Bergamot reduces plasma lipids, atherogenic small dense LDL, and subclinical atherosclerosis in subjects with moderate hypercholesterolemia: A 6 mont…

2016

Background: Some patients experience statin-induced side effects or prefer nutraceutical approaches for the treatment of dyslipidemia. This has led to a search for alternative therapeutic approaches for dyslipidemia management. In recent studies Citrus bergamia (known as Bergamot) juice was able to reduce serum levels of lipids. Such benefit may be attributed to high amounts of flavonoids contained in Bergamot fruit juice (neoeriocitrin, neohesperidin, naringin). The aim of the present study was to fully investigate the effects of a Bergamot extract on cardio-metabolic parameters, including plasma lipids, atherogenic lipoproteins and subclinical atherosclerosis. Methods: Eighty subjects (42…

Shortened Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time May Help in Diagnosing Hereditary and Acquired Angioedema

2016

Objective: To evaluate whether activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) could be used in the laboratory diagnosis of hereditary or acquired angioedema (HAE or AAE) with and without C1 inhibitor (C1-INH) deficiency. Methods: In a prospective investigation, APTT and other coagulation parameters were determined in 149 adult patients with various types of angioedema and in 26 healthy participants (HP). Results: Mean APTT was significantly shortened in HAE-C1-INH type I (p < 0.0001) and type II (p = 0.0017) and in AAE-C1-INH (p < 0.0001) compared to the HP. APTT was shorten…

Antioxidant Effect of a Probiotic Product on a Model of Oxidative Stress Induced by High-Intensity and Duration Physical Exercise

2021

This randomized double-blind and controlled single-center clinical trial was designed to evaluate the effect of a 6-week intake of a probiotic product (1 capsule/day) vs. a placebo on an oxidative stress model of physical exercise (high intensity and duration) in male cyclists (probiotic group, n = 22

Participation of Heme Oxygenase-1 in a Model of Acute Inflammation

2003

In this study, the role of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in the inflammatory response elicited by zymosan in the mouse air pouch model has been examined. This response is characterized by a time-dependent increase in HO-1 expression in the leukocytes migrating into the exudates. At 24–48 h maximal HO-1 expression was accompanied by reduced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and nitric oxide synthase-2 (NOS-2) expression as well as low levels of inflammatory mediators. Hemin administration into the air pouch caused an elevation of HO-1 protein and bilirubin levels induced by zymosan with inhibition of COX-2 expression. In mouse peritoneal macrophages from hemin-injected mice, we also observed an increased …

Influence of platelet-derived growth factor on osseous remodeling properties of a variable-thread tapered dental implant in vivo

2016

Objectives To evaluate the effect of platelet-derived growth factor (rhPDGF-BB) on the promotion of osteogenesis around variable-thread tapered implants in an animal model. Material and methods Twenty-four variable-thread tapered implants were inserted in the tibia of 12 rabbits. Twelve sites received additional rhPDGF-BB released from a presoaked xenogenic bone block that was fixed supracrestally. Primary outcomes were bone-to-implant contact (BIC; in % ± SD) and percentage of medullary bone fill around the implants (PMF; in % ± SD) after 3 weeks (PDGF n = 6, no PDGF n = 6) and 6 weeks (PDGF n = 6, no PDGF n = 6). Results Considerable crestal and medullary bone remodeling could be found ar…

Clinical Course and Genetic Susceptibility of Primary Biliary Cirrhosis: Analysis of a Prospective Cohort

2016

Background: Natural history of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is partially characterized in patients from the Mediterranean area whose genetic background differs from that of Northern Europeans. Objectives: We aimed to describe genetic susceptibility and clinical course of PBC in patients from Southern Italy. Methods: Socio-demographic, clinical, biochemical and histological data at diagnosis as well as disease progression of 81 PBC consecutive patients were collected. All subjects were treated with Ursodeoxycholic acid at a dose of 15 mg/kg. HLA class II DRB1 alleles were compared with those of 237 healthy control subjects. IL28B genotyping for IL28B rs12979860 C/T and rs80899917 G/T was …

Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection in patients with prosthetic joint included in the prospective VIRSTA cohort study: frequency and time of …

2019

International audience; Among 143 patients of the VIRSTA cohort study with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia and an arthroplasty implanted for more than a year, S. aureus periprosthetic joint infection was observed in 19%. Signs of infection (pain and swelling) were always present, in median 1 day (range, 0-21 days) after onset of bacteremia. Staphylococcus aureus has both a high potential for metastatic infection and a high affinity for foreign material. Possible prosthesis infection is of clinical concern in all patients with preexisting prosthetic materials experiencing S. aureus bloodstream infection (SAB). Prosthetic joints are especially prone to infection during the course of bacterem…

Association of statin use and clinical outcomes in heart failure patients : a systematic review and meta-analysis

2019

Abstract Background The role of statins in patients with heart failure (HF) of different levels of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) remains unclear especially in the light of the absence of prospective data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in non-ischemic HF, and taking into account potential statins’ prosarcopenic effects. We assessed the association of statin use with clinical outcomes in patients with HF. Methods We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Google Scholar and Cochrane Central until August 2018 for RCTs and prospective cohorts comparing clinical outcomes with statin vs non-statin use in patients with HF at different LVEF levels. We followed the guidelines of the 2…

Randomized controlled trial comparing embryo culture in two incubator systems: G185 K-System versus EmbryoScope

2017

Objective To study whether the closed culture system, as compared with a benchtop incubator with similar culture conditions, has a positive impact on intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) outcomes. Design Randomized controlled trial. Setting University hospital. Patient(s) A total of 386 patients undergoing ICSI cycles with at least six mature oocytes were randomized. Intervention(s) Of these patients, 195 were assigned to the group with culture in a time-lapse imaging (TLI) system (EmbryoScope) and 191 to the group with culture in the G185 K-System (G185). Main Outcome Measure(s) Rate of implantation (primary endpoint) and embryo morphology grade. Result(s) No significant differences wer…

“New Kids on the Block” — The Game Changers. The Role of Immune Check Point Blockade in Personalised Treatment of Prostate, Urinary Bladder and Kidne…

2021

Abstract Early detection and diagnosis of cancer followed by a personalised approach to treatment is a key and can save lives. It has been an important issue in both the medical and social fields. The search for instruments and/or diagnostics tools able to detect cancers at an early stage has led to consideration of the usage of various approaches, such as exhaled air, biomarkers in blood, urine testing as well as imaging techniques. This actual time and everything that is happening around us could be characterised as a strange and very unpredictable time. This comparison could be made not only due to the actual coronavirus situation, but also the same can be noticed in the personalised med…
