Thompson Sampling for Dynamic Multi-armed Bandits

2011

The importance of multi-armed bandit (MAB) problems is on the rise due to their recent application in a large variety of areas such as online advertising, news article selection, wireless networks, and medicinal trials, to name a few. The most common assumption made when solving such MAB problems is that the unknown reward probability theta k of each bandit arm k is fixed. However, this assumption rarely holds in practice simply because real-life problems often involve underlying processes that are dynamically evolving. In this paper, we model problems where reward probabilities theta k are drifting, and introduce a new method called Dynamic Thompson Sampling (DTS) that facilitates Order St…

Oligo(phenylenevinylene)s with reactive side chains: amine- and amide-bound alkoxysilanes

2002

Strongly luminescent oligo(phenylenevinylene) chromophores with monodisperse chain lengths are connected via short spacers containing a secondary amine or amide with di- and tri-ethoxysilane groups. The alkoxysilanes can be hydrolysed and condensed to cyclic and linear oligomers with high film forming capability and are also interesting functional units for hybrid materials for electro-optical applications. The luminescence properties in the solid state are influenced by hydrogen bonding of the amides resulting in strong hypsochromic shifts. The synthesis of the title compounds, their oligomerisation and the electronic spectra in the solution and solid state are presented.

Enhanced Reflectivity Change and Phase Shift of Polarized Light: Double Parameter Multilayer Sensor

2022

Herein, the concept of point of darkness based on polarized light phase difference and absorption of light is demonstrated by simulations using low refractive index and extinction coefficient semiconductor and dielectric, and high refractive index nonoxidizing metal multilayer thin film structures. Several multilayer sensor configurations show great sensitivity to thickness and refractive index variation of the detectable material by measuring the reflectivity ratio {\Psi} and phase shift {\Delta}. Focus is on such multilayers, which have sensitivity to both parameters ({\Psi}, {\Delta}) in the visible spectral range, thus opening the possibility for further research on a new biomedical sen…

Out of sight : Profiling soil characteristics, nutrients and bacterial communities affected by organic amendments down to one meter in a long-term ma…

2019

Common soil characteristics, nutrients and microbial activity at deeper soil depths are topics seldom covered in agricultural studies. Biogeochemical cycles in deep soils are not yet fully understood. This study investigates the effect of different mineral and organic fertilisation on soil organic matter dynamics, nutrients and bacterial community composition in the first meter of the soil profiles in the long-term maize cropping system experiment Tetto Frati, near the Po River in northern Italy. The following treatments have been applied since 1992: 1) crop residue removal (CRR), 2) crop residue incorporation (CRI), 3) crop residue removal with bovine slurry fertilisation (SLU), 4) crop re…

The carbon count of 2000 years of rice cultivation.

2013

More than 50% of the world's population feeds on rice. Soils used for rice production are mostly managed under submerged conditions (paddy soils). This management, which favors carbon sequestration, potentially decouples surface from subsurface carbon cycling. The objective of this study was to elucidate the long-term rates of carbon accrual in surface and subsurface soil horizons relative to those of soils under nonpaddy management. We assessed changes in total soil organic as well as of inorganic carbon stocks along a 2000-year chronosequence of soils under paddy and adjacent nonpaddy management in the Yangtze delta, China. The initial organic carbon accumulation phase lasts much longer a…

Characterization of ellipsoids through an overdetermined boundary value problem of Monge–Ampère type

2014

Abstract The study of the optimal constant in an Hessian-type Sobolev inequality leads to a fully nonlinear boundary value problem, overdetermined with non-standard boundary conditions. We show that all the solutions have ellipsoidal symmetry. In the proof we use the maximum principle applied to a suitable auxiliary function in conjunction with an entropy estimate from affine curvature flow.

Quantitative analysis of opsonophagocytosis and of killing of Candida albicans by human peripheral blood leukocytes by using flow cytometry

1991

We describe a simple, rapid, automated procedure for measuring opsonophagocytosis and killing of Candida albicans by human peripheral blood leukocytes. Yeast cells are labelled by allowing uptake and cleavage of membrane-permeable bis-carboxyethyl-carboxyfluorescein pentaacetoxymethylester to its membrane-impermeable fluorescent derivative bis-carboxyethyl-carboxyfluorescein. The yeast cells are added to cell-rich plasma obtained after dextran sedimentation of erythrocytes. Opsonophagocytosis and killing are quantified by using automated fluorescent cell analysis, and the following parameters can be obtained: (i) relative percentage of phagocytes that participate in opsonophagocytosis, (ii)…

Fluorine adsorption by volcanic soils at Mt. Etna, Italy

2012

Abstract Fluorine adsorption experiments were performed on 28 samples of the first 5 cm of topsoil collected on the flanks of Mt. Etna. The soil samples were equilibrated with F-rich rainwater (3.25 mg/L) at a soil/water weight ratio of 1/25. Aliquots of the supernatant were collected after 1, 7, 72, 720 and 5640 h and analysed for F content. The soil samples could be subdivided into three groups based on their F-adsorption behaviours after 1 h and at the end of the experiment: (1) negative adsorption (F released from the soil to the solution) after 1 h and negative or moderately positive adsorption at the end, (2) from negative after 1 h to strongly positive adsorption at the end, and (3) …

Comparison of DNase, DNA-polymerase and RNA-polymerase activities present in the DNA-bindung proteins of normal human dermis, epidermis, horny layer …

1978

DNA-binding proteins (DBP) of normal human dermis, epidermis, horny layer and psoriatic scales represent a tissue-specific group of mostly nuclear nonhistone proteins. To analyse their function, the different DBP fractions were examined concerning the presence of DNase, DNA-polymerase and RNA-polymerase activities. DBP of normal epidermis and horny layer contain four different DNases. One DNase of both DBP fractions is active only at pH 5.0. Three DNases of epidermal DBP are active at a pH-range from 5.0--8.5, while the corresponding DNases of horny layer-DBP are most active at pH 7.4. Probably these DNases have changed their pH-optimum during keratinisation. DBP of psoriatic scales include…
