Identification of quality care indicators in prostate cancer.

2017

213 Background: Despite the attempts made to improve prostate cancer management with the development and implementation of clinical practice guidelines, the inefficiencies and differences that usually occur in ordinary clinical care of patients with prostate cancer significantly contribute to increase the variations in the patterns of care and patients outcomes, and costs to the health system. The goal of this project was to establish parameters for improving the care of patients with prostate cancer through the development and validation of quality indicators for the management of this disease. Methods: The ECO Foundation is a platform of experts representing the major Spanish hospitals i…

Recent cancer survival in Germany: An analysis of common and less common cancers

2014

The monitoring of cancer survival by population-based cancer registries is a prerequisite to evaluate the current quality of cancer care. Our study provides 1-, 5- and 10-year relative survival as well as 5-year relative survival conditional on 1-year survival estimates and recent survival trends for Germany using data from 11 population-based cancer registries, covering around one-third of the German population. Period analysis was used to estimate relative survival for 24 common and 11 less common cancer sites for the period 2007-2010. The German and the United States survival estimates were compared using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results 13 database. Trends in cancer surviv…

Molecular evidence for the inverse comorbidity between central nervous system disorders and cancers detected by transcriptomic meta-analyses.

2014

There is epidemiological evidence that patients with certain Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders have a lower than expected probability of developing some types of Cancer. We tested here the hypothesis that this inverse comorbidity is driven by molecular processes common to CNS disorders and Cancers, and that are deregulated in opposite directions. We conducted transcriptomic meta-analyses of three CNS disorders (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Schizophrenia) and three Cancer types (Lung, Prostate, Colorectal) previously described with inverse comorbidities. A significant overlap was observed between the genes upregulated in CNS disorders and downregulated in Cancers, as wel…

Optimization of Labeling PSMAHBED with Ethanol-Postprocessed 68Ga and Its Quality Control Systems

2017

Radiolabeling of the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) inhibitor Glu-NH-CO-NH-Lys(Ahx) using the 68Ga chelator HBED-CC (PSMAHBED) allows imaging of prostate cancer lesions because of high expression of PSMA in prostate carcinoma cells and in bone metastases and lymph nodes related to the disease. The aim of this work was to optimize labeling of 68Ga-PSMAHBED using the efficient cation-exchange postprocessing of 68Ga as well as the development of a thin-layer chromatography (TLC)-based quality control system. Methods: Labeling was optimized for online ethanol-postprocessed 68Ga eluate investigating various parameters, such as buffer molarity (0.1-1 M), temperature (25°C-90°C), tracer…

Autoantibody Inhibitor Eradication In Acquired Hemophilia Associated with Cancer: a Retrospective Analysis

2010

Abstract Abstract 1418 Introduction: Acquired hemophilia (AH), a rare autoimmune disorder primarily of adults, is typically characterized by the presence of IgG oligoclonal antibodies to the clotting factor VIII protein (FVIII). About 10–15% of patients with AH have an underlying malignancy, but the etiologic relationship of cancer to formation of FVIII inhibitor is yet to be determined. To date, there have been no published, comprehensive reviews on the efficacy of various treatments for AH in the context of either solid tumor or hematologic malignancies. Therefore, we have systematically reviewed 86 patients with cancer-associated AH from our own cancer center and from the published liter…

Luminescent Pt-II and Pt-IV Platinacycles with Anticancer Activity Against Multiplatinum-Resistant Metastatic CRC and CRPC Cell Models

2020

Platinum-based chemotherapy persists to be the only effective therapeutic option against a wide variety of tumours. Nevertheless, the acquisition of platinum resistance is utterly common, ultimately cornering conventional platinum drugs to only palliative in many patients. Thus, encountering alternatives that are both effective and non-cross-resistant is urgent. In this work, we report the synthesis, reduction studies, and luminescent properties of a series of cyclometallated (C,N,N')PtIV compounds derived from amine- imine ligands, and their remarkable efficacy at the high nanomolar range and complete lack of cross57 resistance, as an intrinsic property of the platinacycle, against multipl…

Automated prostate gland segmentation based on an unsupervised fuzzy C-means clustering technique using multispectral T1w and T2w MR imaging

2017

Prostate imaging analysis is difficult in diagnosis, therapy, and staging of prostate cancer. In clinical practice, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is increasingly used thanks to its morphologic and functional capabilities. However, manual detection and delineation of prostate gland on multispectral MRI data is currently a time-expensive and operator-dependent procedure. Efficient computer-assisted segmentation approaches are not yet able to address these issues, but rather have the potential to do so. In this paper, a novel automatic prostate MR image segmentation method based on the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering algorithm, which enables multispectral T1-weighted (T1w) and T2-weighted (T…

Deep Learning-Based Methods for Prostate Segmentation in Magnetic Resonance Imaging

2021

Magnetic Resonance Imaging-based prostate segmentation is an essential task for adaptive radiotherapy and for radiomics studies whose purpose is to identify associations between imaging features and patient outcomes. Because manual delineation is a time-consuming task, we present three deep-learning (DL) approaches, namely UNet, efficient neural network (ENet), and efficient residual factorized convNet (ERFNet), whose aim is to tackle the fully-automated, real-time, and 3D delineation process of the prostate gland on T2-weighted MRI. While UNet is used in many biomedical image delineation applications, ENet and ERFNet are mainly applied in self-driving cars to compensate for limited hardwar…

Robust Resolution-Enhanced Prostate Segmentation in Magnetic Resonance and Ultrasound Images through Convolutional Neural Networks

2021

[EN] Prostate segmentations are required for an ever-increasing number of medical applications, such as image-based lesion detection, fusion-guided biopsy and focal therapies. However, obtaining accurate segmentations is laborious, requires expertise and, even then, the inter-observer variability remains high. In this paper, a robust, accurate and generalizable model for Magnetic Resonance (MR) and three-dimensional (3D) Ultrasound (US) prostate image segmentation is proposed. It uses a densenet-resnet-based Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) combined with techniques such as deep supervision, checkpoint ensembling and Neural Resolution Enhancement. The MR prostate segmentation model was tra…
