Abstract This work discusses the influence of the aggregate granulometry and the binder/aggregate ratio on the engineering properties of novel green geopolymeric mortars. Two wastes generated by a Portuguese Kraft pulp industry are employed to manufacture the material: lime slaker grits (used as aggregate) and biomass fly ash (to partially replace the metakaolin − 70 wt% substitution). The novel geopolymeric mortars could find innovative applications as sustainable construction materials. A Concentric CSR Roadmap Model for Host Community Relations in the Global South

The purpose of this article is to find new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) approaches for corporate-community relationships in the global South and hence to achieve some distance from the Northern ethos. The article is based on a case study from the Brazilian pulp and paper sector. Veracel Celulose, a multinational corporation, is a joint venture between the Brazilian Fibria Celulose (formerly Aracruz Celulose) and the Swedish-Finnish Stora Enso. First, Veracel’s production impacts on the Indigenous community, the Pataxó Indians, are examined. Implementation of a global P-recovery system in urban wastewater treatment plants

In particular, urban WWTPs are crucial systems to enhance phosphorus (P) recycling. Comparison of laboratory-scale thermophilic biofilm and activated sludge processes integrated with a mesophilic activated sludge process

A combined thermophilic-mesophilic wastewater treatment was studied using a laboratory-scale thermophilic activated sludge process (ASP) followed by mesophilic ASP or a thermophilic suspended carrier biofilm process (SCBP) followed by mesophilic ASP, both systems treating diluted molasses (dilution factor 1:500 corresponding GF/A-filtered COD (COD(filt)) of 1900+/-190 mgl(-1)). With hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 12-18 h the thermophilic ASP and thermophilic SCBP removed 60+/-13% and 62+/-7% of COD(filt), respectively, with HRT of 8 h the removals were 48+/-1% and 69+/-4%. Filtration of Nordic recirculating aquaculture system wastewater: Effects on microalgal growth, nutrient removal, and nutritional value

Abstract Microalgal bioremediation of recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) wastewater represents an alternative for wastewater treatment with the potential to generate valuable biomass. This study evaluated the effects of removing biological contamination and suspended solids from Nordic area RAS wastewater through filtration with 0.45 μm filters on the performance and nutritional value of microalgae. All three tested green microalgae (Haematococcus pluvialis, Monoraphidium griffithii, and Selenastrum sp.) were able to grow in raw (unfiltered) and filtered RAS wastewater. Sewage Sludge Derived Materials for CO2 Adsorption

The study tried to contribute to solving two serious environmental issues: CO2 reducing and sewage sludge disposal. Thus, sewage-sludge-derived materials were obtained in order to be evaluated for CO2 adsorption capacity. Therefore, the char resulted after the sewage sludge pyrolysis was subjected to oxidation and chemical activation processes by using different quantities of alkaline hydroxide. Experimental Evaluation of a New Thermal Process for Microorganisms Inactivation

A new thermal process for the inactivation of microorganisms in beverages has been studied and is presented in this paper. The treatment, not yet studied in the scientific literature, mainly consists of a thermal shock characterized by temperature increases up to 30°C/s, with final temperatures up to 65°C.
