A general equilibrium analysis of climate change impacts on tourism

2006

This paper studies the economic implications of climate-change-induced variations in tourism demand, using a world CGE model. The model is first re-calibrated at some future years, obtaining hypothetical benchmark equilibria, which are subsequently perturbed by shocks, simulating the effects of climate change. We portray the impact of climate change on tourism by means of two sets of shocks, occurring simultaneously. The first set of shocks translate predicted variations in tourist flows into changes of consumption preferences for domestically produced goods. The second set reallocate income across world regions, simulating the effect of higher or lower tourists' expenditure. Our analysis h…

KLUM@GTAP: Introducing Biophysical Aspects of Land-Use Decisions into a Computable General Equilibrium Model a Coupling Experiment

2008

In this paper, the global agricultural land use model Kleines Land Use Model is coupled to an extended version of the computable general equilibrium model (CGE) Global Trade Analysis Project in order to consistently assess the integrated impacts of climate change on global cropland allocation and its implication for economic development. The methodology is innovative as it introduces dynamic economic land-use decisions based also on the biophysical aspects of land into a state-of-the-art CGE; it further allows the projection of resulting changes in cropland patterns on a spatially more explicit level. A convergence test and illustrative future simulations underpin the robustness and potenti…

Global convergence and rate of convergence of a method of centers

1994

We consider a method of centers for solving constrained optimization problems. We establish its global convergence and that it converges with a linear rate when the starting point of the algorithm is feasible as well as when the starting point is infeasible. We demonstrate the effect of the scaling on the rate of convergence. We extend afterwards, the stability result of [5] to the infeasible case anf finally, we give an application to semi-infinite optimization problems.

Iterative approximation to a coincidence point of two mappings

2015

In this article two methods for approximating the coincidence point of two mappings are studied and moreover, rates of convergence for both methods are given. These results are illustrated by several examples, in particular we apply such results to study the convergence and their rate of convergence of these methods to the solution of a nonlinear integral equation and of a nonlinear differential equation.

Towards More Sustainable Pavement Management Practices Using Embedded Sensor Technologies

2019

Road agencies are constantly being placed in difficult situations when making road maintenance and rehabilitation decisions as a result of diminishing road budgets and mounting environmental concerns for any chosen strategies. This has led practitioners to seek out new alternative and innovative ways of monitoring road conditions and planning maintenance routines. This paper considers the use of innovative piezo-floating gate (PFG) sensors and conventional strain gauges to continuously monitor the pavement condition and subsequently trigger maintenance activities. These technologies can help develop optimized maintenance strategies as opposed to traditional ad-hoc approaches, which often le…

Analysis of block random rocking on nonlinear flexible foundation

2020

Abstract In this paper the rocking response of a rigid block randomly excited at its foundation is examined. A nonlinear flexible foundation model is considered accounting for the possibility of uplifting in the case of strong excitation. Specifically, based on an appropriate nonlinear impact force model, the foundation is treated as a bed of continuously distributed springs in parallel with nonlinear dampers. The statistics of the rocking response is examined by an analytical procedure which involves a combination of static condensation and stochastic linearization methods. In this manner, repeated numerical integration of the highly nonlinear differential equations of motion is circumvent…

"Nanodentistry": exploring the beauty of miniature

2011

Feynman’s early vision in 1959 gave birth to the concept of nanotechnology. He saw it as an unavoidable development in the progress of science and said that there is plenty of room at the bottom. Since then, nanotechnology has been part of mainstream scientific theory with potential medical and dental applications. Numerous theoretical predictions have been made based on the potential applications of nanotechnology in dentistry, with varying levels of optimism. While a few layers of nanotechnologic capability have become a reality for oral health in the last decade, many of these applications are still in their puerile stage .The most substantial contribution of nanotechnology to dentistry …

Relationship and correspondence between different impact indicators in a sample of articles of excellence

2016

The objective was to compare the impact factor to 2 years of self-citations (IF2Y) with impact factor 2 years without self-citations (IF2YWS) and IF2Y with the impact factor to 5 years (IF5Y) as well as IF2YWS with SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) about journals where they were published articles of excellence in smoking by Spanish authors in the period 2008-2012. The search was conducted in the SCI-E and the SSCI-E on November 25, 2013. Were selected documents that had the h index of the strategy global sample (number of articles that have at least that number of citations) to search using the descriptors "smok ∗" OR "tobac ∗". A total of 69 articles by Spanish authors were recovered from 55 jou…

Lattice-Boltzmann and finite difference simulations for the permeability of three-dimensional porous media

2002

Numerical micropermeametry is performed on three dimensional porous samples having a linear size of approximately 3 mm and a resolution of 7.5 $\mu$m. One of the samples is a microtomographic image of Fontainebleau sandstone. Two of the samples are stochastic reconstructions with the same porosity, specific surface area, and two-point correlation function as the Fontainebleau sample. The fourth sample is a physical model which mimics the processes of sedimentation, compaction and diagenesis of Fontainebleau sandstone. The permeabilities of these samples are determined by numerically solving at low Reynolds numbers the appropriate Stokes equations in the pore spaces of the samples. The physi…
