020.gadam.
Alumni in fabula. Rappresentazione e promozione di valori inclusivi mediante l’uso di arti performative nella formazione dei futuri docenti
2022
Academic literature provides us with evidence supporting the demand to device teacher training programs able to aim awareness and reflection about inclusive education themes, moving beyond the only theorical and technical knowledge. The present paper proposes to show a pedagogical experience aimed at Primary Education students of Palermo University, which intends to promote a process of critical thinking on the representation and conceptualization of disability and in‐ clusion, through a training methodology based on the use of performing arts for improving traditional Problem‐based Learning approaches.
