A spiking network for spatial memory formation: Towards a fly-inspired ellipsoid body model
2013
Neural centers devoted to spatial memory and path integration were largely studied in rats and in different insect species like ants and bees. In this paper a neural-based model for the formation of a spatial working memory is proposed mirroring some peculiarities of the Drosophila central brain and in particular the ellipsoid body. Simulation results are reported opening the way to applications on roving platforms.
Psoriatic arthritis and COVID ‐19 pandemic: Consequences in medical treatment?
2020
The COVID‐19 pandemic has a strong negative impact on human society world‐wide. Patients with immune‐mediated disease may be prone to an increased risk of infection and/ or more severe course. We review the available data for patients with psoriatic arthritis (PSA) and systemic treatments. Current treatment options are summarized. Based upon the experience with COVID‐19 the following problems are addressed: (a) Can systemic treatment reduce comorbidities of PsA that are also comorbidities for COVID‐19? Does systemic medical treatment pose an increased risk of infection with SARS‐CoV‐2? Does systemic drug therapy have an impact on the risk of pulmonary fibrosis ‐ a factor with strong negativ…
Magnetic Langmuir-Blodgett films of ferritin with different iron contents.
2006
Magnetic Langmuir-Blodgett films of four ferritin derivatives with different iron contents containing 4220, 3062, 2200, and 1200 iron atoms, respectively, have been prepared by using the adsorption properties of a 6/1 mixed monolayer of methyl stearate (SME) and dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODA). The molecular organization of the mixed SME/DODA monolayer is strongly affected by the presence of the water-soluble protein in the subphase as shown by pi-A isotherms, BAM images, and imaging ellipsometry at the water-air interface. BAM images reveal the heterogeneity of this mixed monolayer at the air-water interface. We propose that the ferritin is located under the mixed matrix in thos…
Properties of Design-Based Functional Principal Components Analysis.
2010
This work aims at performing Functional Principal Components Analysis (FPCA) with Horvitz-Thompson estimators when the observations are curves collected with survey sampling techniques. One important motivation for this study is that FPCA is a dimension reduction tool which is the first step to develop model assisted approaches that can take auxiliary information into account. FPCA relies on the estimation of the eigenelements of the covariance operator which can be seen as nonlinear functionals. Adapting to our functional context the linearization technique based on the influence function developed by Deville (1999), we prove that these estimators are asymptotically design unbiased and con…
Minimax estimation with additional linear restrictions - a simulation study
1988
Let the parameter vector of the ordinary regression model be constrained by linear equations and in addition known to lie in a given ellipsoid. Provided the weight matrix A of the risk function has rank one, a restricted minimax estimator exists which combines both types of prior information. For general n.n.d. A two estimators as alternatives to the unfeasible exact minimax estimator are developed by minimizing an upper and a lower bound of the maximal risk instead. The simulation study compares the proposed estimators with competing least-squares estimators where remaining unknown parameters are replaced by suitable estimates.
Uniform convergence and asymptotic confidence bands for model-assisted estimators of the mean of sampled functional data
2013
When the study variable is functional and storage capacities are limited or transmission costs are high, selecting with survey sampling techniques a small fraction of the observations is an interesting alternative to signal compression techniques, particularly when the goal is the estimation of simple quantities such as means or totals. We extend, in this functional framework, model-assisted estimators with linear regression models that can take account of auxiliary variables whose totals over the population are known. We first show, under weak hypotheses on the sampling design and the regularity of the trajectories, that the estimator of the mean function as well as its variance estimator …
Design-based estimation for geometric quantiles with application to outlier detection
2010
Geometric quantiles are investigated using data collected from a complex survey. Geometric quantiles are an extension of univariate quantiles in a multivariate set-up that uses the geometry of multivariate data clouds. A very important application of geometric quantiles is the detection of outliers in multivariate data by means of quantile contours. A design-based estimator of geometric quantiles is constructed and used to compute quantile contours in order to detect outliers in both multivariate data and survey sampling set-ups. An algorithm for computing geometric quantile estimates is also developed. Under broad assumptions, the asymptotic variance of the quantile estimator is derived an…
Using Complex Surveys to Estimate theL1-Median of a Functional Variable: Application to Electricity Load Curves
2012
Mean proles are widely used as indicators of the electricity consumption habits of customers. Currently, Electricit e De France (EDF), estimates class load proles by using point-wise mean function. Unfortunately, it is well known that the mean is highly sensitive to the presence of outliers, such as one or more consumers with unusually high-levels of consumption. In this paper, we propose an alternative to the mean prole: the L1-median prole which is more robust. When dealing with large datasets of functional data (load curves for example), survey sampling approaches are useful for estimating the median prole and avoid storing all of the data. We propose here estimators of the median trajec…
G1-Blend between a Differentiable Superquadric of Revolution and a Plane or a Sphere Using Dupin Cyclides
2008
In this article, we present a method to perform G1-continuous blends between a differentiable superquadric of revolution and a plane or a sphere using Dupin cyclides. These blends are patches delimited by four lines of curvature. They allow to avoid parameterization problems that may occur when parametric surfaces are used. Rational quadratic Bezier curves are used to approximate the principal circles of the Dupin cyclide blends and thus a complex 3D problem is now reduced to a simpler 2D problem. We present the necessary conditions to be satisfied to create the blending patches and illustrate our approach by a number of superellipsoid/plane and superellipsoid/sphere blending examples.
