Eolian sedimentation in central European Auel dry maar from 60 to 13 ka

2021

AbstractThe climate in central Europe during the last 60 ka is characterized by rapid temperature and moisture changes and strong cold periods (Heinrich events). All these variations are preserved in sediments of marine and also some terrestrial archives. Here we present a continuous, terrestrial sediment record with almost all Greenland stadials and Heinrich events between 60 and 13 ka visible from carbonate roundness of the Eifel Laminated Sediment Archive Dust Stack-20 and CaCO3 data for central Europe. The carbonate roundness data show almost all stadials between 60 and 13 ka. CaCO3 data show a general transport system change with the beginning of Heinrich event 3. Since there are no ca…

Final Report of the Oceanographic Survey NextData201. Project NEXTDATA WP-1.5 : Paleoclimatic Data from Marine Sediments

2013

The retrieval of series of proxy data on the past climate will serve to acquire a deeper understanding of the climate system and a more accurate prediction of its future development, as a priority task for the scientific community. In particular, the analysis of climate data of the past is an essential tool for studying the dynamics of the earth's climatic system in conditions different from present ones, and irreplaceable for testing the validity of medium- and long-term forecasting models. The determination of the influence of anthropogenic impacts on the planet’s environment is predicated on a clear understanding of the natural ways in which the earth's climate responds to the complex se…

Oceanographic control on shell growth of Arctica islandica (Bivalvia) in surface waters of Northeast Iceland — Implications for paleoclimate reconstr…

2015

Absolutely dated, annually resolved sea surface temperature records from middle to higher latitudes covering long time intervals are crucial to better understand the climate system. Such data can potentially be obtained from variations in shell growth of long-lived bivalves such as Arctica islandica. This study presents the first statistically robust 178-yr long composite chronology (covering 1835–2012) based on sixteen live-collected and subfossil specimens of A. islandica from unpolluted, shallow waters of Northeast Iceland. Between 1875 and 1996, up to 43% of the variation in annual shell growth was explained by SST during February to September. Faster growth occurred when temperatures w…

A 5500-year oxygen isotope record of high arctic environmental change from southern Spitsbergen

2017

The oxygen isotope composition of chironomid head capsules in a sediment core spanning the past 5500 years from Lake Svartvatnet in southern Spitsbergen was used to reconstruct the oxygen isotope composition of lake water (δ18Olw) and local precipitation. The δ18Olw values display shifts from the baseline variability consistent with the timing of recognized historical climatic episodes, such as the Roman Warm Period, the Dark Ages Cold Period and the ‘Little Ice Age’. The highest values of the record, ca. 3‰ above modern δ18Olw values, occur at ca. 1900–1800 cal. yr BP. Three negative excursions increasing in intensity toward the present, at 3400–3200, 1250–1100, and 350–50 cal. yr BP, are…

Quantitative palaeotemperature estimates based on fossil chydorid ephippia: calibration and validation of a novel method for northern lakes

2015

To fully utilize palaeolimnological archives for tracking past environmental changes, methodological advances are necessary. We present a novel method to quantitatively reconstruct past summer air temperatures based on fossil chydorid (Cladocera: Chydoridae) ephippia assemblages. We examined a 76-lake training set from Finland for chydorid ephippia distribution to develop a transfer function for summer air temperatures. Subsequently, we tested its usability in downcore reconstructions by inferring Holocene temperatures from Lake Arapisto in southern Finland. Significant climate-related variation was found in the distribution and abundance of chydorid ephippia in the training set. A transfer…

Environmental and depositional controls on laminated freshwater carbonates: An example from the Roman aqueduct of Patara, Turkey

2013

Carbonate deposits in aqueducts are a new high-resolution data source for environmental changes during the time of the Roman Empire, notably in the fields of palaeoclimate and spring hydrology. In order to distinguish environmental effects from those related to depositional setting, laminated carbonate deposits were compared along the entire length of an ancient aqueduct channel at Patara, Turkey. The carbonate deposits, up to 80mm in thickness, are composed of lamina couplets up to 1mm thick of alternating porous microspar and dense, columnar sparite. The former formed in the dry, warm season and the latter in the wet, cool season. The presence of biofilms seems to play a role in the devel…

Benthic foraminifera as indicators of relative sea-level fluctuations: Paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstruction of a Holocene marine succe…

2017

This study presents the results of an integrated stratigraphic analysis conducted on a marine gravity core (MSK-12 C4) recovered from the outer continental shelf (82 mwater depth) of western Calabria, ~2.6 km, NE of Capo Vaticano (Eastern Tyrrhenian margin). The gravity core MSK-12 C4 recovered a stratigraphic succession of 4.18 m beneath the seafloor representing the last ~11.1 ka. Sedimentological analysis, micropaleontological quantitative analysis on benthic foraminiferal assemblages, tephrostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphic analysis of high resolution reflection seismic data recorded in the core site area and AMS 14C absolute age determinations allowed reconstructing the marine recor…

Le Quaternaire franc-comtois. Essai chronologique et paléoclimatique.

1982
