High pressure theoretical and experimental analysis of the bandgap of BaMoO4, PbMoO4, and CdMoO4

2019

We have investigated the origin of the bandgap of BaMoO4, PbMoO4, and CdMoO4 crystals on the basis of optical absorption spectroscopy experiments and ab initio electronic band structure, density of states, and electronic localization function calculations under high pressure. Our study provides an accurate determination of the bandgaps Eg and their pressure derivatives d E g / dP for BaMoO4 (4.43 eV, −4.4 meV/GPa), PbMoO4 (3.45 eV, −53.8 meV/GPa), and CdMoO4 (3.71 eV, −3.3 meV/GPa). The absorption edges were fitted with the Urbach exponential model which we demonstrate to be the most appropriate for thick crystals with direct bandgaps. So far, the narrowing of the bandgap of distinct PbMoO4…

Band gap of corundumlike α−Ga2O3 determined by absorption and ellipsometry

2017

The electronic structure near the band gap of the corundumlike $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ phase of ${\mathrm{Ga}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ has been investigated by means of optical absorption and spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements in the ultraviolet (UV) range (400--190 nm). The absorption coefficient in the UV region and the imaginary part of the dielectric function exhibit two prominent absorption thresholds with wide but well-defined structures at 5.6 and 6.3 eV which have been ascribed to allowed direct transitions from crystal-field split valence bands to the conduction band. Excitonic effects with large Gaussian broadening are taken into account through the Elliott-Toyozawa model, which y…

Determination of refractive index of submicron-thick films using resonance shift in a four-layer slab waveguide

2017

The measurement of refractive index of very thin films at the order of ten to hundred nanometers is cumbersome and usually requires employing sophisticated techniques such as the spectral ellipsometry. In this paper we describe a simple contact method for measuring the refractive index of thin films. Here we have used the prism-coupling technique for characterizing samples prepared as four-layer slab waveguides. The waveguide resonance condition can be calculated by solving simple analytic transcendental equations for the slab waveguide. Then the captured mode position as a function of cladding thickness is used for probing the refractive index of cladding layer. We used indium-tin-oxide la…

Electromagnetically induced switching of ferroelectric thin films

2007

We analyze the interaction of an electromagnetic spike (one cycle) with a thin layer of ferroelectric medium with two equilibrium states. The model is the set of Maxwell equations coupled to the undamped Landau-Khalatnikov equation, where we do not assume slowly varying envelopes. From linear-scattering theory, we show that low-amplitude pulses can be completely reflected by the medium. Large-amplitude pulses can switch the ferroelectric. Using numerical simulations and analysis, we study this switching for long and short pulses, estimate the switching times, and provide useful information for experiments.

Towards Open Domain Chatbots—A GRU Architecture for Data Driven Conversations

2018

Understanding of textual content, such as topic and intent recognition, is a critical part of chatbots, allowing the chatbot to provide relevant responses. Although successful in several narrow domains, the potential diversity of content in broader and more open domains renders traditional pattern recognition techniques inaccurate. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning architecture for content recognition that consists of multiple levels of gated recurrent units (GRUs). The architecture is designed to capture complex sentence structure at multiple levels of abstraction, seeking content recognition for very wide domains, through a distributed scalable representation of content. To …

Contrasting topologies for regular interconnection networks under the constraints of nanoscale silicon technology

2010

Nowadays, system designers have adopted Networks-on-Chip as communication infrastructure of general-purpose tile-based Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC). Such decision implies that a certain topology has to be selected to efficiently interconnect many cores on the chip. To ease such a choice, the networking literature offers a plethora of works about topology analysis and characterization for the off-chip domain. However, theoretical parameters and many intuitive assumptions of such off-chip networks do not necessarily hold when a topology is laid out on a 2D silicon surface. This is due to the distinctive features of silicon technology design pitfalls. This work is a first milestone t…

Structural, electronic and energetic effects in heterocyclic fluorene derivatives fused with a fulvene unit

2019

Abstract A set of 36 heterocyclic (B, N and O) fluorene (C) derivatives fused in nine ways with fulvene ring have been analyzed by means of different local aromaticity criteria. Molecular geometry of analyzed compounds were optimized at B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level of theory. The evaluation of the local aromaticity has been carried out through the use of the geometry-based harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) and the magnetism-based zz‐component of the nucleus independent chemical shifts calculated 1 A above the ring center (NICS1zz) indices as well as one aromaticity index derived from the Quantum Theory Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM), i.e. the para-delocalization index (PDI). Unveiling the Occurrence of Co(III) in NiCo Layered Electroactive Hydroxides: The Role of Distorted Environments

2020

Co- and Ni-based layered hydroxides constitute a unique class of two-dimensional inorganic materials with exceptional chemical diversity, physicochemical properties and outstanding performance as supercapacitors and overall water splitting catalysts. Recently, the occurrence of Co(III) in these phases has been proposed as a key factor that enhance their electrochemical performance. However, the origin of this centers and control over its contents remains as an open question. We employed the Epoxide Route to synthesize a whole set of α-NiCo layered hydroxides. The PXRD and XAS characterization alert about the occurrence of Co(III) as a consequence of the increment in the Ni content. DFT+U si…
