Foreed flushing of branch segments as a method for obtaining reactive explants of mature Quercus robur trees for micropropagation

1994

The aim of this study was to micropropagate mature Quercus robur L. trees when material retaining physiologically juvenile characteristics (stump sprouts, epicormic shoots) is not available. Branch segments from 70–300 year-old trees were force-flushed and the flushed, partially rejuvenated or reinvigorated shoots were used as a source of explants for establishment of cultures. In vitro establishment and multiplication was achieved with seven of the eight selected trees. The proliferation capacity of cultures of vertically placed explants declined after several subcultures, but efficient shoot multiplication was achieved by culturing decapitated shoots placed horizontally on GD medium suppl…

Waves propagation in a fractional viscoelastic continuum

2009

In this paper the analysis of waves scattering in a fractional-type viscoelastic material is analyzed. Such a material involves, in the constitutive equation, the presence of noninteger order derivatives of the strain filed yielding a memory-type behavior of the material model. The presence of such a term has been also justified experimentally reporting the relaxation modulus of polymeric materials, obtained from experimental test, that are well-fitted by a powerlaw of fractional order. Some numerical applications reporting the standing-waves condition of an 1D solid varying the fractional differentiation order has also been reported in the paper.

An experimental testbed of an Internet of Underwater Things

2020

A number of critical features have so far slowed down the realization of an Internet of Underwater Things. The most relevant of these aspects are related to the unreliability of the communication channel, the long propagation delay and the effect of severe multi-path and fading. This paper presents the design and development of a hybrid underwater-terrestrial IoT where different underwater sensors collect heterogeneous data and use marine acoustic modems to send information to a gateway device; this is able to set up a long distance link, implemented through a LoRaWAN connection, to forward data to a remote cloud for further processing. Performance of this system has been tested in a real s…

A Design Methodology for Low-Power MCML Ring Oscillators

2007

In this paper, a low-power design method for MCML based ring oscillators is presented. The proposed method takes into account the parasitic capacitances of the MOS transistors. To validate it, some ring oscillators with different oscillation frequencies were designed in a 0.18 mum CMOS technology. SPICE simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the design method.

A Neural Architecture for Segmentation and Modelling of Range Data

2003

A novel, two stage, neural architecture for the segmentation of range data and their modeling with undeformed superquadrics is presented. The system is composed by two distinct neural stages: a SOM is used to perform data segmentation, and, for each segment, a multi-layer feed-forward network performs model estimation. The topology preserving nature of the SOM algorithm makes this architecture suited to cluster data with respect to sudden curvature variations. The second stage is designed to model and compute the inside-outside function of an undeformed superquadric in whatever attitude, starting form the (x, y, z) data triples. The network has been trained using backpropagation, and the we…

AQM Stability in Multiple Bottleneck Networks

2004

In this paper, we highlight that multiple bottlenecks can affect the performance of active queue management controllers, which are usually configured on a single bottleneck basis, as if each controller were the only element regulating the TCP traffic along its path. To see this, we consider a network scenario where RED is configured at each router, according to previously developed control theoretic techniques. These configuration rules assure stability in a single bottleneck scenario. Yet, we show that instability may arise when two link become congested. We justify this result through a multiple bottleneck model and give guidelines for new cooperative AQM controllers.

Search for ultrahigh-energy tau neutrinos with IceCube

2012

The first dedicated search for ultrahigh-energy (UHE) tau neutrinos of astrophysical origin was performed using the IceCube detector in its 22-string configuration with an instrumented volume of roughly 0.25  km3. The search also had sensitivity to UHE electron and muon neutrinos. After application of all selection criteria to approximately 200 live-days of data, we expect a background of 0.60±0.19(stat)+0.56−0.58(syst) events and observe three events, which after inspection, emerge as being compatible with background but are kept in the final sample. Therefore, we set an upper limit on neutrinos of all flavors from UHE astrophysical sources at 90% C.L. of E2νΦ90(νx)<16.3×10−8  GeV cm−2…

Models of SHS: An overview

2007

International audience; The theoretical models of SHS based on lamellar or cellular approximations of the heterogeneous reactive media are comparatively analyzed. It is shown that the ratio of the reaction time to the characteristic time of heat transfer between particles is a decisive parameter for the combustion wave propagation. When the time of reaction is shorter than the time of heat exchange, the combustion occurs in a discrete mode; in the opposite case, a quasi-homogeneous combustion mode occurs. Development of the discrete cellular model does not discard the quasi-homogeneous approach but markedly extends the scope of combustion theory. This extension enables explanation of many o…

Differential method for modelling dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides

2008

International audience; This paper demonstrates the efficiency of the differential method, a conventional grating theory, to investigate dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs), known to be a potential solution for optical interconnects. The method is used to obtain the mode effective indices (both real and imaginary parts) and the mode profiles. The results obtained with the differential method are found to be in good agreement with those provided by the effective index method or finite elements. The versatility of the differential method is demonstrated by considering complex configurations such as trapezoidal waveguides or DLSPPWs lying on a finite width metal st…

A geometric street scattering channel model for car-to-car communication systems

2011

This paper presents a geometric street scattering channel model for car-to-car (C2C) communication systems under line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) propagation conditions. Starting from the geometric model, we develop a stochastic reference channel model, where the scatterers are uniformly distributed in rectangles in the form of stripes parallel to both sides of the street. We derive analytical expressions for the probability density functions (PDFs) of the angle-of-departure (AOD) and the angle-of-arrival (AOA). We also investigate the Doppler power spectral density (PSD) and the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the proposed model, assuming that the mobile transmitter (MT) and the mo…
