Urban landscape evolution as a consequence of an invasive pest: The case of a small sicilian town

2017

The Red Palm Weevil (RPW), after its accidental introduction in Italy in 2005, determined a progressive disruption of Canary palms mostly in the central and southern regions. As it is difficult to undertake the management of this pest, the possibility of substituting the killed/symptomatic palms with other ornamental trees has been recently discussed. In this context, understanding the citizens' needs about green areas can improve the management of public parks and urban greening. Involving citizens on the natural resource management using public participation processes is crucial. The case study of a small town of Sicily (Italy) was treated and the spread of this pest was monitored. Moreov…

Behavior regulations and motives to participate in physical activity of Finnish team sports athletes

2014

The study examined the motivation to participate and behavior regulation in team sports among Finnish athletes. It explored differences across gender and among various team sport types. One hundred and seventy five girls and 142 boys (aged 12 to 24 years old) participated in the study. Motives to participate were measured on the Physical Activity and Leisure Motivation Scale (PALMS, Morris & Rogers, 2004), while behavior regulations were measured on the Behavior Regulation in Sport Questionnaire (BRSQ, Lonsdale, Hodge & Rose, 2008). Others' expectation was excluded from calculations due to low reliability. Participants scored higher on mastery, enjoyment and physical condition in PALMS scal…

NATURAL OCCURRENCE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF ENTOMOPATHOGENIC FUNGI ISOLATED FROM RED PALM WEEVIL IN SICILY (ITALY).

2008

Introduction: Originally from tropical Asia, the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier)) is the most dangerous and deadly pest of date, coconut, oil, sago and other palms. It has spread to Africa and Europe, reaching the Mediterranean in the 1980s, and was first recorded in Sicily (Italy) in 2005. Due to its recent introduction and the difficulty of its control, to known the natural pathogens of RPW in the introduced areas is very important. Methods: Pupae from infested palms Phoenix canariensis Hort. were collected. The entomopathogenic fungi were isolated and growth. Because of it is possible to growth only the 1% of the known fungi, the identification of entomopathogens is …

Genetic variability of Chamaerops humilis (Arecaceae) throughout its native range highlights two species movement pathways from its area of origin

2023

AbstractThe European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis, Arecaceae) is the only native palm in continental Europe, providing ecosystem services that are hard to obtain from other species. However, its populations are declining in some areas due to anthropogenic effects including climate change. Knowledge of genetic variability among natural populations is needed to establish conservation plans, to prevent genetic contamination of native stands by cultivated germplasm and to exploit it as an ornamental species. However, information on the genetic similarities among C. humilis populations is scarce. The aims of this work were to study genetic structure in C. humilis using a set of specifically desi…
