La crucifixion dans les peintures murales carolingiennes dans l'Europe latine chrétienne et sur ses marges (IXè - début du XIème siècle)

2015

This Dissertation focuses on the iconography of the Crucifixion in the Carolingian mural painting between the 9th and the beginning of the 11th century. Pivot in the Christian thought with its dogmatic scope, the Crucifixion remains however poorly represented in the Latin West until the middle of the 8th century. Actually, the Carolingian period is a decisive turning point when the Crucifixion displays gradually on all the supports and through different technics, at the same time as the iconography tends to be crystallized. Based on a documentation composed of thirteen decorations painted between the 9th and the beginning of the 11th century and distributed in the former limits of the Carol…

Determination of selected phthalates by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry in mural paintings from Palermo (Italy)

2013

Abstract Phthalate esters for decades, and probably even now, were used as softeners in water-based paintings. In general, these compounds are dangerous owing to their carcinogenicity and reproductive effects. Phthalates are not chemically but only physically bound to the matrices, hence, they may be leached into the environment and are ubiquitously found in environmental matrices. Considering that, construction is one of most important fields in Europe, and probably worldwide, with respect to its economic, technological and environmental impact. In the present work the phthalate esters content of several mural paintings was evaluated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Because…

A multi-analytical non-invasive and micro-invasive approach to canvas oil paintings. General considerations from a specific case

2017

Abstract The investigation of artwork to understand story, state of conservation and to know about the composing materials is an issue that is getting growing attention in specialized literature. From a methodological point of view the scientific community is trying to reach a common proposal that could contribute to define a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the application of portable non-invasive and microinvasive techniques for in-situ analyses. In this paper the oil painting on canvas “St. Girolamo nello studio” by Nicolo Buttafoco was investigated to known the materials and techniques used by the artist as well as to evaluate its preservation status. The survey has been conducted…

Comparative evaluation of the effect of Er:YAG laser and low level laser irradiation combined with CPP-ACPF cream on treatment of enamel caries

2013

Objectives: This study investigated the effectiveness of low power red and infrared lasers and that of Er:YAG laser, in association with CPP-ACPF cream, on remineralization of white spot lesions. Study Design: Fifty intact premolars were immersed in a demineralization solution for 10 weeks to induce caries like lesions and then were divided into five groups. In group 1, the teeth were covered with a CPP-ACPF cream for 3 minutes and then irradiated with a low power red laser (660 nm, 200 mW) for 1 minute through the cream. In group 2, the treatment was the same as that in group 1, but an infrared laser (810 nm, 200 mW) was employed. The specimens in group 3 were irradiated with an Er:YAG las…

Erosive effect of industrialized fruit juices exposure in enamel and dentine substrates: An in vitro study

2021

Background Erosive tooth wear has been a highly prevalent and emerging phenomenon related to eating habits of the population. Aim: This study sought to investigate industrialized fruit juices exposure in enamel and dentine substrates in terms of erosive effect. Material and methods Human enamel and dentine specimens were randomized into 8 groups (n=8): Grape juice - Ades®, Grape juice - Del Valle Kapo®, Grape juice - Aurora®, Orange juice - Del Valle Kapo®, Orange juice - Ades®, Strawberry juice - Mais Vita®, Strawberry juice - Ades®, Citrus fruit juice - Tampico®. Specimens were submitted to an in vitro erosive challenge and to a microhardness test to evaluate the percentage of surface mic…

The good, the bad and the ugly – A visual guide for common post-mortem wear patterns in vertebrate teeth

2021

Abstract Dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) is a common wear proxy using dental wear features to reconstruct diet in extant and extinct taxa. Dietary reconstructions of extinct species can be biased due to post-mortem mechanical modification of the dental surface. These post-mortem surface alterations can be caused by material loss after death, or as the result of burial, excavation, or preparation processes. In this study, we explore post-mortem surface alterations that occur during excavation, preparation, and conservation processes. We present a first general overview of unsuitable and suspicious dental surface scans and describe them both qualitatively and quantitatively using den…

Correlation between alteration of enamel roughness and tooth color

2018

Background To establish the correlation between enamel roughness and color change of tooth. Material and Methods Enamel/dentin blocks (5 x 5 x 3.2 mm) were serially ground with the following abrasive paper: 1200-grit, 800-grit, and 600-grit SiC papers. In the paired model, the analyses of color (L*, a*, b*, ΔE) and roughness (Ra) were performed among the sandpaper exposure. The data were subjected to ANOVA using models for repeated measures followed by the Tukey test. The Pearson correlation test was used to determine whether there was a relationship between Ra values and color results (α = 0.05). Results The L* values decreased in accordance with the increase of Ra, with statistical differ…
