DC series arc faults in PV systems. Detection methods and experimental characterization
2020
This work is focused on the arc faults phenomenon in DC photovoltaic (PV) systems. The paper gives an overview of arc detection methods proposed in literature and presents a preliminary experimental characterization of the arcing current, focusing the attention on series arcs, whose detection is particularly challenging. Experimental tests are carried out, both in laboratory and on field, in order to investigate some relevant characteristics in the arcing current, which can be feasible for the arc detection purpose. Both arcing and non-arcing current signals are acquired and compared in both time and frequency domain. On-field measurements are carried out on a real photovoltaic system, in a…
Simulation and experimental validation of multicarrier PWM techniques for three-phase five-level cascaded H-bridge with FPGA controller
2017
The FPGA represents a valid solution for the design and implementation of control systems for inverters adopted in many fields of power electronics because of its high flexibility of use. This paper presents an overview and an experimental validation of the MC SPWM techniques for a three-phase, five-level, cascaded H-Bridge inverter with FPGA controller-based. Several control algorithms are here implemented by means of the VHDL programming language and the output voltage waveforms obtained from the main PWM techniques are compared in terms of THD%. Simulation and experimental results are analyzed, compared and discussed.
Critical assessment of support for the evolution of photovoltaics and feed-in tariff(s) in Italy
2015
Abstract The feed-in tariff(s) mechanism involves an obligation on the part of an electricity provider to purchase electricity generated by renewable energy sources in its relevant area, paying a tariff determined by public authorities and guaranteed for a specific time period. Feed-in tariff(s) have been the primary mechanism used for supporting the development of renewable energy sources in the EU and, up to date, they are being applied in 20 EU Member Countries. On 6 July 2013, the Italian experience with feed-in tariff(s) for photovoltaic systems finished. During its lifetime of eight years, this incentive mechanism, named “Conto Energia”, was characterized by periods of great success f…
Analysis of photovoltaic potential in urban areas: the effect of the eurozone financial crisis
2012
The aim of this paper is to estimate how the profitability of grid-connected PV systems may vary month by month due to the changes in all parameters involved in the economic evaluation (discount rate, PV electricity selling price, inflation rate, price of PV devices etc.). The effects of these variations were investigated for a district of a city in the South Italy (Palermo) by means of a methodology appropriately defined to explore the architectural morphology of buildings and evaluate the solar potential of PV systems installed on roofs. The results of the analysis provide the trend of the actual coverage of the district power demand from June 2010 to March 2011. Finally, a sensitivity an…
The evolution of the FIT mechanism in Italy for PV systems: a critical analysis
2013
The paper presents an analysis of the Feed'in Tariffs (FIT) mechanism development in Italy from 2005 to 2013 and named “Conto Energia”. In particular the work examines the five editions of the “Conto Energia”, highlighting both advantages and critical issues for the PV market development in Italy; this analysis is particular interesting due to the fact that the cap on FITs in Italy has been reached in June 2013.
Economical Analysis of Financial Supports for Large-Scale Photovoltaic PV plants in Eastern Europeen Union Countries
2010
Today, photovoltaic (PV) attracts considerable interest among renewable energy sources (RES), because of its potential to significantly contribute to the future of clean energies. However, PV development is strongly related to the support policies introduced by national governments. The modification or fading out of such support schemes can strongly influence the development of the PV market in any given country. Although the PV market in European developing countries is still quite small, it has been growing rapidly in recent years. Until 2006, the installation of small off-grid PV plants prevailed in eastern EU countries. Starting from 2008, large-scale on-grid PV plants have been put int…
An experimental analysis of power quality in presence of single phase grid connected photovoltaic systems
2004
In this paper, an experimental power quality analysis in presence of single phase grid connected PV systems is performed in a PV system installed at the Department of Electric Engineering of the University of Palermo through a measurement system set up by the Authors. In particular the analysis has been carried out focusing the attention on voltage and current distortion, as the solar radiation varies. The corresponding Total Harmonic Distortions in voltage and current terms are reported and compared with the standards limits. The presence of interharmonic components is also discussed.
Feed-in Tariffs for Grid-connected PV Systems: The Situation in the European Community
2007
Distributed generation demonstrates to be able to significantly influence the electric power system bringing considerable benefits to the quality of service and improving the energetic efficiency of the distribution network. In particular, in the last few years, distributed generation from renewable sources is considerably increased thanks to the many support policies promoted worldwide with the aim of facing the environmental issue and the problem of the permanent rise of prices of the fossil energy. In this contest the paper presents a study of the "feed-in tariffs" financing measure carried out, at present, in many European countries and responsible of the increase in these last years of…
Design and installation of a grid-connected PV system
2014
As the worlds electrical demand is being more covered by photovoltaic (PV) systems, Germanyinstalled 3.3 GW of the worlds PV systems in 2013 compared to 0.6 MW being installed inNorway. Irradiation measurements done for southern Norway indicates that the conditions formore PV systems being installed are good when comparing irradiation in Grimstad to Hamburg. This thesis addresses the initial steps of planning and building a PV system to analysing howthe inverter handles the varying irradiance in southern Norway. To investigate the opportunities in Grimstad, a Theia HE-t 3.8 string inverter from Eltek wasinstalled along with 23 de-rated PV modules to constitute a PV system of 2.116 kWp. The PV…
