What does augment the risk to use cannabis on an everyday-basis in psychotic patients?
2017
Introduction There are strong enough evidences of the fact that risk of psychosis is augmented by cannabis use. In a recent analysis, the strongest predictor of case-control status was daily-skunk use, i.e. the ORs for skunk users increase with the frequency of use5. We know also that FEP who smoked cannabis in their lifetime are less neuropsychologically impaired i.e. they have better premorbid and current IQ6. In this study we wanted to test what augments the probability to be everyday users, taking into account premorbid social and academic adjustment and cognition as predictors, along with age at first cannabis-use and % of THC in cannabis used. Methods The sample was made of 834 First …

FIRST EPISODE PSYCHOSIS PATIENTS WHO USED CANNABIS DEVELOP THEIR ILLNESS AT A SIGNIFICANTLY YOUNGER AGE THAN THOSE WHO NEVER USED CONSISTENTLY ACROSS…
2018
Background: Patients presenting to psychiatric services with their first episode of psychosis (FEP) report higher rates of previous cannabis use than the general population (Donoghue et al., 2011; Myles, Myles and Large, 2016). Evidence suggested that patients suffering from psychosis with a history of cannabis use have an earlier age of onset of psychosis (AOP) than those who never used it (Di Forti et al., 2013). We aim to investigate if the reported association between use of cannabis and AOP is consistent across different countries, once having taken into account different patterns of cannabis use (i.e. frequency of use and age at first use). Methods: We analysed data on patterns of lif…
Cannabis consumption and the risk of psychosis
2017
Summary Objectives: Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug globally and its use has been linked to an increased risk for psychotic disorders. An association between cannabis consumption and psychotic symptoms was consistently reported by several studies. This case-control study aimed to widen the current findings about the impact of cannabis exposure on the risk of psychosis, by investigating the pattern of cannabis consumption in a sample of first-episode of psychosis (FEP) patients compared to healthy controls. Material and methods: 68 individuals who presented for the first time to mental health services of Palermo (Italy) with an ICD-10 diagnosis of psychotic disorders and 74 hea…

La trasmissione del trauma:il caso dei sopravvissuti della Shoah
2011
The aim of this study is to analize how individual subjectivity is influenced and in part determined by psychic life of past generation and by belonging community or cultural groups. To particularly, we tried to unterstand how massive and non-sense traumas, like Shoah, may continue to act on following generations deeply marking them: descendants of survivors of this tragic event had, in fact, the task of finding a solutions to unresolved and unelaborated traumas of their parents and the Jewish people in general, so the second generation became the recipient of emotive real life that have structured the parent's experiences. Deep interviews have been conducted with some ex-deported and some …

The “Visiting in italy” project: origins, organisation and prospects
2017
Visiting has its theoretical roots in the research of Lewin, and began in England in the early 2000s when the Community of Communities network, led by Rex Haigh, introduced this project structured on both peer- and self-review for monitoring the quality of treatment settings (for adults, minors, prisoners, etc.) and earning accreditation and financing from the National Health Service. The Italian Visiting project, which Mito&Realtà designed, proposed and formally introduced in 2010, has the aim of encouraging communities to get to know each other through a process of assessing therapeutic and structural factors for the purpose of better identifying TCs’ weaknesses and strengths and encourag…
West syndrome followed by juvenile myoclonic epilepsy: a coincidental occurrence?
2012
West syndrome followed by juvenile myoclonic epilepsy: a coincidental occurrence? is an age-dependent epilepsy with onset peak in the first year of life. According to the ILAE classification, the etiology of WS could be symptomatic or cryptogenic. An idiopathic etiology was considered too. In literature, there was never previously described a transition from WS to JME. Methods: The proband, (male) was referred to our Department at the age of 8 months because he showed clusters of symmetric spasms. Interictal EEG recording displayed an hypsarrhythmic pattern. The clinical and EEG data suggested WS diagnosis. At 1 year of age increasing long and thick hair in both elbow regions was observed. …
