Mean curvature flow of graphs in warped products
2012
Let M be a complete Riemannian manifold which either is compact or has a pole, and let φ be a positive smooth function on M . In the warped product M ×φ R, we study the flow by the mean curvature of a locally Lipschitz continuous graph on M and prove that the flow exists for all time and that the evolving hypersurface is C∞ for t > 0 and is a graph for all t. Moreover, under certain conditions, the flow has a well defined limit.
Superior Fischer-Tropsch performance of uniform cobalt nanoparticles deposited into mesoporous SiC
2020
Electrochemically-derived well-crystalline mesoporous silicon carbide (pSiC) was used as a host for cobalt nanoparticles to demonstrate superior catalytic performance during the CO hydrogenation according to Fischer-Tropsch. Colloidal Co nanoparticles (9 ± 0.4 nm) were prepared independently using colloidal recipes before incorporating them into pSiC and, for comparison purposes, into commercially available silica (Davisil) as well as foam-like MCF-17 supports. The Co/pSiC catalyst demonstrated the highest (per unit mass) catalytic activity of 117 µmol.g(CO)-1.g-1(Co).s-1 at 220 °C which was larger by about one order of magnitude as compared to both silica supported cobalt catalysts. Furthe…
Testing two temporal upscaling schemes for the estimation of the time variability of the actual evapotranspiration
2015
Temporal availability of grapes actual evapotranspiration is an emerging issue since vineyards farms are more and more converted from rainfed to irrigated agricultural systems. The manuscript aims to verify the accuracy of the actual evapotranspiration retrieval coupling a single source energy balance approach and two different temporal upscaling schemes. The first scheme tests the temporal upscaling of the main input variables, namely the NDVI, albedo and LST; the second scheme tests the temporal upscaling of the energy balance output, the actual evapotranspiration. The temporal upscaling schemes were implemented on: i) airborne remote sensing data acquired monthly during a whole irrigatio…
Prions, mad cow disease, and preventive measures: a critical appraisal
2003
In 1996 the first key epidemiological study on bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE) appeared in the renowned journal Nature [1]. In that article it was estimated that by the year 1996, some 750,000 cows with BSE had entered the food chain in Great Britain. Accordingly, millions of people in GB must have consumed contaminated meat. That same year the first report on a new form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease [variant (v) CJD] manifesting in young patients appeared [26]. A connection between this disease and BSE was assumed. In view of the suspicion that the use of meat and bone meal (MBM) had led to the outbreak of BSE, feeding with MBM was banned in the year 1988. The number of new BSE infecti…
Architecture of cell differentiation, stress-mediated protein expression and transport in iPSC-derived Motor Neurons bearing a pG376D TDP-43 mutation
2020
BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE. ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by loss of motoneurons (MNs). Growingevidence suggests that the disease has a strong genetic basis. Up to now, more than 50 ALS-related genes have beenfound. Among these, TARDBP plays a critical role in ALS. Pathogenic mutations in TARDBP gene are found in 1–3% offamilial ALS cases. A few years ago, a novel G376D TARDBP mutation associated to ALS was reported (Conforti et al, 2011). Recently, a verylarge genealogic tree from this G376D family was made (2HE Association, personal communication) leading to a largecollection of DNA, plasma and fibroblasts (FBs) from several family members, both affected and not clinically…
On Generalizing Lipschitz Global Methods forMultiobjective Optimization
2015
Lipschitz global methods for single-objective optimization can represent the optimal solutions with desired accuracy. In this paper, we highlight some directions on how the Lipschitz global methods can be extended as faithfully as possible to multiobjective optimization problems. In particular, we present a multiobjective version of the Pijavskiǐ-Schubert algorithm.
Drug connectivity mapping and functional analysis reveal therapeutic small molecules that differentially modulate myelination
2022
Disruption or loss of oligodendrocytes (OLs) and myelin has devastating effects on CNS function and integrity, which occur in diverse neurological disorders, including Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s disease and neuropsychiatric disorders. Hence, there is a need to develop new therapies that promote oligodendrocyte regeneration and myelin repair. A promising approach is drug repurposing, but most agents have potentially contrasting biological actions depending on the cellular context and their dose-dependent effects on intracellular pathways. Here, we have used a combined systems biology and neurobiological approach to identify compounds that exert positive and negative effects on olig…

Novel approaches in diagnosis and therapy of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
2000
The scrapie prion protein, PrP(Sc), as well as its peptide fragment, PrP106-126, are toxic on neuronal cells, resulting in cell death by an apoptotic, rather than necrotic mechanism. The apoptotic process of neuronal cells induced by prion protein supports diagnosis and offers potential targets for therapeutic intervention of the prion diseases. Among the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins, which may serve as markers of neuronal cell death associated with prion diseases, the 14-3-3 protein(s) turned out to be the most promising one. A new sensitive assay allows the detection of even small changes in the normally low levels of these proteins. In vitro, the toxic effects displayed by PrP(Sc) …
Existence and uniqueness of nontrivial collocation solutions of implicitly linear homogeneous Volterra integral equations
2011
We analyze collocation methods for nonlinear homogeneous Volterra-Hammerstein integral equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity. We present different kinds of existence and uniqueness of nontrivial collocation solutions and we give conditions for such existence and uniqueness in some cases. Finally we illustrate these methods with an example of a collocation problem, and we give some examples of collocation problems that do not fit in the cases studied previously.
