Relaxion Stars and their detection via Atomic Physics
2019
The cosmological relaxion can address the hierarchy problem, while its coherent oscillations can constitute dark matter in the present universe. We consider the possibility that the relaxion forms gravitationally bound objects that we denote as relaxion stars. The density of these stars would be higher than that of the local dark matter density, resulting in enhanced signals in table-top detectors, among others. Furthermore, we raise the possibility that these objects may be trapped by an external gravitational potential, such as that of the Earth or the Sun. This leads to formation of relaxion halos of even greater density. We discuss several interesting implications of relaxion halos, as …
Lensing of fast radio bursts: future constraints on primordial black hole density with an extended mass function and a new probe of exotic compact fe…
2018
The discovery of gravitational waves from binary black hole mergers has renewed interest in primordial black holes forming a part of the dark matter density of our Universe. Various tests have been proposed to test this hypothesis. One of the cleanest tests is the lensing of fast radio bursts. In this situation, the presence of a compact object near the line of sight produces two images of the radio burst. If the images are sufficiently separated in time, this technique can constrain the presence of primordial black holes. One can also try to detect the lensed image of the mini-bursts within the main burst. We show that this technique can produce the leading constraints over a wide range in…
A social and environmental impact assessment of the Crucitas gold mining project in Costa Rica
2014
In 2008 Costa Rica was facing a critical time in its history. A five year mining moratorium had just ended and mining companies were interested in exploring untapped resources in the country. The country was facing important decisions with which development path to take. The Crucitas Mining Project (CMP) was an issue that the whole country had an opinion on; in fact the Constitutional Court of Costa Rica (SALA IV) was debating what to do with the CMP. The purpose of this study was to assist decision makers by providing a well-rounded assessment of the impacts the CMP would have. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether it would be better for Costa Rica to let the mining operation cont…
Counselling toward reducing alcohol use, knowledge about its morbidity and personal consumption among students of medical and dental courses in north…
2021
Background Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is directly linked to high-risk consumption. Healthcare students have a crucial role to play in its prevention and management. The aim of this study is to analyse alcohol consumption, as well as to consider the knowledge and attitudes regarding morbidity, and the stage of change when providing assistance to quit AUD. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among Dentistry and Medical students using specific and validated questionnaires in an anonymous and voluntary way. Initially, 925 students were invited to participate, of them 500 were reached. Results Among them 85.9% suffered from AUD of whom 75% were women (p<0.001), and it was …
Sigma-fragmentability and the property SLD in C(K) spaces
AbstractWe characterize two topological properties in Banach spaces of type C(K), namely, being σ-fragmented by the norm metric and having a countable cover by sets of small local norm-diameter (briefly, the property norm-SLD). We apply our results to deduce that Cp(K) is σ-fragmented by the norm metric when K belongs to a certain class of Rosenthal compacta as well as to characterize the property norm-SLD in Cp(K) in case K is scattered.
Beam matching with space charge in energy recovery linacs
2019
Abstract Matching with space charge of an Energy-Recovery Linac (ERL) arc into the subsequent RF structure is essential to preserve beam quality. We show how to match beam envelopes and dispersion along the bends and recirculation arcs of an ERL, including space charge forces, in order to adjust the beam to the parameters of the subsequent RF structure. For a qualitative analysis, we show that one can use a beam matrix approach together with the smooth focusing approximation but with longitudinal–transverse coupling. It is also shown that the space-charge-modified dispersion plays a key role for the adjustment of the momentum compaction R 56 required for both the isochronous and the non-iso…
Sustainable recovery of critical elements from seawater saltworks bitterns by integration of high selective sorbents and reactive precipitation and c…
2023
The availability of raw mineral resources containing elements included in the Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) list is a growing concern for the European Union. Sea mining has been identified as a promising secondary source. In particular, brines obtained in solar saltworks (bitterns) contain relevant amounts of valuable CRMs such as Mg(II), B(III), other alkaline/alkaline earth metals (Rb(I), Cs(I), Sr(II)) and transition/post-transition elements (Co(II), Ga(III), Ge(IV)). However, the low concentration of some of these elements (µg/L) requires an effort to develop recovery routes that are sustainable and economically feasible where the required chemicals and energy are produced on-site from …

From the LCA of food products to the environmental assessment of protected crops districts: A case-study in the south of Italy
2010
In the present study, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology was applied to evaluate the energy consumption and environmental burdens associated with the production of protected crops in an agricultural district in the Mediterranean region. In this study, LCA was used as a ‘support tool’, to address local policies for sustainable production and consumption patterns, and to create a ‘knowledge base’ for environmental assessment of an extended agricultural production area. The proposed approach combines organisation-specific tools, such as Environmental Management Systems and Environmental Product Declarations, with the environmental management of the district. Questionnaires were distribute…
Mapping of global scientific research in comorbidity and multimorbidity: A cross-sectional analysis
2018
[Background]: The management of comorbidity and multimorbidity poses major challenges to health services around the world. Analysis of scientific research in comorbidity and multimorbidity is limited in the biomedical literature. This study aimed to map global scientific research in comorbidity and multimorbidity to understand the maturity and growth of the area during the past decades. [Methods and findings]: This was a cross-sectional analysis of the Web of Science. Searches were run from inception until November 8, 2016. We included research articles or reviews with no restrictions by language or publication date. Data abstraction was done by one researcher. A process of standardization …
