Initial indicator analysis of bioethylen production pathways
2018
Abstract Circular economy and bioeconomy factors has driven the economy sectors towards sustainable choices. Chemical industry, as stated by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, has a potential to reduce 36 % of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 [1] mainly linked with introduction of emerging energy technologies. Ethylene, chlorine, ammonia and hydrogen are important chemicals for such reduction as they are the most worldwide produced chemicals (16 % of the total production in 2050 for ethylene, 11 % for chlorine and 6 % for ammonia). Meanwhile planned GHG reduction potential for these chemicals, through introduction of compression and separation technologies, is e…
Liquid co-substrates repower sewage microbiomes
2018
AbstractA range of parameters are known to shape the methanogenic communities of biogas-producing digesters and to strongly influence the amount of biogas produced. In this work, liquid and solid fractions of grass biomass were used separately for semicontinuous batch methanation using sewage sludge as seed sludge. During 6 months of incubation, the amount of input COD was increased gradually, and the underlying methanogenic microbiome was assessed by means of microscopy-based automated cell counting and full-length 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. In this sense, we prove for the first time the suitability of the ONT™MinION platform as a monitoring tool for anaerobic digestion systems. …
Antibacterial activity of different root canal sealers against Enterococcus faecalis
2017
Background The aim of the present study was to compare in vitro the antimicrobial activity of different root canal sealers against Enterococcus faecalis, prior and subsequent to setting. Material and methods Agar diffusion test (ADT) was used for evaluating the antibacterial activity of non-set sealer while the direct contact test (DCT) was used for after setting. Results ADT: Except for TotalFill BC Sealer all the others sealers tested showed antibacterial activity. BioRoot™RCS, MTA Fillapex and Sealapex Root Canal Sealer showed the lowest antibacterial activity, a significant increase in antibacterial effect for both Pulp Canal Sealer™ and AH plus sealers were found. Significantly higher …

2020
The scope of the Progress in Paper Physics Seminar is to discuss the broad scope of physical properties of paper, paperboard and new cellulose containing materialas. The program contain presentations reporting on the latest experimental, theoretical and computational developments. The three invited plenary speakers aim at bringing industry and academia together for in-depth discussions on selected topics in paper physics the potential impact on industry. The selected 37 oral presentations and 12 poster presentations provide opportunity to improve scientific knowledge and explore the latest outcomes and trends in the field. nonPeerReviewed
Performance of the dentogingival junction with mta and biodentine on the treatment of invasive cervical resorptions. A literature review and case rep…
2021
Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is an uncommon phenomenon (0.1%), however, it represents a challenge to the structural and functional integrity of the dentogingival junction, as well as a risk for the survival of the affected tooth. They are characterized by their location and invasive character, being able to appear in any tooth of the permanent dentition. It shows up after the damage to the cervical insertion apparatus, leaving the pulp without participation in the origin of the lesion. They may appear just below the junctional epithelium or at a more apical level. The MTA® (Dentsply, Tulsa dental, Tulsa OK) and the Biodentine® (Septodent, Saint Maur of Fossés, France) are two biomater…
Occupational hygiene in a Finnish drum composting plant
2005
Bioaerosols (microbes, dust and endotoxins) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were determined in the working air of a drum composting plant treating source-separated catering waste. Different composting activities at the Oulu drum composting plant take place in their own units separated by modular design and constructions. Important implication of this is that the control room is a relatively clean working environment and the risk of exposure to harmful factors is low. However, the number of viable airborne microbes was high both in the biowaste receiving hall and in the drum composting hall. The concentration (geometric average) of total microbes was 21.8 million pcs/m3 in the biowaste…
Microbial Fuel Cell with Ni–Co Cathode Powered with Yeast Wastewater
2018
Wastewater originating from the yeast industry is characterized by high concentration of pollutants that need to be reduced before the sludge can be applied, for instance, for fertilization of croplands. As a result of the special requirements associated with the characteristics of this production, huge amounts of wastewater are generated. A microbial fuel cell (MFC) forms a device that can apply wastewater as a fuel. MFC is capable of performing two functions at the same time: wastewater treatment and electricity production. The function of MFC is the production of electricity during bacterial digestion (wastewater treatment). This paper analyzes the possibility of applying yeast wastewate…
Correlation of wood-based components and dewatering properties of waste activated sludge from pulp and paper industry.
2010
Large amounts of wet sludge are produced annually in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. Already in pulp and paper industry, more than ten million tons of primary sludge, waste activated sludge, and de-inking sludge is generated. Waste activated sludge contains large quantities of bound water, which is difficult to dewater. Low water content would be a matter of high calorific value in incineration but it also has effects on the volume and the quality of the matter to be handled in sludge disposal. In this research waste activated sludges from different pulp and paper mills were chemically characterised and dewatered. Correlations of chemical composition and dewatering properties…
RAVITA Technology : new innovation for combined phosphorus and nitrogen recovery
2018
Abstract Present phosphorus (P) recovery technologies mainly contain P recovery from sludge liquor or ash. These types of technologies are suitable for large wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR), digestion and/or incineration. In Finland and other Nordic countries, strict P discharge limits require chemical precipitation, thus EBPR alone is not sufficient. Ammonium recovery from wastewater, on the other hand, is not so often discussed. However, recovery from WWTP reject waters would decrease the energy demand of ammonium synthesis by Haber-Bosh technology and the energy demand of the WWTP's biological process. Helsinki Region Environmental S…
Electro-conversion as sustainable method for the fine chemical production from the biopolymer lignin
2018
Lignin, one of the most abundant polymers in nature, qualifies itself by the polyphenolic structure as potential renewable feedstock for the production of bio-based aromatic fine chemicals. However, the natural complexity and degradation stability of lignin make the depolymerization a highly challenging task. Several efforts have been pursued for the selective degradation of the biopolymer into suitable compounds. However, there are only a few technical approaches for the degradation of lignin to aromatic fine chemicals. Organic electrosynthesis is the synthetic method that enables the direct use of electricity for the production of valuable compounds. Moreover, electro-organic synthesis re…
