Cytoprotective effects of the antioxidant phytochemical indicaxanthin in beta-thalassemia red blood cells

2006

Antioxidant phytochemicals are investigated as novel treatments for supportive therapy in beta-thalassemia. The dietary indicaxanthin was assessed for its protective effects on human beta-thalassemic RBCs submitted in vitro to oxidative haemolysis by cumene hydroperoxide. Indicaxanthin at 1.0-10 microM enhanced the resistance to haemolysis dose-dependently. In addition, it prevented lipid and haemoglobin (Hb) oxidation, and retarded vitamin E and GSH depletion. After ex vivo spiking of blood from thalassemia patients with indicaxanthin, the phytochemical was recovered in the soluble cell compartment of the RBCs. A spectrophotometric study showed that indicaxanthin can reduce perferryl-Hb ge…

Alternative Dispute Resolution Systems Across the European Union, Iceland and Norway

2014

Abstract Alternative dispute resolution schemes (ADR) have been developed differently across the EU. It is difficult to determine which of the countries have developed the most successful schemes. Therefore the aim of this article is to summarize different organizational aspects of ADR schemes across the EU, to determine similarities across different countries and to define them in specific systems. Defining these schemes in systems will not only help to evaluate and compare ADR schemes and their success between different countries but will help also professionals, governments and other stakeholders to develop more effective ADR schemes across the EU, Iceland and Norway.

Have tractor manufacturers bore in mind soil compaction over the last 40 years?

2019

Soil compaction is the compression of soil particles in a lower volume as a consequence of the reduction of the spaces existing among the particles themselves. This phenomenon is caused by natural forces and, above all, human ones. In order to estimate the field damages that can be caused by the traffic of agricultural machines, the load and the mean pressure applied by the tyres onto the soil can be measured. The research aim is to determine the pressure applied by each considered tractor onto the soil, in order to evaluate the effect of the traffic of tractors onto the soil itself. A total of 783 wheeled tractors manufactured and marketed in the last 35 years (1979-2014) was investigated.…

Beneficial effects of saffron (

2020

Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) has been traditionally used in food preparation and as a medicinal plant. It currently has numerous therapeutic properties attributed to it, such as protection against ischemia, as well as anticonvulsant, antidepressant, anxiolytic, hypolipidemic, anti-atherogenic, anti-hypertensive, antidiabetic, and anti-cancer properties. In addition, saffron has remarkable beneficial properties, such as anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, due to its main metabolites, among which crocin and crocetin stand out. Furthermore, increasing evidence underwrites the possible neuroprotective role of the main bioactive saffron constituents in neurodegenerative …

Geometrical and conformational preferences of the 9‐fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl‐amino moiety

2004

Structural parameters, originating from x-ray crystallographic data, have been compiled for 13 derivatives of amino acids, peptides and related compounds, which contain a total of 14 Fmoc-NH- moieties. For these moieties, molecular geometries and conformations--described by the omegao, theta1, theta2 and theta3' torsion angles--were analysed and compared with the corresponding parameters for the Z-NH- and Boc-NH-moieties (290 and 553, respectively). To gain a deeper insight into the conformational features of the Fmoc-NH- moiety, ab initio free molecule calculations were performed for fully relaxed minima. Also the potential energy surface as a function of the torsion angles (theta3', theta…

Developing and Validating a Behavioural Model of Cyberinsurance Adoption

2021

Business disruption from cyberattacks is a growing concern, yet cyberinsurance uptake remains low. Using an online behavioural economics experiment with 4800 participants across four EU countries, this study tests a predictive model of cyberinsurance adoption, incorporating elements of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) as well as factors in relation to risk propensity and price. During the experiment, participants were given the opportunity to purchase different cybersecurity measures and cyberinsurance products before performing an online task. Participants likelihood of suffering a cyberattack was dependent upon their adoption of cybersecurity me…

Preventing Execution of Unauthorized Native-Code Software

2017

The business world is exhibiting a growing dependency on computer systems, their operations and the databases they contain. Unfortunately, it also suffers from an ever growing recurrence of malicious software attacks. Malicious attack vectors are diverse and the computer-security industry is producing an abundance of behavioral-pattern detections to combat the phenomenon. This paper proposes an alternative approach, based on the implementation of an attested, and thus trusted, thin-hypervisor. Secondary level address translation tables, governed and fully controlled by the hypervisor, are configured in order to assure that only pre-whitelisted instructions can be executed in the system. INFORMATION EXCHANGE AND DATA PROTECTION IN SECURITY MATTERS. THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK IN THE EUROPEAN UNION AND IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE EU AND TH…

2012

The present paper deals with the international law and European Union law limits to the free flows of information for security reasons and for law enforcement reasons, deriving from both data protection and human rights legal instruments. Thus, the first step will be drawing up the international framework (if any) for data protection and data transfers. The EU framework will then be analyzed, taking into consideration the most relevant European data protection acts, and, subsequently, compared with data protection rules in the United States. Finally, given the absence of a comprehensive international framework, the bilateral conventional solutions will be considered. To this extent, the mos…

Emergenza sanitaria e trattamento dei dati personali

2020

The essay analyzes the emergency provisions againsts the COVID-19 pandemic that have an impact on citizens' personal data, verifying their compliance wit…
