Measurement of Protein Synthesis: In Vitro Comparison of 68Ga-DOTA-Puromycin, [3H]Tyrosine, and 2-Fluoro-[3H]tyrosine

2012

Aim: Puromycin has played an important role in our understanding of the eukaryotic ribosome and protein synthesis. It has been known for more than 40 years that this antibiotic is a universal protein synthesis inhibitor that acts as a structural analog of an aminoacyl-transfer RNA (aa-tRNA) in eukaryotic ribosomes. Due to the role of enzymes and their synthesis in situations of need (DNA damage, e.g., after chemo- or radiation therapy), determination of protein synthesis is important for control of antitumor therapy, to enhance long-term survival of tumor patients, and to minimize side-effects of therapy. Multiple attempts to reach this goal have been made through the last decades, mostly u…

The lipoprotein lipase activity in cultured beating heart cells of the post-natal rat.

1974

Summary The lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity was studied in cultured beating heart cells of the post natal rat as a function of the culture age, from the freshly trypsinized cell suspension up to the 14th day of culture. The LPL activity remains at a practically stationary level during the first four days of culture, and then increases rapidly to reach a plateau, at a level 3–4 times higher at the 21th day of culturing. The significance of this enzymatic activity progression comparing to 3H thymidine incorporation from the point of view of cell differentiation is discussed. Our results suggest that after the 12th day of culture, cells contain their optimal enzymatic apparatus for lipid met…

Diet and trophic niche of the invasive signal crayfish in the first invaded Italian stream ecosystem.

2021

The occurrence of the signal crayfsh Pacifastacus leniusculus in the Valla Stream was the frst established population of this invasive species recorded in an Italian stream ecosystem. We evaluated the seasonality of diet and trophic niche of invasive signal crayfsh in order to estimate the ecological role and efects on native communities of the stream ecosystem. We studied the diferences in food source use between sexes, life stages and seasons using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses. To supplement stable isotope analyses, we evaluated food source usage using traditional stomach content analysis. We tested the hypothesis that juveniles have a diferent diet, showing diferent trophi…

Reliģiski-filozofiski raksti, 20

2016

Molecular specification of cell lines in the embryo of Platynereis (Annelida)

1992

In this study we describe the site and moment of histospecific differentiation in developmental stages of the annelid Platynereis dumerilii by use of biochemical markers. The monoclonal antibody (mab) OI7 and uncloned hybridoma supernatants (pAb's) OI8, OI10, OI46 and OI69 recognize neural antigens that appear asynchronously during development. By an enzymatic test, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was found specific for nervous tissue as well. The patterns of neural structures labelled by antibodies differ, however, from those revealed by AChE staining. Experimental inhibition of transcription (with actinomycin D) and of translation (using puromycin) demonstrate that the expression of histospec…

Does trait-based joint species distribution modelling reveal the signature of competition in stream macroinvertebrate communities?

2021

1. The occupancy and abundance of species are jointly driven by local factors, such as environmental characteristics and biotic interactions, and regional‐scale factors, such as dispersal and climate. Recently, it has been shown that biotic interactions shape species occupancies and abundances beyond local extents. However, for small ectothermic animals, particularly for those occurring in freshwater environments, the importance of biotic interactions remains understudied. Species‐to‐species associations from joint species distribution models (i.e. species associations while controlling for environmental characteristics) are increasingly used to draw hypotheses of which species possibly sho…

Subtropical streams harbour higher genus richness and lower abundance of insects compared to boreal streams, but scale matters

2018

Aim: Biological diversity typically varies between climatically different regions, and regions closer to the equator often support higher numbers of taxa than those closer to the poles. However, these trends have been assessed for a few organism groups, and the existing studies have rarely been based on extensive identical surveys in different climatic regions. Location: We conducted standardized surveys of wadeable streams in a boreal (western Finland) and a subtropical (south-eastern Brazil) region, sampling insects identically from 100 streams in each region and measuring the same environmental variables in both regions. Taxon: Aquatic insects. Methods: Comparisons were made at the scale…
