Pulmonary hypertension caused by a severe scoliosis

1996

Background. Pulmonary hypertension in childhood is uncommon. It can be idiopathic or secondary to other pathologies (cardiovascular, skeletric,...). Case description. We report on a 9 year old girl suffering from pulmonary hypertension due to severe dorso-lumbar scoliosis. Conclusions. We discuss the etiopathogenetic relationship between scoliosis and pulmonary hypertension, with particular reference to the role of the treatment with Milwaukee's corset in the evolution of the disease.

Stellenwert der Spirometertriggerung für die hochauflösende Computertomographie der Lunge in Inspiration und Exspiration

1998

PURPOSE To compare mean lung density (MLD) of paired inspiratory and expiratory thin-section CT scans acquired after patient instruction or using spirometric gating. MATERIALS AND METHODS 21 patients (13 m, 8 f. median age 59 years, two with normal lung function, 15 with obstructive, 4 with restrictive impairment) underwent thin-section CT. Paired inspiratory and expiratory scans were performed in the upper, middle and lower lung fields. They were acquired after automatic patient instruction with constant intervals between instruction and scan. Spirometrically gated scans were acquired within 4 days at 80% and 20% of vital capacity (VC) which has been determined on the CT scanner in supine …

New tailor-made bio-organoclays for the remediation of olive mill waste water

2013

A systematic study aimed at obtaining new organoclays for the treatment of Olive Mill Waste water (OMW) has been performed. Several organoclays have been prepared by loading different amounts of the biocompatible surfactant Tween20 onto the K10 montmorillonite (MMT). Complementary kinetic and equilibrium studies on the adsorption of the Tween20 onto the MMT have been carried out and the characterization of the new tailor-made bio-materials has been performed by means of the XRD and FT-IR measurements. Finally the prepared bio-organoclays have been successfully applied for the OMW remediation and they proved to be highly effective in decreasing the organic content (OC) to an extent that depe…

Portopulmonary hypertension.

2011

Portopulmonary hypertension (PPHT) is a respiratory complication of portal hypertension, defined as an increase in mean pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) of > 25 mmHg with an increase in pulmonary vascular resistance of > 240 dyn.s/cm-5 and a normal pulmonary capillary wedge pressure ( < 15 mmHg), which often occurs in subjects with liver cirrhosis. Histopathological features of PPHT are endothelial and smooth-muscle cell proliferation and fibrosis leading to luminal obstruction in the resistance arteries. The pathogenesis of PPHT may result from an imbalance between vasoconstrictor and vasodilating factors. The most common pulmonary symptom is exertional dyspnea; fatigue, chest pain…

Use of ICS in COPD: From Blockbuster Medicine to Precision Medicine

2017

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of mortality worldwide, whose burden is expected to increase in the next decades, because of numerous risk factors, including the aging of the population. COPD is both preventable and treatable by an effective management including risk factor reduction, prevention, assessment, and treatment of acute exacerbations and co-morbidities. The available agents approved for COPD treatment are long-acting or ultra-long-acting β2-agonists (LABAs) and long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) bronchodilators, as well as inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in combination with LABAs. ICS use has been restricted only to selected COPD patients by th…

Fatal Pulmonary Hemorrhage Through Fiberoptic Broncoscopy in a Well Controlled Diabetic Female With Mucormycosis

2008

A rare case of invasive pulmonary mucormycosis complicated by fatal massive haemoptysis through bronchoscopy in a patient with a well controlled diabetes is reported. Histological features of infection are reported and the characteristic aspects of the staining are discussed. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed bilateral obstruction of the segmental bronchi and fatal massive bleeding occurring because of biopsy sampling. Caution is warranted in the use of bronchoscopy sampling in patients with radiological features of cavitated lesions of fungal origins. Better preventive and early therapeutic antifungal treatments are needed to avoid this serious complication.

Beliefs and preferences regarding biological treatments for severe asthma

2020

Background: Severe asthma is a serious condition with a significant burden on patients' morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. Some biological therapies targeting the IgE and interleukin-5 (IL5) mediated pathways are now available. Due to the lack of direct comparison studies, the choice of which medication to use varies. We aimed to explore the beliefs and practices in the use of biological therapies in severe asthma, hypothesizing that differences will occur depending on the prescribers’ specialty and experience. Methods: We conducted an online survey composed of 35 questions in English. The survey was circulated via the INterasma Scientific Network (INESNET) platform as well as throu…

Characteristics and treatment regimens across ERS SHARP severe asthma registries

2020

Little is known about the characteristics and treatments of patients with severe asthma across Europe, but both are likely to vary. This is the first study in the European Respiratory Society Severe Heterogeneous Asthma Research collaboration, Patient-centred (SHARP) Clinical Research Collaboration and it is designed to explore these variations. Therefore, we aimed to compare characteristics of patients in European severe asthma registries and treatments before starting biologicals. This was a cross-sectional retrospective analysis of aggregated data from 11 national severe asthma registries that joined SHARP with established patient databases.Analysis of data from 3236 patients showed many …
