International audience; Interstitial deletions involving the 15q21.1 band are very rare. Only 4 of these cases have been studied using molecular cytogenetic techniques in order to confirm the deletion of the whole FBN1 gene. The presence of clinical features of the Marfan syndrome (MFS) spectrum associated with mental retardation has been described in only 2/4 patients. Here we report on a 16-year-old female referred for suspicion of MFS (positive thumb and wrist sign, scoliosis, joint hyperlaxity, high-arched palate with dental crowding, dysmorphism, mitral insufficiency with dystrophic valve, striae). Risk estimation in localized unresectable single copy MYCN neuroblastoma by the status of chromosomes 1p and 11q

In localized neuroblastoma, the identification of patients requiring intensive treatment is still difficult. We retrospectively analyzed data of 280 single copy MYCN stage 2 and 3 neuroblastoma patients with gross residual tumor after initial surgery. The 3-year-event free survival of the total group was 83+/-2%, and 3-year-overall survival was 92+/-2%. Patients < or=1.5 years had a better outcome than older children. Deletions/imbalances of chromosome 1p were found in 9/90 patients and were associated with a higher event rate but not with a higher death rate. Cytogenetic, flow cytometric, cytophotometric and morphometric analyses were performed on 22 previously untreated, primary solid breast carcinomas. Although the cell nuclei as the primary object of these studies were the same in all the tumors, distinct features were evaluated in each case to determine to what degree the results obtained by these techniques are comparable. From the cytogenetic viewpoint, six tumors had a modal number in the diploid range, seven were in the triploid range, and two in the tetraploid range; seven tumors had no modal number. Only recently, evidence was provided that apolipoprotein E allele epsilon 4 located on Chromosome 19 is associated with late onset (i.e. senile) sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Histologically, Alzheimer's disease is associated with intraneuronal neurofibrillary changes and extraneuronal A4/beta-amyloid deposition. We have previously identified a transcript at 11p15.5 which encodes a putative membrane transport protein, designated organic cation transporter-like 2 (ORCTL2), that shares homology with tetracycline resistance proteins and bacterial multidrug resistance proteins. Array CGH defined interstitial deletion on chromosome 14: a new case

Interstitial deletions of the long arm of chromosome 14 are relatively rare. We report a 8.5-year-old girl with dysmorphic facial features and mental retardation associated with a de novo interstitial deletion of chromosome 14. The comparison between our patient and all published patients is reviewed. The genetic investigations have allowed us to define the critical chromosomal region and to start an accurate follow-up.

Abstract Stage 4S neuroblastoma is a disease associated with spontaneous regression and good survival. We present a patient whose evolution has shown the variety and complexity of this disease in infants. Biologic factors, such as ploidy, MYCN copy number, loss of 1p36, and other chromosomal gains and losses were determined. A complex pattern of genetic abnormalities, such as near-diploidy, MYCN gain (2–4 copies per haploid genome) and imbalance/deletion of 1p36 was seen in the diagnostic sample. Despite many years of study into inversions, very little is known about their functional consequences, especially in humans. A common hypothesis is that the selective value of inversions stems in part from their effects on nearby genes, although evidence of this in natural populations is almost nonexistent. Here we present a global analysis of a new 415-kb polymorphic inversion that is among the longest ones found in humans and is the first with clear position effects.
