Surface relief grating recording in azo polymer films
2013
In this work holographic recording of surface relief grating in organic Poly(Disperse Red 1 – methacrylate) thin films was studied. In this compound azo dye is chemically bonded to monomers making mass transport very efficient in the presence of optical field gradient. Sample preparation was performed using different solvents and coating methods. In the obtained samples holographic recording was performed by solid-state diode pump laser with 532 nm wavelength. Polarization grating and surface relief grating formation was studied by diode laser with 660 nm wavelength. Diffraction efficiency's dependence on read-out laser beam polarization state was investigated. The depth of surface relief g…
Large enhancement of spin pumping due to the surface bound states in normal metal/superconductor structures
2020
We show that the spin pumping from ferromagnetic insulator into the adjacent metallic spin sink can be strongly stimulated by the superconducting correlations. The key physical mechanism responsible for this effect is the presence of Andreev bound states at the ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor interface. We consider the minimal model when these states appear because of the suppressed pairing constant within the interfacial normal layer. For thin normal layers we obtain a strongly peaked temperature dependence of the Gilbert damping coefficient which has been recently observed in such systems. For thicker normal layers the Gilbert damping monotonically increases down to the temperature…
Stochastic Approach for Optimal Positioning of Pumps As Turbines (PATs)
2021
A generic water system consists of a series of works that allow the collection, conveyance, storage and finally the distribution of water in quantities and qualities such as to satisfy the needs of end users. In places characterized by high altitude differences between the intake works and inhabited centres, the potential energy of the water is very high. This energy is attributable to high pressures, which could compromise the functionality of the pipelines
Nuclear moments of strongly deformed strontium isotopes
1990
Nuclear spins, moments and mean square charge radii of78–100Sr have been obtained by fast ion-beam collinear laserspectroscopy. The experiments performed at ISOLDE have been extended to include99Sr, measured by a non-optical detection scheme with a two-step optical pumping sequence. The results for the strongly deformed isotopes are discussed in the frame of the particle-plus-deformed core model.
Automated Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation after Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
2017
Background The discontinuation of mechanical ventilation after coronary surgery may prolong and significantly increase the load on intensive care unit personnel. We hypothesized that automated mode using INTELLiVENT-ASV can decrease duration of postoperative mechanical ventilation, reduce workload on medical staff, and provide safe ventilation after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB). The primary endpoint of our study was to assess the duration of postoperative mechanical ventilation during different modes of weaning from respiratory support (RS) after OPCAB. The secondary endpoint was to assess safety of the automated weaning mode and the number of manual interventions to the…
Evaluation of main functional dyspepsia symptoms after probiotic administration in patients receiving conventional pharmacological therapies
2021
Objective Postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) and epigastric pain syndrome (EPS) are the two main forms of functional dyspepsia (FD). Probiotics are a promising therapy for FD, but current data remains heterogeneous. This work aims to evaluate a probiotic combination of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus LR04 (DSM 16605), Lactiplantibacillus pentosus LPS01 (DSM 21980), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LP01 (LMG P-21021), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. delbruekii LDD01 (DMS 22106), alone or together with other pharmacological therapies, for clinical improvement of symptoms associated with FD. Methods Patients with FD were enrolled and divided into two groups: PDS and EPS. Probiotic alone or co…
The cost of an action potential.
2000
Neuronal modules, or 'cell-assemblies', comprising millions of mutually interconnected cells have been postulated to form the basis of many functions of the brain, such as mood, sleep, hunger, vigilance, and more. Depending on the extent of the module, neurocommunication in cell-assemblies might exceed metabolic resources. A medium-size (10000 neurons) module would require at least 10 J per l of brain, based on a calculated cost of an isolated action potential (AP) of 10(11)-10(12) molecules of ATP per cm(2) of cell membrane, with an absolute minimum of 10(6) ATP at a node of Ranvier. The figure matches the cost of depolarizing the unmyelinated axon of the large monopolar cell in the blowfl…
Comparison between the energy performance of a ground coupled water to water heat pump system and an air to water heat pump system for heating and co…
2008
Abstract The investigation presented in this article was aimed at demonstrating the technical and economical feasibility of using ground source heat pump systems in mixed climate applications, where cooling requirements are dominant. We show an experimental comparison between a ground coupled heat pump system and a conventional air to water heat pump system, focussing at the heating and cooling energy performance. A direct comparison could be made as both systems are linked, in parallel, to the same building with exactly the same loads and climatic conditions. For a whole climatic season the results obtained show that the geothermal system saves, in terms of primary energy consumption, a 43…
Ground Coupled Heat Pumps in Mixed Climate Areas: Design, Characterization and Optimization
2010
This contribution reviews the research work developed by the authors on the design, characterization and optimization of ground coupled heat pumps in mixed climates areas. The design of a ground coupled heat pump HVAC system starts with the estimation of the thermal loads that the air-conditioned area demands. The capacity of the ground source airconditioning system is determined from this thermal load estimation. With this value and a proper estimation of the ground thermal properties, the characteristics of the water to water heat pump and the required length and layout of the borehole heat exchangers are estimated. Determining ground thermal properties is crucial for an accurate design o…
Crystal structures of bR(D85S) favor a model of bacteriorhodopsin as a hydroxyl-ion pump
2003
AbstractStructural features on the extracellular side of the D85S mutant of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) suggest that wild-type bR could be a hydroxyl-ion pump. A position between the protonated Schiff base and residue 85 serves as an anion-binding site in the mutant protein, and hydroxyl ions should have access to this site during the O-intermediate of the wild-type bR photocycle. The guanidinium group of R82 is proposed (1) to serve as a shuttle that eliminates the Born energy penalty for entry of an anion into this binding pocket, and conversely, (2) to block the exit of a proton or a related proton carrier.
