A neutron tomography study: Probing the spontaneous crystallization of randomly packed granular assemblies

2018

We study the spontaneous crystallization of an assembly of highly monodisperse steel spheres under shaking, as it evolves from localized icosahedral ordering towards a packing reaching crystalline ordering. Towards this end, real space neutron tomography measurements on the granular assembly are carried out, as it is systematically subjected to a variation of frequency and amplitude. As expected, we see a presence of localized icosahedral ordering in the disordered initial state (packing fraction around 0.62). As the frequency is increased for both the shaking amplitudes (0.2 and 0.6 mm) studied here, there is a rise in packing fraction, accompanied by an evolution to crystallinity. The ext…

Hard sphere fluids at a soft repulsive wall: A comparative study using Monte Carlo and density functional methods

2011

Hard-sphere fluids confined between parallel plates at a distance D apart are studied for a wide range of packing fractions including also the onset of crystallization, applying Monte Carlo simulation techniques and density functional theory. The walls repel the hard spheres (of diameter σ) with a Weeks-Chandler-Andersen (WCA) potential V(WCA)(z) = 4ε[(σ(w)/z)(12) - (σ(w)/z)(6) + 1/4], with range σ(w) = σ/2. We vary the strength ε over a wide range and the case of simple hard walls is also treated for comparison. By the variation of ε one can change both the surface excess packing fraction and the wall-fluid (γ(wf)) and wall-crystal (γ(wc)) surface free energies. Several different methods t…

An automated procedure for computing the packing properties of dense and locked sands by image analysis of thin sections

2014

The macroscopic mechanical behaviour of dense sands originates to a great extent from their microstructural characteristics such as the coordination number, the grain contact and the packing density indexes. The study of intergranular contacts and the reckoning of these indexes may be carried out on planar images of the grains either by means of time-consuming visual inspection assisted by CAD or by automatic image analysis. An innovative method for the automatic determination of microstructural characteristics of sands based on image analysis of thin section is proposed. Tests performed on a locked sand show that the proposed method is much more effective, convenient and faster than the us…

Structure-property relationships in aromatic thioethers featuring aggregation-induced emission : Solid-state structures and theoretical analysis

2019

We describe in this paper a structure–property relationship study of aromatic thioethers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. We combine a structural analysis based on geometrical consideration with an in-depth analysis of the crystalline packing supported by quantum mechanical calculations. Our results allow us to correlate the enhanced fluorescence quantum yields with the significant increase of C–H⋯π and the decrease of π⋯π interactions in the solid state – a result which supports the well-accepted AIE mechanism quantitatively.

Seedless assembly of colloidal crystals by inverted micro-fluidic pumping

2018

We propose a simple seedless approach to assemble millimeter sized monolayer single colloidal crystals with desired orientations at predetermined locations on an unstructured charged substrate. This approach utilizes the millimeter-ranged fluid flow on the bottom glass substrate induced by an ion exchange resin (IEX) fixed on top of the closed sample cell. This fluid flow increases with decreasing height of the sample cell and increasing radius R of the IEX. For a single inverted pump, millimeter sized monolayer single crystals of hexagonal close packing can be obtained. For two closely spaced (D ~ 4R) pumps, the formed crystals have a predefined orientation along the line connecting the tw…

Matheuristics for the irregular bin packing problem with free rotations

2017

[EN] We present a number of variants of a constructive algorithm able to solve a wide variety of variants of the Two-Dimensional Irregular Bin Packing Problem (2DIBPP). The aim of the 2DIBPP is to pack a set of irregular pieces, which may have concavities, into stock sheets (bins) with fixed dimensions in such a way that the utilization is maximized. This problem is inspired by a real application from a ceramic company in Spain. In addition, this problem arises in other industries such as the garment industry or ship building. The constructive procedure presented in this paper allows both free orientation for the pieces, as in the case of the ceramic industry, or a finite set of orientation…

Reactive GRASP for the strip-packing problem

2008

This paper presents a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) for the strip packing problem, which is the problem of placing a set of rectangular pieces into a strip of a given width and infinite height so as to minimize the required height. We investigate several strategies for the constructive and improvement phases and several choices for critical search parameters. We perform extensive computational experiments with well-known instances which have been previously reported, first to select the best alternatives and then to compare the efficiency of our algorithm with other procedures. The results show that the GRASP algorithm outperforms recently reported metaheuristics.

A GRASP/Path Relinking algorithm for two- and three-dimensional multiple bin-size bin packing problems

2013

The three-dimensional multiple bin-size bin packing problem, MBSBPP, is the problem of packing a set of boxes into a set of bins when several types of bins of different sizes and costs are available and the objective is to minimize the total cost of bins used for packing the boxes. First we propose a GRASP algorithm, including a constructive procedure, a postprocessing phase and some improvement moves. The best solutions obtained are then combined into a Path Relinking procedure for which we have developed three versions: static, dynamic and evolutionary. An extensive computational study, using two- and three-dimensional instances, shows the relative efficiency of the alternatives considere…
