Pituitary-adrenal responses to corticotropin-releasing factor in late onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency

Intravenous corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) were administered in patients with adult onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency to compare their diagnostic capability as well as to investigate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function in this disorder. Responses of 17-hydroxyprogesterone, which were markedly elevated compared with controls, were identical with CRF and ACTH. However, intravenous ACTH resulted in higher androstenedione levels in comparison to CRF. Adrenocorticotropin hormone also resulted in decreased cortisol responses, confirming a defect in steroidogenesis, a finding that was not evident with CRF. Physiological Estrogen Replacement May Enhance the Effectiveness of the Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Agonist in the Treatment of Hirsutism

GnRH agonists (GnRH-A) have been used for the treatment of hirsutism in women with ovarian hyperandrogenism. However, significant side-effects, including vasomotor symptoms and bone loss, have prevented the long term use of this therapy. In this study, we evaluated the effects of low dose (physiological) estrogen replacement on the side-effects and clinical and hormonal parameters of 22 hirsute women with ovarian hyperandrogenism when treated with a long-acting GnRH-A, Decapeptyl. The endocrine pattern of late onset adrenal hyperplasia (21-hydroxylase deficiency)

We describe 5 adult women with severe hirsutism due to late onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Diagnosis was performed on the finding of high serum 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP) levels with a marked hyperresponse to an ACTH test. The endocrine study showed in most patients a gonadotropin behavior similar to that observed in classical polycystic ovary (PCO) syndrome. Prolactin levels were slightly increased in basal conditions and presented an exaggerated response to TRH stimulation.

Responses of serum androgenic-anabolic and catabolic hormones to prolonged strength training.

Endocrine and neuromuscular effects of prolonged strength training were investigated in 21 strength-trained male subjects during the course of a 24-week progressive strength training and during a subsequent detraining period of 12 weeks. Maximal isometric leg extensor force increased by 19% (P less than 0.001) during the first 20 weeks, followed by a plateau during the 4 latest weeks of training. Correlations of female steroid hormone receptors with histologic features in meningiomas.

A series of 39 samples were obtained from meningiomas in 28 patients in order to investigate the relationships of the oestrogen receptor (OER) and progesterone receptor (PR) with the tumoural subtype and some histological features. Twenty-one samples were positive (greater than 10 fmole/mg protein), 7 were OER-PR-negative, and 1 was positive in both receptors. Twenty-two samples were considered as syncitial, 7 transitional, 7 fibroblastic and 3 angioblastic.
