Supercontinuum optimization for dual-soliton based light sources using genetic algorithms in a grid platform

2014

We present a numerical strategy to design fiber based dual pulse light sources exhibiting two predefined spectral peaks in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime. The frequency conversion is based on the soliton fission and soliton self-frequency shift occurring during super- continuum generation. The optimization process is carried out by a genetic algorithm that provides the optimum input pulse parameters: wavelength, temporal width and peak power. This algorithm is implemented in a Grid platform in order to take advantage of distributed computing. These results are useful for optical coherence tomography applications where bell-shaped pulses located in the second near-infrared wi…

Propagation pattern analysis during atrial fibrillation based on sparse modeling.

2012

In this study, sparse modeling is introduced for the estimation of propagation patterns in intracardiac atrial fibrillation (AF) signals. The estimation is based on the partial directed coherence function, derived from fitting a multivariate autoregressive model to the observed signal using least-squares (LS) estimation. The propagation pattern analysis incorporates prior information on sparse coupling as well as the distance between the recording sites. Two optimization methods are employed for estimation of the model parameters, namely, the adaptive group least absolute selection and shrinkage operator (aLASSO), and a novel method named the distance-adaptive group LASSO (dLASSO). Using si…

Propagation pattern analysis during atrial fibrillation based on the adaptive group LASSO.

2012

The present study introduces sparse modeling for the estimation of propagation patterns in intracardiac atrial fibrillation (AF) signals. The estimation is based on the partial directed coherence (PDC) function, derived from fitting a multivariate autoregressive model to the observed signals. A sparse optimization method is proposed for estimation of the model parameters, namely, the adaptive group least absolute selection and shrinkage operator (aLASSO). In simulations aLASSO was found superior to the commonly used least-squares (LS) estimation with respect to estimation performance. The normalized error between the true and estimated model parameters dropped from 0.200.04 for LS estimatio…

Jet evolution in a dense medium: event-by-event fluctuations and multi-particle correlations

2017

International audience; We study the gluon distribution produced via successive medium-induced branchings by an energetic jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma. We show that under suitable approximations, the jet evolution is a Markovian stochastic process, which is exactly solvable. For this process, we construct exact analytic solutions for all the n-point correlation functions describing the gluon distribution in the space of energy [M. A. Escobedo, E. Iancu, Event-by-event fluctuations in the medium-induced jet evolution, JHEP 05 (2016) 008. arXiv: arXiv:1601.03629 , doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/JHEP05(2016)008 , M. A. Escobedo, E. Measurement of South Pole ice transparency with the IceCube LED calibration system

2013

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, approximately 1 km^3 in size, is now complete with 86 strings deployed in the Antarctic ice. IceCube detects the Cherenkov radiation emitted by charged particles passing through or created in the ice. To realize the full potential of the detector, the properties of light propagation in the ice in and around the detector must be well understood. This report presents a new method of fitting the model of light propagation in the ice to a data set of in-situ light source events collected with IceCube. The resulting set of derived parameters, namely the measured values of scattering and absorption coefficients vs. depth, is presented and a comparison of IceCube …

Deeply bound pionic atoms with resonant Compton scattering

1993

Abstract We study the contribution to ordinary Compton nuclear scattering of the resonant channel γ + A → (A′ π − ) → γ + A with the π − bound in the nucleus. We show that the interference of this resonant channel with background amplitudes produces significant peaks in the elastic backward differential cross section as a function of the incoming photon energy for light and medium-size nuclei. We also find that for light nuclei the signals in forward Compton scattering or in the total photonuclear cross section are big enough to be observed, provided there is a good resolution in the photon beam. The reaction is particularly suited to find deeply bound pionic states in medium-size nuclei, o…

Non-reflecting boundary conditions for acoustic propagation in ducts with acoustic treatment and mean flow

2011

We consider a time-harmonic acoustic scattering problem in a 2D infinite waveguide with walls covered with an absorbing material, in the presence of a mean flow assumed uniform far from the source. To make this problem suitable for a finite element analysis, the infinite domain is truncated. This paper concerns the derivation of a non-reflecting boundary condition on the artificial boundary by means of a Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map based on a modal decomposition. Compared with the hard-walled guide case, several difficulties are raised by the presence of both the liner and the mean flow. In particular, acoustic modes are no longer orthogonal and behave asymptotically like the modes of a …

Wireless Interference Estimation Using Machine Learning in a Robotic Force-Seeking Scenario

2019

Cyber-physical systems are systems governed by the laws of physics that are tightly controlled by computer-based algorithms and network-based sensing and actuation. Wireless communication technology is envisioned to play a primary role in conducting the information flows within such systems. A practical industrial wireless use case involving a robot manipulator control system, an integrated wireless force-torque sensor, and a remote vision-based observer is constructed and the performance of the cyber-physical system is examined. By using readings from the remote observer, an estimation system is developed using machine learning regression techniques. We demonstrate the practicality of comb…
