Experimental research of surfaced nanoparticle thermal transport in a porous medium

2018

Abstract Experimental research on thermally induced nanocolloid transport in a porous environment is presented. Addition of excess surfactant to a colloid with dispersed phase made of surfaced nanoparticles results in a decrease of effective Soret coefficient in a porous environment. It is shown that with sufficient amounts of surfactant added, this effect extends to a reversal of nanoparticle thermophoretic transport direction, and that the effect shows a tendency of saturation. A mechanism of thermal transport that involves slip velocity of surfactant molecules appearing near pore walls is evaluated as a possible cause of the decrease of Soret coefficient. Effects of temperature on partic…

Continuous-Flow Synthesis of Ni(0) Nanoparticles Using a Cone Channel Nozzle or a Micro Coaxial-Injection Mixer

2015

To synthesize nickel(0) nanoparticles by wet chemical reduction using hydrazine with an average size distribution below 100 nm, two different reactor concepts were developed. With a cone channel nozzle, the reactant solutions were sprayed into a batch for further processing and reduction at elevated temperatures. Another concept uses a micro-coaxial injection mixer connected to a heated tube to establish a fully continuously operating reactor. To shorten the time for reduction of the nickel, salt temperatures up to 180 °C are applied. To avoid uncontrolled residence time, the whole system was pressurized up to 80 bar. Approximately 80 L reactant solution, i.e., 1 kg nickel(0) nanoparticles,…

Effect of laser radiation upon heat and mass transfer in two-component elastic semitransparent layer

2004

Abstract In present paper the effect of the correlation between spectral radiative characteristics of different lasers and absorptive characteristics of laser irradiated two-component elastic semitransparent material upon coupled thermal, diffusive and elastic processes in the layer is examined. Irradiated material is supposed to consist of elastic matrix and gaseous admixture. Investigations are carried out within the model applied early to the study of mentioned coupled processes in the layer subjected to thermal infrared radiation. Calculations were carried out for four different infrared lasers. Peculiarities of heat and admixture mass transfer caused by laser irradiation are establishe…

Optofluidic microconvection with magnetic nanoparticles: Novel interaction of thermal diffusion and magnetic field

2021

Abstract Light-matter interactions are exploited in many applications, whereas superparamagnetic nanoparticles allow to introduce magnetic field control in diverse fluid environments. We study the structure of laser-induced thermal lens in thin layers of ferromagnetic colloid and predict significant magnetoconvective motion around the beam spot. It was found that localized heating depletes/accumulates magnetic nanoparticles in the beam-spot by thermal diffusion and collective magnetic interactions of nanoparticles produce strong microconvective currents. This mode of mass transport can be controlled by magnetic field. We expect the novel magnetosolutal microconvective coupling, which we des…

Effects of irregular two-dimensional and three-dimensional surface roughness in turbulent channel flows

2012

Abstract Wall-resolved Large Eddy Simulation of fully developed turbulent channel flows over two different rough surfaces is performed to investigate on the effects of irregular 2D and 3D roughness on the turbulence. The two geometries are obtained through the superimposition of sinusoidal functions having random amplitudes and different wave lengths. In the 2D configuration the irregular shape in the longitudinal direction is replicated in the transverse one, while in the 3D case the sinusoidal functions are generated both in streamwise and spanwise directions. Both channel walls are roughened in such a way as to obtain surfaces with statistically equivalent roughness height, but different…

Turbulences of the supersonic gas flow during cold spraying and their negative effects: A DNS CFD analysis coupled with experimental observation and …

2020

Abstract This paper investigates the phenomenological flow during cold spraying through DNS CFD analysis and experimental observations. The transient DNS computation shows that the gas flow begins to be instable inside the nozzle and generates self-sustained intermittent swirls across the nozzle exit due the shearing behavior of the flow. There is alternate swirling within the separated sheared layers on top and then on bottom of the jet, at sporadic time intervals. The swirls are not strictly periodic in nature, but they recur with an irregular frequency. The temperature field exhibits analogous variation and the thermal turbulence produces a heating confinement within the end zone of the …

The Nukiyama Curve in Water Spray Cooling: its Derivation from Temperature-Time Histories and its Dependence on the Quantities that Characterize Drop…

2007

Abstract Heat transfer from hot aluminium walls to cold water sprays was investigated. The method used was the transient two-side symmetric cooling of a planar aluminium target, previously heated to temperatures of up to 750 K, by twin sprays issuing from full-cone swirl spray nozzles of various gauge. The target’s mid-plane temperature was recorded during the cooling transient by thin-foil K thermocouples and a high-frequency data acquisition system. In order to determine the wall temperature Tw, the wall heat flux q w ″ and the q w ″ - T w heat transfer (Nukiyama) curve, two different approaches were used: the first was based on the solution of an inverse heat conduction problem, the seco…

Numerical study of two-dimensional wet foam over a range of shear rates

2017

The shear rheology of two-dimensional foam is investigated over a range of shear rates with the numerical DySMaL model, which features dynamically deformable bubbles. It is found that at low shear rates, the rheological behavior of the system can be characterized by a yield stress power-law constitutive equation that is consistent with experimental findings and can be understood in terms of soft glassy rheology models. At low shear rates, the system rheology is also found to be subject to a scaling law involving the bubble size, the surface tension, and the viscosity of the carrier fluid. At high shear rates, the model produces a dynamic phase transition with a sudden change in the flow pat…
