The topics of international publications on paediatric anaesthesia from 1993 to 1998.
2000
A comprehensive compilation of the current international literature on paediatric anaesthesia is still lacking. It was the aim of this study to identify all publications with a focus on paediatric anaesthesia, and to determine the spectrum of topics, as well as the publication type and language for the period between 1993 and 1998. All articles published in 12 major anaesthesia journals were evaluated and, additionally, a computerized, Internet-based Medline-search was performed using selected keywords. The analysis was limited to original articles, case reports, reviews and editorials. For the period between 1993 and 1998, a total of 2259 (377 per year) publications on paediatric anaesthes…
Barriers and incentives for Italian paediatricians to become smoking cessation promoters: a GARD-Italy Demonstration Project
2020
Background: Paediatricians rarely devote any time to screening and treatment for parental tobacco use. The present project is part of a Global Alliance against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD)-Italy Demonstration Project, aimed to increase the skills of primary care physicians and paediatricians as "promoter of smoking cessation". The aims of this study were: (I) to identify latent classes of barriers and incentives for smoking cessation counseling among paediatricians using latent class analysis (LCA); (II) to investigate risk factors for inclusion into the identified classes. Methods: In 2018, 1,500 Italian paediatricians were invited to complete an online survey on passive smoke expos…
Artificial intelligence as an emerging diagnostic approach in paediatric pulmonology.
2020
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the subset of computer science that covers anything related to making machines smart. Along with machine learning (ML), AI encompasses a wide range of approaches and technologies, including knowledge discovery and data mining methodologies, predictive analytics, advanced statistics for pattern recognition and neurocomputing. AI technologies and their expanding applications in diagnostics call for constant updates of knowledge and skills. In this commentary, we outline recent breakthroughs in paediatric pulmonology.
Application of latent class analysis in assessing the awareness, attitude, practice and satisfaction of paediatricians on sleep disorder management i…
2020
Aim To identify subgroups regarding paediatricians’ awareness, attitude, practice and satisfaction about management of Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) in Italy using Latent Class Analysis (LCA). Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on a large sample of Italian paediatricians. Using a self-administered questionnaire, the study collected information on 420 Paediatric Hospital Paediatricians (PHPs) and 594 Family Care Paediatricians (FCPs). LCA was used to discover underlying response patterns, thus allowing identification of respondent groups with similar awareness, attitude, practice and satisfaction. A logistic regression model was used to investigate which independent variables i…
Emergence in 2017-2019 of novel reassortant equine-like G3 rotavirus strains in Palermo, Sicily.
2021
Rotavirus A (RVA) is a major etiologic agent of gastroenteritis in children worldwide. Hospital-based surveillance of viral gastroenteritis in paediatric population in Palermo (Italy) from 2017 onwards revealed a sharp increase in G3P[8] RVAs, accounting for 71% of all the RVAs detected in 2019. This pattern had not been observed before in Italy, with G3 RVA usually being detected at rates lower than 3%. In order to investigate this unique epidemiological pattern, the genetic diversity of G3 RVAs identified during a 16-year long surveillance (2004-2019) was explored by systematic sequencing of the VP7 and VP4 genes and by whole genome sequencing of selected G3 strains, representative of the…

SYNCOPE AND ARRHYTHMIAS IN PAEDIATRIC AGE
Nationwide surveillance study of human astrovirus infections in an Italian paediatric population
2012
SUMMARYThe study investigated the genetic diversity of human astroviruses (HAstVs) detected in children hospitalized with gastroenteritis in Italy in 2008–2009. A total of 1321 faecal samples were collected in Parma (northern Italy), Bari (southern Italy), and Palermo (Sicily) and screened for the presence of HAstVs. RT–PCR amplification of a portion at the 5′-end of ORF2 allowed the detection of HAstVs in 3·95% of the patients. Four different genotypes (HAstV-1, HAstV-2, HAstV-4, HAstV-5) were found to be circulating during the study period, with HAstV-1 being the predominant type. Interestingly, a novel lineage, proposed as HAstV-2d, was found to have emerged in Parma in 2009. Investigati…
