Cruise tourists on the mainland. Itineraries and interactions.

2017

This study is based on fieldwork conducted using participant observation – including both direct observation of/participation in the activities of informers by the researcher, several interviews, and the analysis of pictures and various material – accomplished aboard some cruises (in the Mediterranean Sea) and on the mainland (in some of the destinations). It takes into account the case of cruise passengers who decide to self-manage a destination visit. During fieldwork, I could study some particular forms of interaction taking place on two different levels: the forms of interaction established between passengers and destinations – focusing particularly on Palermo, Italy – and the system of…

Venti domande a Pasquale Culotta : un’intervista immaginaria

2010

In Culotta’s teaching, and also in his profession, the ancient city has always represented the architectural text par excellence, one of the most important tools for the education of the architect, from which to continuously draw materials to transform in his own interpretation of the project. This should also be true for the historic center of Palermo, despite the many issues you have presented to us. Do the unresolved aspects of the ancient city prevent us from finding more or less spontaneous seeds of renewal, even in these conditions of great hardship, or does it still represent a source of wealth, difficult to read but legible, for the architectural designer? In the Design Laboratory w…

The Mathematical Table of the Palazzina Cinese in Palermo. Animation and Virtual Reality Techniques for an Edutainment Project

2023

The Palazzina Cinese of Palermo was built on a project by Venanzio Marvuglia in 1799 on behalf of Ferdinand IV of Borbone, when the royal family, fleeing from Naples following the establishment of the Parthenopean Republic, moved to Sicily. The building, known as “Chinese” due to its style, is full of particular architectural and decorative solutions. An element of particular interest is theMathematical Table, designed to avoid any contact between the living room and the kitchen below, isolating it from smells and servants. Thanks to a complex system of winches and pulleys, in fact, the dishes could be served by letting the central portion of the table and small circular areas fall into the…

Cheese as a food souvenir in Sicily

2022

Souvenirs are elements of territorial communication, and they are examples of the marketing strategy of destinations. Souvenirs are objects that allow us to remember moments we have experienced and places we have visited. Drawing on the close relationships between places and souvenirs, this paper analyses cheese as a food souvenir in the island of Sicily. The method is based on a qualitative design which includes visits and interviews with local sellers in the food markets and food shops in Palermo, with the objective to reveal how cheese is protected and promoted as a symbol of Sicilian culture and heritage from a marketing perspective. Results of the paper show that cheeses made in Sicily…

The Romanesque period in Sicily coincided with Norman rule over the …

THE SAN VITO WOODEN PULPIT FROM MUSEO DIOCESANO OF PALERMO, ITALY: MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH AND ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR DATING AND RESTORATION

2017

The aim of the present research is to investigate the constitutive materials and the execution techniques of San Vito wooden pulpit from Museo Diocesano of Palermo (Italy) and to provide helpful information to dating it in addition to technical, historical and artistic evaluations. The pulpit, attributed to unknown artist, belongs to the decorative arts and the most relevant feature is its double dating, in addition to the singular painting technique: it has a linear structure typical of XIXth century and three polychrome and gilded panels probably dated to the end of XVIIth century. This paper describes the application of analytical techniques (imaging diagnostics techniques, Scanning Elec…
