For more than twenty years, palaeontological excavations have been carried out at the Upper Triassic site of Krasiejów (south-west Poland), providing thousands of skeletal elements belonging to various tetrapod groups. However, almost all bones are preserved in a disarticulated state. This generates problems in taxonomic assignment among closely related groups, e.g., stereospondyl amphibians. As far as cranial elements, the pectoral girdle bones and the intercentra are very diagnostic, while all other remaining skeletal elements are difficult to unambiguously assign between either the capitosaurid Cyclotosaurus intermedius or the trematosaurid Metoposaurus krasiejowensis, both originating f…
Palaeohistology and palaeopathology of an Aeolosaurini (Sauropoda: Titanosauria) from Morro do Cambambe (Upper Cretaceous, Brazil)

A recent publication of fossil bones of titanosaurs assigned to Aeolosaurini from the Morro do Cambambe site (Mato Grosso state, Brazil, Upper Cretaceous) reported anomalous growth in some of them. Here, we present osteohistological sections of elements to understand not only the microstructure and growth of such bones, but also the nature of those anomalies. Among them, we selected one cervical and one mediumposterior dorsal rib, and a haemal arch. ABSTRACTOsteohistological characteristics of the large temnospondyl amphibian Metoposaurus diagnosticus from the Upper Triassic of Poland (Krasiejów locality) were determined using vertebral intercentra thin-sections from different regions and growth stages. The intercentra showed a trabecular structure in both the endochondral and periosteal domains. Endochondral ossification developed first, and the primary bone occurs near the periphery with a higher degree of remodelling in the centre. Periosteal bone deposition begins later; first on the ventral side, continuing laterally and finally onto the dorsal side.
