Global distributions of diazotrophs nitrogen fixation rates - Depth integrated values computed from a collection of source datasets - Contribution to…
2013
The MAREDAT atlas covers 11 types of plankton, ranging in size from bacteria to jellyfish. Together, these plankton groups determine the health and productivity of the global ocean and play a vital role in the global carbon cycle. Working within a uniform and consistent spatial and depth grid (map) of the global ocean, the researchers compiled thousands and tens of thousands of data points to identify regions of plankton abundance and scarcity as well as areas of data abundance and scarcity. At many of the grid points, the MAREDAT team accomplished the difficult conversion from abundance (numbers of organisms) to biomass (carbon mass of organisms). The MAREDAT atlas provides an unprecedente…
Journalist–source relations and the deliberative system: A network performance approach to investigating journalism’s contribution to facilitating pu…
2018
Journalist–source relationships and interactions are interpreted in this study as crucial mechanisms for linking different arenas in a deliberative system. To unravel these source networks, 106 semi-standardized interviews with journalists as well as public relations (PR) professionals from government delegations and non-governmental organizations were conducted on-site three United Nations (UN) climate change conferences between 2010 and 2013, and an online survey was administered during the conference in 2015. The analysis shows that most journalists maintain close relationships with their home country delegation. However, journalists experienced in climate conference coverage also maint…

Depth Enhancement by Fusion for Passive and Active Sensing
2012
This paper presents a general refinement procedure that enhances any given depth map obtained by passive or active sensing. Given a depth map, either estimated by triangulation methods or directly provided by the sensing system, and its corresponding 2-D image, we correct the depth values by separately treating regions with undesired effects such as empty holes, texture copying or edge blurring due to homogeneous regions, occlusions, and shadowing. In this work, we use recent depth enhancement filters intended for Time-of-Flight cameras, and adapt them to alternative depth sensing modalities, both active using an RGB-D camera and passive using a dense stereo camera. To that end, we propose …
Thermoplastic Properties of Endodontic Gutta-percha: A Thermographic In Vitro Study
2014
Abstract Introduction Endodontic gutta-percha undergoes deformation at temperatures above 65°C. The temperature influence of heat carriers on gutta-percha cones was investigated in vitro. Methods Six single-rooted extracted teeth were embedded in resin and fixed. The root canals were prepared (ProFile; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaiques, Switzerland) to different tapers and bisected. Thermographic images when heating the gutta-percha cones (Roeko, Langenau, Germany) with a heat carrier (ML .12; SybronEndo, Orange, CA) at 1 and 5 mm from the working length were made with an infrared thermal imaging camera (ThermaCam P640; Flir Systems, Taby, Sweden). The device temperature was preset at 200°C. T…
The Humanization of Health Care: In-Depth Knowledge Regarding the Ethics of Dental Care in Oncological Patients
2023
This chapter provides an illuminating insight into the processes of the humanization of care in order to increase specialist knowledge regarding the nature of the doctor-patient relationship. It will deal with the notion of care and its various aspects, including the existential dimension of the process of caregiving by means of a narrative (storytelling) interview. After a brief analysis of the changes which have affected medical science in past centuries, the focus of the paper will be directed to the remarkable transformation which clinical practice has undergone, by virtue of which the concept of the taking care of the patient has gained increasing attention. Thus, care can be provided …
An Italian survey of pitches for soccer
2004
On soccer grounds, grass cover is often reduced and the ground surface becomes uneven. Therefore, in order to assess the effects of climatic conditions, construction types and maintenance of the Italian soccer pitches, a detailed study was carried out. During 2000-2001, 61 soccer grounds were analysed, from continental to Mediterranean environments. First and second division Italian League grounds were about 30%, 40% were semi-professional and 30% were public grounds. Several parameters such as overseeding, fertilization, aeration, weed control, mowing and irrigation were collected in winter and at the end of the playing season, in order to evaluate soil profiles, grass mixtures and composi…
Distribution of soil organic carbon in Wadi Al-Thulaima, Saudi Arabia: A hyper-arid habitat altered by wastewater reuse
2018
The carbon cycle is being altered as a result of human-induced changes in the Earth's system. Therefore, ecosystems such as wetlands, authentic CO2 sinks, are becoming especially important. Little information exits on the soil organic carbon (SOC) stock for the middle east-countries man-made wetlands making wadis permanent with the outflow of wastewater treatment plants. This paper presents the vertical distribution of SOC content, soil bulk density (SBD) and SOC density in soil of vegetated and bare sites in Wadi Al-Thulaima, one of the artificial wetlands in central Saudi Arabia. The mean distribution of SBD in the vegetated and bare sites increased significantly with depth. Inversely, th…
Mechanical Characterization of Polymers on a Nanometer Scale through Nanoindentation. A Study on Pile-up and Viscoelasticity
2007
The analysis of nanoindentation force curves collected on polymers through the common Oliver and Pharr procedure does not lead to a correct evaluation of Young’s modulus. In particular, the estimated elastic modulus is several times larger than the correct one, thus compromising the possibility of a nanomechanical characterization of polymers. Pile-up or viscoelasticity is usually blamed for this failure, and a deep analysis of their influences is attempted in this work. Piling-up can be minimized by indenting on a true nanometer scale, i.e., at penetration depth smaller than 200 nm. On the other side, it is common knowledge that fast indentations minimize the effect of viscoelasticity. How…
