3He neutron spin filter at ILL

1997

Abstract The strongly spin-dependent absorption of neutrons in nuclear spin polarized 3He opens the possibility to polarize neutrons over the full-spectrum of cold, thermal and epithermal neutrons. At ILL a neutron spin filter (NSF) development started which uses the direct optical pumping of metastable 3He atoms in a 3He plasma at 1 mbar. At present 0.5 bar 1 of gaseous 3He can be polarized within 1 h. Subsequent polarization-preserving compression by a two-stage compressor system enables one to prepare NSF cells of about 300 cm3 volume in the required pressure range of several bars. A remote type of operation based on relaxation times of up to 100 h has been demonstrated in a first survey…

Realization of a broad-band neutron spin filter with compressed, polarized 3He gas

1997

The strongly spin-dependent absorption of neutrons in nuclear spin polarized 3He opens the possibility to polarize beams of thermal and epithermal neutrons. An effective 3He neutron spin filter (NSF) requires high 3He nuclear polarization as well as a filter thickness corresponding to amount of gas in the order of 1 bar 1. We realized such a filter using direct optical pumping of metastable 3He∗ atoms in a 3He plasma at 1 mb. Metastable exchange scattering transfers the angular momentum to the whole ensemble of 3He atoms. At present 3.6 × 1018 3He-atoms s−1 are polarized up to 68%. Subsequent polarization preserving compression by a two-stage compressor system enables to prepare NSF cells o…

Spin pumping in noncollinear antiferromagnets

2021

The ac spin pumping of noncollinear antiferromagnets is theoretically investigated. Starting from an effective action description of the spin system, we derive the Onsager coefficients connecting the spin pumping and spin-transfer torque associated with the dynamics of the SO(3)-valued antiferromagnetic order parameter. Our theory is applied to a kagome antiferromagnet resonantly driven by a uniform external magnetic field. We demonstrate that the reactive (dissipative) spin-transfer torque parameter can be extracted from the pumped ac spin current in-phase (in quadrature) with the driving field. Furthermore, we find that the three spin-wave bands of the kagome AF generate spin currents wit…

Thickness and power dependence of the spin-pumping effect inY3Fe5O12/Pt heterostructures measured by the inverse spin Hall effect

2015

The dependence of the spin-pumping effect on the yttrium iron garnet $({\mathrm{Y}}_{3}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$, YIG) thickness detected by the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) has been investigated quantitatively. Due to the spin-pumping effect driven by the magnetization precession in the ferrimagnetic insulator ${\mathrm{Y}}_{3}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ film a spin-polarized electron current is injected into the Pt layer. This spin current is transformed into electrical charge current by means of the ISHE. An increase of the ISHE voltage with increasing film thickness is observed and compared to the theoretically expected behavior. The effective damping parameter of t…

Minimal Model of Spin-Transfer Torque and Spin Pumping Caused by the Spin Hall Effect

2015

In the normal metal/ferromagnetic insulator bilayer (such as Pt/Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$) and the normal metal/ferromagnetic metal/oxide trilayer (such as Pt/Co/AlO$_{x}$) where spin injection and ejection are achieved by the spin Hall effect in the normal metal, we propose a minimal model based on quantum tunneling of spins to explain the spin-transfer torque and spin pumping caused by the spin Hall effect. The ratio of their damping-like to field-like component depends on the tunneling wave function that is strongly influenced by generic material properties such as interface $s-d$ coupling, insulating gap, and layer thickness, yet the spin relaxation plays a minor role. The quantified resu…

Broadening and intensity redistribution in theNa(3p)hyperfine excitation spectra due to optical pumping in the weak excitation limit

2008

Detailed analysis of spectral line broadening and variations in relative intensities of hyperfine spectral components due to optical pumping is presented. Hyperfine levels of sodium 3p1/2 and 3p3/2 levels are selectively excited in a supersonic beam at various laser intensities under the conditions when optical pumping time is shorter than transit time of atoms through the laser beam. The excitation spectra exhibit significant line broadening at laser intensities well below the saturation intensity, and redistribution of intensities of hyperfine spectral components is observed, which in some cases is contradicting with intuitive expectations. Theoretical analysis of the dynamics of optical …

Kerr frequency comb generation in the normal dispersion regime of dispersion oscillating telecom fiber

2013

The generation of optical frequency combs has a variety of applications from optical metrology to spectroscopy and wavelength division multiplexing. Nonlinear methods to generate frequency combs are based on multiple four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear waveguides [1]. The mechanism for the generation of a wideband comb from a CW pump is Kerr-induced phase-matching of the FWM interaction or modulation instability (MI), which requires operating in the anomalous dispersion regime. Such restriction can be circumvented with a cavity geometry, where MI [2] and comb generation [3] may also be observed in the normal dispersion region. Alternatively, one may obtain MI and unequally spaced Ker…

An Improved Double-Pulse Non-Normal Incidence Pumping Geometry for Transient Collisionally Excited Soft X-Ray Lasers

2009

An optimized pumping geometry for transient collisionally excited soft X-ray lasers is presented, similar to the geometry proposed by [1]. In contrast to usual approaches, where a nanosecond pre-pulse is assumed to provide the optimal plasma preparation and a picosecond pulse performs the final heating- and excitation process, two pulses of equal duration in the range around 10 picoseconds are applied. Both pulses are produced in the front end of the CPA pump laser. They are focused onto the target with the same spherical mirror under non-normal incidence geometry, optimized for efficient traveling wave excitation for the main-pulse. A first experiment was performed on Ni-like palladium (14…
