Vertebrate telomeres consist of tandem repeats of the TTAGGG sequence that cap the ends of chromosomes, protecting them from degradation and fusion. A novel serine/threonine kinase gene, STK33 , on human chromosome 11p15.3

Human chromosomal region 11p15 is known to be associated with several diseases including predispositions to develop various tumor types. In search of candidate genes, a novel human kinase gene is described, STK33, which codes for a serine/threonine protein kinase. The gene was discovered by comparative genome analysis of human chromosome 11p15.3 and its orthologous region on distal mouse chromosome 7. Human STK33 gene contains 12 exons as has been determined by the comparison to the full-length transcript amplified from human uterus RNA. Holoprosencephaly: examples of clinical variability and etiologic heterogeneity.

Clinical variability and causal heterogeneity of holoprosencephaly is discussed in relation to several newborn infants with cyclopia (cases 4,5,6), cebocephaly (cases 2,3), and premaxillary agenesis (case 1). In subjects with holoprosencephaly, the presence of multiple malformations is an indicator of concomitant chromosome aberrations, as in present case 1 (Down syndrome) and case 3 (trisomy 13). Cases 5 and 6 are two monozygotic twins with the same type of cyclopia and alobar holoprosencephaly recognized by prenatal ultrasonography. Genetic linkage of autosomal dominant progressive supranuclear palsy to 1q31.1

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a disorder of unknown pathogenesis. Familial clusters of PSP have been reported related to mutations of protein tau. We report the linkage of a large Spanish family with typical autosomal dominant PSP to a new locus in chromosome 1. Four members of this family had typical PSP, confirmed by neuropathology in one case. At least five ancestors had similar disease. Other members of the family have incomplete phenotypes. The power of the linkage analysis was increased by detecting presymptomatic individuals with 18F-fluoro-dopa and 18F-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography. A high-density SNP linkage scan with 142 combined subtype ADHD sib pairs identifies linkage regions on chromosomes 9 and 16

As part of the International Multi-centre ADHD Gene (IMAGE) project we have completed an affected sibling pair study of 142 narrowly defined DSM-IV combined type ADHD proband-sibling pairs. We found suggestive linkage on chromosomes 9 and 16 with non-parametric multipoint peak LOD scores of 2.13 and 3.1 respectively. There have been several previous ADHD linkage scans. Genome-wide analysis of multi-ancestry cohorts identifies new loci influencing intraocular pressure and susceptibility to glaucoma

Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is an important risk factor in developing glaucoma, and variability in IOP might herald glaucomatous development or progression. We report the results of a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of 18 population cohorts from the International Glaucoma Genetics Consortium (IGGC), comprising 35,296 multi-ancestry participants for IOP. T1DM is very common in Sweden and is positively associated with HLA class II genes. Approximately 89% of the newly diagnosed patients carry the high-risk HLA DR4-DQ8 and DR3-DQ2. The remaining 11% develop T1DM without them. This can be due to involvement of other genes and environmental factors. Natural killer (NK) cells of the innate immune system are important in antiviral and antitumor immunity. They are implicated in the etiology of autoimmune T1DM. Variable phenotype in 17q12 microdeletions: Clinical and molecular characterization of a new case

Microdeletions of 17q12 including the hepatocyte nuclear factor 1 beta (HNF1B) gene, as well as point mutations of this gene, are associated with the Renal Cysts and Diabetes syndrome (RCAD, OMIM 137920) and genitourinary alterations.
