Climate Change Effects on Agricultural Insect Pests in Europe

2015

Abstract In this chapter, we will discuss observations of climate change effects on agricultural pests in Europe, the possible mechanisms behind these observed effects and finally delve into more detail through some relatively well studied model species (the Colorado potato beetle and the rape beetle). Direct effects of climate change on agricultural pests in Europe are difficult to dissect from all the human-induced changes that have taken place in parallel with an increased mean annual temperature. During the past decade, agriculture has become more professionalized in terms of land use, crop cultivation techniques and pest management strategies. We review the effect of climate change on …

Does autoimmunity play a part in the pathogenesis of glaucoma?

2013

Glaucoma is a chronic neurodegenerative disease and one of the leading causes of blindness. Several risk factors have been described, e.g. an elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), oxidative stress or mitochondrial dysfunction. Additionally, alterations in serum antibody profiles of glaucoma patients, upregulation (e.g. anti-HSP60, anti-MBP) and downregulation (e.g. anti-14-3-3), have been described, but it still remains elusive if the autoantibodies seen in glaucoma are an epiphenomenon or causative. However, it is known that elicited autoimmunity causes retinal ganglion cell loss resulting in glaucomatous-like damage and according to the autoaggressive nature of some autoantibodies we found…

Neuroprotection and autoimmunity in glaucoma

2012

In glaucoma, the elevated intraocular pressure cannot explain the disease in all patients. However, the pathogenesis of the disease is widely unknown. Biomarker research could be help to understand the disease process. Beside some genetic and proteomic biomarkers, immunoproteomics could play a significant role. Several studies could provide hints for an involvement of autoantibodies in the pathogenesis of the disease. The complex profiles of natural occurring autoantibodies were analyzed by Western Blotting and mass spectrometry based techniques combined with multivariate statistics and artificial neural networks. In several studies we could demonstrate consistent up- and down-regulations o…

Current debates on online privacy are rooted in liberal theory. Accordingly, privacy is often regarded as a form of freedom from social, economic, and institutional influences. Such a negative perspective on privacy, however, focuses too much on how individuals can be protected or can protect themselves, instead of challenging the necessity of protection itself. In this article, I argue that increasing online privacy literacy not only empowers individuals to achieve (a necessarily limited) form of negative privacy, but has the potential to facilitate a privacy deliberation process in which individuals become agents of social change that could lead to conditions of positive privacy and infor…

COMPLIANCE PROGRAM IN LATVIAS’ BANKING SECTOR: THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY

2012

Regulators more than ever believe an efficient compliance function is a prerequisite for good corporate governance that should restore trust, integrity, and responsibility in the banks, findings in academic research has confirmed mentioned above in many countries. Compliance is key facet of governance because it shows how actually bank meets corporate responsibilities. The new guidelines in September 2011 had been issued by European Banking Authority with more attention to the compliance function. Compliance is very complex function and covers different areas: Anti-money laundering, investment protection, consumer protection, data protection and etc. Compliance complexity arises from severa…

On the de-energization of over-head low-voltage lines under high-impedance fault conditions

2018

Downed distribution conductors in overhead distribution systems, may not be a concern for equipment, but greatly challenge the safety of persons, as well as the integrity of properties. Upstream overcurrent protective devices may not be able to detect the magnitudes of fault currents resulting from these high-impedance faults. Even though protective devices capable to detect such faults have been available on the market, not all the utilities have equipped their stations with these products, likely due to the costs. In this paper, the authors formalize the problem, and propose a possible cost-effective solution for the low-voltage over-head lines with neutral wire. Such solution includes a …

Strategic Analysis of The Rural Area Development in the Central Region of Romania

2010

This paper aims at addressing issues of rural development in the Central Region for Development of Romania, in terms of preserving both the traditional aspect of Romania’s rural area and the modernization of rural life for the integration in the European Union. The premise and the importance of such a process are made up by the certainty that the development of rural area and of agriculture in Romania have to be consistent with the values and global beliefs on the environment, agriculture and the role of tradition.

New cerebral protection strategies.

2005

PURPOSE OF REVIEW This article presents an overview of the most recent and important strategies to reduce secondary brain damage. RECENT FINDING There is currently no magic bullet available to protect the brain after neuronal injury. This is related to the complex pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia, which makes it unlikely that a single pharmacological intervention results in sustained neuroprotection. Analyses of clinical studies reveal that acute physiologic derangements (e.g. fever, hypertension and hypotension, hypoxemia, hypercapnia, hyperglycemia) are the most important predictors of unfavorable outcome after brain injury and have to be treated. The effectiveness of anesthetic agent…
