The effect of wind on jumping distance in ski jumping – fairness assessed

The special wind compensation system recently adopted by Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS; International Ski Federation) to consider the effects of changing wind conditions has caused some controversy. Here, the effect of wind on jumping distance in ski jumping was studied by means of computer simulation and compared with the wind compensation factors used by FIS during the World Cup season 2009/2010. The results showed clearly that the effect of increasing head/tail wind on jumping distance is not linear: +17.4 m/ − 29.1 m, respectively, for a wind speed of 3 m/s. M.HhaI is a DNA methyltransferase from Haemophilus hemolyticus that catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM) to the C5 position of a cytosine. This enzyme is a paradigmatic model for C5 DNA methyltransferases due to its major homology to mammalian enzymes and to the availability of high-resolution structures of the DNA–enzyme complex. Although the global burden of leptospirosis remains enormous and new aspects of the disease are constantly recognised, little progress has been achieved in the field of leptospirosis therapeutics and queries regarding the utility of antibiotics in the late severe form of the disease remain. From the currently existing data, conclusions on the efficacy of antibiotic administration in severe or late disease cannot easily be drawn, since clinical trials have different selection criteria and may focus on Leptospira serovars with different virulence. Program AMYR, originally written by S. Fraga (University of Alberta, Canada), allows for the calculation of molecular associations using a pair-wise atom-atom potential. The interaction energy is evaluated through a 1/R expansion. Our improved version includes a dispersion energy term in the potential corrected by damping functions, the possibility of carrying out energy minimizations through variable metric methods, as well as the optional calculation of geometrical and topological indices. Citrus, and particularly sweet oranges, are very recalcitrant to anther culture. In this paper it was evaluated for the first time the response of 27 genotypes of Citrus sinensis and of one hybrid C. clementina × C. sinensis, to in vitro anther culture. Ten genotypes of sweet oranges showed embryogenic callus induction, mostly blood sweet oranges genotypes, such as Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinelli.
