Thermophoretic separation of ultrafine particles in ferrofluids in thermal diffusion column under the effect of an MHD convection

2000

The aim of the paper is to evaluate the Soret coeAcient ST of colloidal particles in ferrofluids from measurements of an unsteady particle separation in a flat thermodiAusion column. The column theory is modified taking into account MHD eAects of thermal convection aAected by a concentration buoyancy force. It is shown that the Hartmann eAect, not only in hydrocarbon based colloids but also in ionic magnetic fluids of relatively high electric conductivity, does not influence significantly the particle separation dynamics. From measurements, positive values of ST of surfacted particles in tetradecane based colloids are calculated. An anisotropy of the Soret eAect in the presence of a uniform…

Matched asymptotic solution for the solute boundary layer in a converging axisymmetric stagnation point flow

2007

Abstract A novel boundary-layer solution is obtained by the method of matched asymptotic expansions for the solute distribution at a solidification front represented by a disk of finite radius R 0 immersed in an axisymmetric converging stagnation point flow. The detailed analysis reveals a complex internal structure of the boundary layer consisting of eight subregions. The development of the boundary layer starts from the rim region where the concentration, according to the obtained similarity solution, varies with the radius r along the solidification front as ∼ln 1/3 ( R 0 / r ). At intermediate radii, where the corresponding concentration is found to vary as ∼ln( R 0 / r ), the boundary …

Low-Prandtl Number Natural Convection in Volumetrically Heated Rectangular Enclosures - III. Shallow Cavity, AR=0.25

2001

Abstract Natural convection in a volumetrically heated rectangular enclosure filled with a low-Prandtl number (Pr=0.0321) fluid was studied by direct numerical two-dimensional simulation. The enclosure had isothermal side walls and adiabatic top/bottom walls. The aspect ratio was 4 and the Grashof number Gr, based on conductive maximum temperature and cavity width, ranged from 3.79 × 104 to 1.26 × 109. According to the value of Gr, different flow regimes were obtained: steady-state, periodic, and chaotic. The first instability of the steady-state solution occurred at Gr≈3×105; the resulting time-periodic flow field consisted of a central rising plume and of convection rolls, periodically ge…

Effect of a finite external heat transfer coefficient on the Darcy-Bénard instability in a vertical porous cylinder

2013

Any other use requires prior permission of the author and the American Institute of Physics. Article appears in Volume 25 issue 4 of the journal: http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4799253 The onset of thermal convection in a vertical porous cylinder is studied by considering the heating from below and the cooling from above as caused by external forced convection processes. These processes are parametrised through a finite Biot number, and hence through third-kind, or Robin, temperature conditions imposed on the lower and upper b…

Soret coefficient of nanoparticles in ferrofluids in the presence of a magnetic field

1998

Experiments on a nonstationary separation of nanometer-sized Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O particles of hydrocarbon-based ferrocolloids in a flat vertical thermal diffusion column are performed. By using a modified separation theory which accounts for a one-dimensional mixed (thermal and concentration) convection in the column, the Soret coefficient of lyophilized nanoparticles from the separation curves are calculated. It is shown that in a zero magnetic field particles are transferring toward decreasing temperatures. The thermal diffusion ratio αT reaches a value αT≈+20. A significant influence of a uniform magnetic field B on particle separation is observed. If B is oriented along the temperature gradi…

MHD free convection in a liquid-metal filled cubic enclosure. II. Internal heating

2002

The buoyancy-driven magnetohydrodynamic flow in a liquid-metal filled cubic enclosure was investigated by three-dimensional numerical simulation. The enclosure was differentially heated at two opposite vertical walls, all other walls being adiabatic, and a uniform magnetic field was applied orthogonal to the temperature gradient and to the gravity vector. The Rayleigh number was 105 and the Prandtl number was 0.0321 (characteristic of Pb–17Li at 573 K). The Hartmann number was made to vary between 102 and 103 and the electrical conductance of the walls between 0 and ∞. The continuity, momentum and enthalpy transport equations, in conjunction with a Poisson equation for the electric potentia…

Efficient finite-difference scheme for solving some heat transfer problems with convection in multilayer media

2000

Abstract An efficient finite-difference method for solving the heat transfer equation with piecewise discontinuous coefficients in a multilayer domain is developed. The method may be considered as a generalization of the finite-volumes method for the layered systems. We apply this method with the aim to reduce the 3D or 2D problem to the corresponding series of 2D or 1D problems. In the case of constant piecewise coefficients, we obtain the exact discrete approximation of the steady-state 1D boundary-value problem.

Thermoconvective instabilities in an inclined porous channel heated from below

2011

Abstract The thermoconvective instability in an inclined rectangular channel filled with a fluid saturated porous medium and heated from below with a uniform flux is investigated. A stationary parallel buoyant flow with a linear temperature change in the transverse direction is considered. The linear stability to transverse and longitudinal roll disturbances of this basic state is examined. The thermoconvective instability onset of transverse rolls occurs when the Darcy–Rayleigh number exceeds a critical value, that increases with the inclination angle. The critical Darcy–Rayleigh number is discontinuous at the inclination angle 23.4749° above the horizontal. It is shown that, when the incl…

Recent advances in the preparation of zeolites for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx in diesel engines

2019

Metal-exchanged zeolites with small pore sizes have attracted much attention in recent years due to their application in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx in diesel engines. Typically, copper-chabazite (e.g. Cu-SSZ-13) has been gradually used as an SCR catalyst in heavy-duty diesel vehicles over the last decade due to its relatively excellent catalytic performance and stability. However, most SSZ-13 zeolites are still prepared via the traditional hydrothermal process in the presence of organic templates, requiring consecutive solid separation and thermal treatment steps to achieve the final zeolite products. In recent years, several strategies for the environmentally friendly p…

Investigation of Flow and Heat Transfer in Corrugated-Undulated Plate Heat Exchangers

2000

An experimental and numerical investigation of heat transfer and fluid flow was conducted for corrugated-undulated plate heat exchanger configurations under transitional and weakly turbulent conditions. For a given geometry of the corrugated plates the geometrical characteristics of the undulated plates, the angle formed by the latter with the main flow direction, and the Reynolds number were made to vary. Distributions of the local heat transfer coefficient were obtained by using liquid-crystal thermography, and surface-averaged values were computed; friction coefficients were measured by wall pressure tappings. Overall heat transfer and pressure drop correlations were derived. Three-dimen…
